What's the right oil for my car?

One year and 5-6K should be fine, for stop and go with M1 extended, but if you want to be sure send some oil to be analyzed. Blackstone is the place I see recommended on oil forums.

Don't know if you saw, this, but what I concluded from this is that the early oil changes should not be extended due to the engine needing to break in.

How many miles were on the car when you had this test done? Was it the full 5600? We've already had are first oil change at just shy of 3000 miles.

I removed the factory fill at 1200 miles and replaced with M1 5W-30. The car has 6800 miles total when this was complete, 5600 on the new oil in 10.5 months. I don't drive much.

I am thinking about buying my oil on amazon (prime shipping yeaa!) and taking it to my dealer to avoid overcharge. Does anyone know how many quarters the v8 can take? They sell them in 6 packs and it will kind of suck if I need to buy 12.

I have changed the oil a few times myself. The stated manufacturer recommended refill on the V8 is 6.87 US qt. I have found that 6.5 quarts is exactly the right amount, assuming you are changing the filter as well.

Keep in mind you can always add more if you need to. Subtracting an overfill for someone without a proper garage is like trying to reverse a overcooked steak.

I suck at cars, so im going to have the dealer do the oil and filter change. I just want to provide my own oil, I guess i'll go with 12 and used the extras next time, oh well. Thanks for the information!

Out of curiosity, why would you provide your own oil?

Im still waiting for a quote from my dealership, but I figured that amazon would have better pricing than anything they could offer. I'm also not sure what brand or type of synthetic they will offer. They're kind of shitty for a hyundai dealership, and hyundai dealerships aren't great to begin with. So I figured anything I can do on my own is better than using them. I'd just go to a mom and pop but they didn't have the right fuel filter and I figured its easier to find the right oil than where to buy the right filter. But I could be wrong. :eek:

edit: I did mention I was car-retarded right, please keep that in mind. :D

Find out what they have first. Most dealerships carry Mobil 1. You could also buy the oil filter (10 bucks at most)and take it to a Jiffy Lube or equivalent, that might be easier. If you buy oil from Amazon just be careful who the seller is, there is a lot of counterfeiting that goes on on Amazon and Ebay. Also, although oil doesn't really go bad per say, the formulas change to keep up with manufacturers specs. Make sure it's an oil that is:
API Service SM,
ILSAC GF-4 or above

When you buy it from a place with high turnover like most autoparts stores and quick changes, you know what you are getting. The internet is a little more opaque. Just make sure the seller is reputable.

Any idea where I would even find the correct filter or model? Thanks again for the help.

Thought you guys might like this..

Mobil 1 5W30 Synthetic Oil (4-qts) is on sale for $21.99 - 20% off code DA20 = $17.59.

Edit: Looks like the code may have expired, but thats a pretty decent price for 8 quarts vs. amazon 6 quarts @ 48 dollars.

Double Edit: I used PS20 for 20% off $100 and just got 20 quarts for 95 with tax. The dealership quoted me 100 dollars!!!! They claimed it would take 8 quarts. So I told them I had it already and they said 18 for filter+labor. So I feel good.

I'll most likely do the next oil change myself with Mobil1.
As far as the filter, I think I read that different gaskets are used for V6 vs. V8.
Which ones of those 4 should I be using on a V8?

TIA.

The large one goes on the V8 oil filter housing, the metal one goes on the drain plug:
the two small ones, one I believe is for the V6 the other is for the oil filter drain plug on the V8, which you need a hex key to undue, I can't remember which, but it will be obvious to you when and if you remove the oil filter drain plug, although it's not entirely necessary to do this step.

This is probably a dumb question, but how long does oil like this last before "expiring"? (This question is specifically for synthetic, but it might be good to know the shelf life of conventional, too, just because.)

Would a two year-old bottle of motor oil work just fine?

EDIT: I ask because that deal you got -- $95 for 20 gal of Mobil1 -- is quite tempting, but I probably wouldn't get around to using it all for a couple of years and I don't want to waste any.

hmm.... maybe I could buy less oil and find something else to spend the remainder to $100 on....

Oil does not expire unless it is opened where it will gradually absorb water over time.You could hang on to that stuff for 20 years and it would still be as good as new.

This question has been asked a lot on certain oil forums. The response is that the oil doesn't go bad when stored in normal ambient conditions. The general consensus was that after 5 years the odds are more likely that the formula would be changed or upgraded to conform to engine specifications. Meaning using 5 year old oil in a brand new car probably isn't a good idea. The current Mobil 1 5W-30 meets or exceeds the following industry specifications:
ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5
API SM, SL,SJ,EC,CF,CD
ILSAC GF-4

There is already work on the next generation of motor oils. with the speed of engine advancement and focus on smaller displacements with direct injection, and turbo charging, lubrication technology is also changing.
But to answer your question more directly, don't worry about it. It's not gonna go bad like milk or bread.

TJ brings up a good point. I (personally) would not stock up over a years supply of motor oil. The probability is pretty great the the oil spec. will be improved before you are able to consume all the oil that you stored up. the oil that you store would be fine, but, if you are like me, yopu want to take advantage of the latest advances in motor oil chemistry.
As a former employee (now retired) of the largest manufacurer of moter oil additives, I can assure you that modern motor oils DO degrade over time. The complex chemicals in motor oil (detergents, dispersants, viscosity improvers & antiwear additives etc) are simi-stable compounds. Anti-oxidants are added to the oil to slow down the breakdown of these additives. In the presence of air (oxygen) or moisture, these chemicals can breakdown relatively fast (<2 years). If the container is sealed, most modern high performance 4 cycle oils are good for 5 years are more. I cannot say the same for high performance 2 cycle oils. I would never (regardless of the manufacturer) use any high performance 2 cycle oil more than 2 years old, especially if it's been opened and exposed to air/moisture. Of course, we don't really care about 2 cycle oils with our Tau or Lambda engines, but, I though I would throw that info out if you have an application for it.

A new consumer oil spec is already slated to be industry standard later this year. GF-5 is designed to address fuel efficiency along with focus on the ever changing engine designs. Technologies that were in exotic sports cars, are now becoming common place.
* Improve fuel economy
* Protect emission systems
* Protect engine turbo-chargers
* Reduce sludge build-up
* Improve piston cleanliness
* Provide better oil oxidation control
* Reduce engine friction
