after 9 years of ownership i was looking to replace my ~10 year old G37S 6MT sedan due to uncertain maintenance costs. the G37 had been very solid for the most part and i had modded it to exactly how i wanted it set up, but i had extensive work done under warranty which had elapsed 4 years prior (it had a 6 year powertrain warranty). the car had <90k kms (~55k miles) on it, so i may have gone another 2 or 3 years (or more) without doing anything major, but i was at a point where a change would have been nice anyways. i still miss that old 3.7 VQ snarl, puts the G70's 2.0T to shame and would shame the 3.3T as well. it was a japanese muscle sedan, quite raw.
my primary criteria: 6MT, 4 doors, LSD, RWD or AWD, vented front seats. i am not a big techie guy nor do i need much luxury...except vented seats. i had tried a bunch of S4's, 340i's, and even some 240i's, but i was hesitant to get into a 2-3 year old german car. and the various dealership d-bags really annoyed me. my limited range of options was becoming a big issue. german 6MT sedans had been killed off, and i wasn't getting into an M3. the 2.0T 6MT Accord was a no go even though that is a sweet engine. i couldn't compromise that much from my core criteria.
i knew nothing about Genesis - other than it was a new offshoot of HMA - aside from my bro-in-law who had a '13 Gen coupe 2.0T 6MT. i've never owned anything but japanese cars after my very first car which was a VW. and a nightmare. i saw an ad on Monday Night Football (i think) and liked the looks of the G70. then i found out a 6MT trim was available. then i saw it at my local autoshow. at this point Genesis Canada offered promotions if people put a refundable deposit down (spring 2018). so i went ahead and ordered my spec and had great interactions with the GXM.
between my deposit and delivery notice in September '18, Genesis held a VIP autocross track day event. tons of fun, and helped to hook people for sure. showed an investment to make the Genesis experience viable and to build trust in the brand...which is still a work in progress even up in Canada.
my rule of thumb had been to never buy a new vehicle, let alone a first model year car. ~1-2 year old established models were my sweet spot. so yeah, i took a leap of faith with the G70. luckily it has been a great car to date. service experience has been close to perfect, and the car still gets plenty of looks. i don't really care that the backseat is tight, as is the trunk. i like the proportions of the car as is.
a few disappointments were:
- no demo 6MT units - i test drove my own car - even though i had been promised a demo unit
- rear seat HVAC vents were a late delete even though spec sheets showed them
- CAD did not get front vented seats. very annoying, but we won in some many other trim specs compared to US spec that i have to drop that issue
- gauge cluster and dash info screen are too Hyundai-esque
- 2.0T performance is satisfactory but not much more. i have been continually perplexed with the sub-par test data compared to the 2.0T competition. i highly doubt the upcoming 2.5T will retain the 6MT. if it does i might consider it, unless Genesis does go with that hideous split-headlight front end
