Why I bought a G70

after 9 years of ownership i was looking to replace my ~10 year old G37S 6MT sedan due to uncertain maintenance costs. the G37 had been very solid for the most part and i had modded it to exactly how i wanted it set up, but i had extensive work done under warranty which had elapsed 4 years prior (it had a 6 year powertrain warranty). the car had <90k kms (~55k miles) on it, so i may have gone another 2 or 3 years (or more) without doing anything major, but i was at a point where a change would have been nice anyways. i still miss that old 3.7 VQ snarl, puts the G70's 2.0T to shame and would shame the 3.3T as well. it was a japanese muscle sedan, quite raw.

my primary criteria: 6MT, 4 doors, LSD, RWD or AWD, vented front seats. i am not a big techie guy nor do i need much luxury...except vented seats. i had tried a bunch of S4's, 340i's, and even some 240i's, but i was hesitant to get into a 2-3 year old german car. and the various dealership d-bags really annoyed me. my limited range of options was becoming a big issue. german 6MT sedans had been killed off, and i wasn't getting into an M3. the 2.0T 6MT Accord was a no go even though that is a sweet engine. i couldn't compromise that much from my core criteria.

i knew nothing about Genesis - other than it was a new offshoot of HMA - aside from my bro-in-law who had a '13 Gen coupe 2.0T 6MT. i've never owned anything but japanese cars after my very first car which was a VW. and a nightmare. i saw an ad on Monday Night Football (i think) and liked the looks of the G70. then i found out a 6MT trim was available. then i saw it at my local autoshow. at this point Genesis Canada offered promotions if people put a refundable deposit down (spring 2018). so i went ahead and ordered my spec and had great interactions with the GXM.

between my deposit and delivery notice in September '18, Genesis held a VIP autocross track day event. tons of fun, and helped to hook people for sure. showed an investment to make the Genesis experience viable and to build trust in the brand...which is still a work in progress even up in Canada.

my rule of thumb had been to never buy a new vehicle, let alone a first model year car. ~1-2 year old established models were my sweet spot. so yeah, i took a leap of faith with the G70. luckily it has been a great car to date. service experience has been close to perfect, and the car still gets plenty of looks. i don't really care that the backseat is tight, as is the trunk. i like the proportions of the car as is.

a few disappointments were:
- no demo 6MT units - i test drove my own car - even though i had been promised a demo unit
- rear seat HVAC vents were a late delete even though spec sheets showed them
- CAD did not get front vented seats. very annoying, but we won in some many other trim specs compared to US spec that i have to drop that issue
- gauge cluster and dash info screen are too Hyundai-esque
- 2.0T performance is satisfactory but not much more. i have been continually perplexed with the sub-par test data compared to the 2.0T competition. i highly doubt the upcoming 2.5T will retain the 6MT. if it does i might consider it, unless Genesis does go with that hideous split-headlight front end

REPLACED mercedes benz for the G70 why i bought G70 features, warranty , killer deal couldnt pass up (hyundai circle plan), the way she looks in and out looks imo one of the more exotic looking sedans on the road plus the red diamond stitch 👌 and the fact that you dont see many around yet and i am very happy with my first Genesis that ive own for 8 years now.

When I sat in the A4 it seemed to me that the orientation of my body to the wheel and pedals was off to the side just a smidge. I tried to correct my seating and that made me less comfortable and the wheel and pedals cannot move sideways. It is likely an illusion, I know, but once seen cannot be unseen. I expect no one to have this experience but it was mine. Also A4 colors are boring. Also further safety equipment requires uplevel trim line purchase. It was not the cost, per se, but just the idea that it was required put me off.

S60 was my preferred choice going in as I came from a Volvo. The one I tried seemed small. If I tried the G70 first it may have seemed adequate but it was the other way around for me.
On such small matters are many cars sold.

I was set on AWD and more HP then my current car at the time. Not touching Audi with all the stories I've heard on line with reliability, and service visit costs along with a couple friends experience. Test drove a 2018 manual BMW 3 series with a twin scroll turbo and while it was a handsome car outside I was left unimpressed with the ride, acceleration, and interior. A good friend of mine had a 2017 C43 AMG then got the 2019. Both the BMW and C43 were way more expensive with less features. Last car I seriously considered was a Model 3 performance AWD which was a little more in monthly car payment but would be less per month if counting gas expense.

Long story short the G70 had great reviews, looked great inside and out, has that sweet moldable 3.3 twin turbo, and was far less expensive than the competition. I continue to really like this car and I'm already thinking about buying it out after lease end.

Admittedly weird and probably unpopular observation about the Audi A4: The steering wheel rim was deep (thick front to back), but not thick in the other direction. I felt like I needed Lego man hands to hold it correctly. Uncomfortable and annoying!

I prefer a relatively thin steering wheel rim, and I love the G70's rim. Maybe a little OCD on my part but, hey, what part of the car are you going to be touching the most over your years of ownership?

I had a 2009 G37S with 44K miles. Loved that car but some ass rear ended me and totaled it. I’m not sure the 3.3 would be shamed by a G37? In sport mode the 3.3 is nimble and quicker IMO than a G37. Throttle response of the G70 is more sensitive too. I had no issues with my G37S, but the G70 3.3 is a step above IMO. Now if I can go 7+ years with zero maintenance issues with Genesis, winner all the way around.

I also had a G37S manual two cars ago. It was a 5 sec tops. G70 3.3T stock blows it away. Newer Red Sport is probably a tick slower...like 0.1 slower to 60.

I agree. I think BMW and others have gone a bit overboard with the super thick steering wheels. I have big hands, but I still prefer the size of my G70 wheel to my old 335xi Sport wheel.

Wow, I'm surprised with all the former G37 owners. I had a coupe some years back.. not one issue with it. Most fun vehicle I've owned so far. I currently have an Audi A3 that I've been quite happy with but I'm getting a bit bored after 6 years with it. A fun little ride there. BTW, another totally trouble free experience.

It came down to an A4 or the G70. So, in our eyes: fun vs sophistication? I'm still not sure. I'm quite fortunate so the economic side wasn't much of an issue: MSRP, MPG, etc. I drove em both and the ride was great in both.. even by my wife's standards. That dash display was pulling me to Audi, but not enough. So I (we) went with fun. Here's hoping! Deposit is down, should see it by March.

G70 3.3T is on par with the S4...not A4.

With that said...G70 is almost $20k less loaded vs S4 loaded. Nuff said. G70 is 0.1 quicker if anyone cares.

Somewhat true, but I was looking at A4 and G70 2.0 But I did go with the 3.3. And the A4 does have most of the same features that the G70 has.

I had a g35 and I had a electrical nightmare car almost caught fire . smh .

agree!
imo the g70 is also more attractive like I said before its one of the more exotic looking sedans on the road it just stands out.

Having had (still do) a 99 audi A6 Avant and a 2006 Acura Rl, I decided it was time to have a fun car. I started off by checking out the Stinger 3.3 and decided it was fun but the lease rates at the time sucked and i had just heard about the G70 3.3 going to come out. So then I checked out a C450 AMG, of course used. Test drove it and found it to be lots of fun. Still waited for the G70's to be released in California. Didn't see any until June or July 2019. Test drove one and was actually blown away. I thought it handled a lot different than the Stinger, much more stable in Sport and braking seemed a lot better to me. Test drove a BMW M340. I was not allowed a proper test drive by the dealer ( the jerk could not answer one of my questions about the car, was a bullshitter, and actually I think he thought i just wanted to test drive a BMW but not serious about buying one) and was instantly turned off because of that. The Bmer was about 18K more feature for feature except that you could not get the ventilated seats. What thats ridiculous. C43 about the same increase over the G70. Also checked out an S4, RS3 but did not test drive. RS3 no doubt lots of fun too small for me, S4 as Beefer says is on par with the G70, however having been an Audi owner I spent to much time in the shop, to take a serious look at it. It is also about 16K more.

So I went with G70 3.3T Sport AWD for these reasons:

G70 IMHO best looking car of the 3.
G70 equal fun factor and maybe, in some regards a touch better.
G70 excellent interior and features equal to or better than the others.
G70 most unique by far of the 3. I still have not seen one in my area except my gorgeous car when I walk out to it LOL.
G70 Price blows away the competition. Not even close. To me its a no brainer. Then again I could care less about image OHHH he has a BMER.
G70 leased in early Sept. Still go WoW every time I drive it, My wife loves it as a passenger but I do tell her its her car too LOL
G70 best warranty, concierge service, maintenance. Will see about all of that but on paper it sounds good.

audis sedans minus like a s7 there body styles just dont do anything for me not really much thought in design imo.

I actually went from a BMW 535. When I bought that, I previously had 3 different 3 series and thought I needed/wanted a bigger and more luxurious car (2 kids, blah, blah, blah). Actually looked at the G80 at the time but the 535 was much better imo and worth the added price, plus for about $2500, the dealership flashed the car for more hp and tq which was great. Anyway, I ended up with the worst buyers remorse ever. Not for what I paid but because even though it had lots of power, it was boring to drive. Even with the adaptive suspension in sport it was too soft imo. And the car was way too big. I hated driving it. Then I got into a minor accident (someone slid into the front of the car on ice while I was stopped) which surprisingly wrote the car off. I thought I was going to just buy a new 335 and be done. But the latest F30 3 series was not getting good reviews and seemed too similar to the 5 series so I decided I was going to change manufacturers which was huge for me at the time because I loved the dealership I was using (including the service department).

I borrowed a Ford Fusion from work so I could take my time. Accident was in January and I wanted to shop in April/May when the roads were clear so I could make sure the new car would be fun to drive. I started with looking at the C43, S4 (I am German and love ze Germans) and then continued to look at everything in the class, Acura TSX, Lexus IS350, Infiniti G37, Cadillac ATS... and I think that was it. This was early 2017.

I don't remember exactly when it was, but I was having trouble committing to something new and then I noticed the Kia Stinger. Was really impressed with the looks and engine and decided to drive it. It immediately bumped all of the Japanese options as it was cheaper, had more features, looked better and was faster than all but the G37 redline (which it felt virtually identical to). Then while I was thinking about buying the Kia and if I could actually do that, Genesis showed off the G70. I liked the more subdued looks, and the interior (which was one of the Kia's negatives to me) and the smaller size I thought would solve the other issue I had with the Kia which was it's size (felt a bit too big like the 5 series) and handling (a little soft for me).

I decided to keep waiting since I was actually enjoying driving a free car and winter was starting again. Then when the G70 came out in April 2018 I drove it and was immediately impressed. I was now only considering it and the C43 and S4, and to be honest, saving about $20K and having free service for 100,000km plus having a more rare car, was enough to make me take a chance on driving a "Hyundai". So it took me over a year to decide on a car and I drove a Fusion around for that long! Talk about dedication to picking the right car! lol

Anyway, aside from some issues on the service side and some very minor complaints about the car I have zero regrets. So much so that I just took delivery of a 2020 G70 Sport 3.3T to replace the 2019 G70 Sport 3.3T that was written off. :)

^ i wasn't talking about acceleration between the VQ 3.7 and G70's 3.3T. no question the 3.3T is a stouter engine. my point was related to the 'snarl' which i meant as the exhaust sound/tone/volume.

Dang, your patience on acquisition is amazing. Glad that you're enjoying the ride(s.) In the end, I was torn between the A4 and G and went with emotion. Here's hoping it's the right call!

Understand and agree. Our G70 is a little tame in that dept but something that is forgivable due to all the pluses we get.
