  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

This might sound like a silly question but this is my first car with an electric parking brake. The manual says to shift the vehicle into P position and then apply the parking break before turning off the vehicle. With a manual emergency break you dont really pull it every single time you park so I am trying to wrap my head around this concept.
Thanks in advance 😬

You don't need to apply it. It works the same as a manual parking brake lever.

Advice: If you do apply the electronic parking brake, do so while having your foot on the brake pedal. This should alleviate pressure on the transmission, and therefore wear and tear.

Any driving instructor or car manual will tell you to engage the parking brake every time you park. Yes, many people do not but you are supposed to. It takes strain off the parking pawl, especially on a hill.
If you use Auto Hold, it will engage the parking brake for you when you stop and put the transmission in Park
Parking brake automatically locked
When the EPB is applied from Auto
Hold, a warning will sound and a
message will appear.

I've been driving for 44 years and have maybe set the parking brake 10 times. Those were times I was parked in a hill (I live in Texas).

EdP, what it's this parking pawl you speak of? I'll need to Google it.

Thanks Ed. That answers my other question. I kept wondering why the Parking Break would activate on its own sometimes but now I see it does it when I have Auto Hold activated.

Its the thing that comes out of place when your dog hits the shift lever while you pump gas. I just saw one on TV last night and the car coasted in reverse across the nearby road.

WHen you start up car and put in Drive does the parking brake automatically disengage? I've seen some newer cars that do and some that don't.

in my previous car i always engaged the parking brake before shifting into P, when i read the manual it gave the impression that i should shift into P then engage the parking brake , which is correct?

i usually do it like this : stop the car > shift into N (while holding the brake pedal) > engage parking brake > release the brake pedal > shift into P
it seems logical sense you engage the parking brake then release the brakes to put the load onto the parking break before shifting into P?

The best way to do it.

Exactly.

Exactly.
As long as you hold the foot brake then apply the parking brake the car will stay still and it does not matter if you shift to P before or after. Shifting to N first just adds another step.

^This.

Just go straight to park while pressing the brakes. Once in park, engage the e-brake...or not (it will do it automatically when you turn off the engine).

Really.. so the parking brake is auto engaged when in park? Is this across all Genesis models?

So, I should be able to go out into the garage and try to move the car slightly forward and back... and it won't move? On an older car, the movement is in the play of the gears... guess we can call it "parking pawl play" ...

Mine doesn’t do this...unless it’s engaged the parking brake but not showing the icon in the gauge cluster? I can usually feel a difference when I’ve turned it on so I’m a little confused

For your safety, the Auto Hold
automatically switches to EPB
when:
- The driver's seat belt is unbuckled
and the driver's door is
opened
- The engine hood is opened with
the shift lever in D (Drive)
- The trunk is opened with the
shift lever in R (Reverse)
- The vehicle is in a standstill for
more than 10 minutes
- The vehicle is standing on a steep
slope
- The vehicle moved several times
(Continued)
(Continued)
In these cases, the Parking Brake
Warning Light comes on, the
AUTO HOLD indicator changes
from green to white, and warning
sounds and a message will appear
to inform you that EPB has been
automatically engaged. Before
driving again, depress the brake
pedal, check the surrounding area
near your vehicle and release the
parking brake manually with the
EPB switch.
