  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Winter tire options

I'm going to be running the Altimax on my Sonata this winter. Last winter on a different car I ran the Firestone Winterforce which are great, but the Generals should be quieter and also have a better ride, but are higher rated on ice.

I have the Generals on my Genesis during the winter and like them very much, felt very stable and not much louder than the stock tires. I have them mounted on a separate set of 17" wheels I got from tirerack. I did not have any issues with traction during last winter in the northern Illinois/Chicago area.

kman which 17" wheels did you go with? I am looking at the exact same deal from TR and am pretty disappointed with the 4 wheels they have available for the Genesis. These Sport Edition ones are the only ones that mildly appeal to me.

I bought one of the cheaper ones that were offered at the time. They are not as good looking as the summer wheels (OEM), but they still look decent.

A little advice would be appreciated. A friend has offered me some Blizzaks, but the they are 235/55-18. I currently have 235/50-18 on my 2010 Genesis 4.6. Would I have any problems using the 235/55-18?

Rims and tires ordered last night. Wish I would have had them this morning in MN as the Dunflops are dangerous (good tread left too). I could barely get moving in 2nd and the front tires were just kind of skid steering their way through corners.

From the Rack
Rims - 17x7.5 Sport Edition SE-16 Silver
Tires - 225/55R-17 General Altimax Arctic
$1293 shipped

Got a call from a TR rep this morning while in my white knuckle commute. He wanted to make sure I was aware of the additional cost to have the TPMS sensors sycned with my Genesis. I politely told him that I had read other Genesis owners saying this was not needed and the Genesis would auto-sync with new TPMS sensors. He said their 'experts' said otherwise. He wished me the best of luck. I do appreciate the call and notice of a possibly more expensive mounting experience, so that's cool. My first order with them ever.

I'll give a review of the Generals once we get into the real stuff here in MN.

Ha! Lookiing forward to putting these same tires on my Sonata in about a month. Not sure your location, but when I left for work this morning at 6, the roads were barely just wet, and no issues with weather or traffic at all. Must have started after I got to work:)

SW metro Scott. We had .5" on the ground when I headed out at 7:30. It was nerve racking for my first snow/ice experience in the Genesis.

New shoes put on today. First impressions - a bit noiser than the Dunflops, slightly 'drifty' at 70+ and I think a smoother ride. Seemed to soak expansion joints and cracks up with less of a harsh jolt. We'll see how they settle in over the next 500-1K.

Here are my winter shoes for my R-Spec. From Tire Rack, 225/55/18 (-1 wheel size, -1 width) Blizzak WS70, TPMS, SE Wheels. TR called me as well, regarding TPMS reset when ordered. Told them to update their system, as my car didn't need to be reset after wheel change.

Now that I got them on, forecast calls for 60 degree weather. I went for full Snow/Ice traction with WS instead of LM Blizzaks, when it's 50 degrees out, feels like I'm driving with gel-pads for tires.

Never fails here in the Twin Cities. I waited what I thought was a reasonable time to install my winter tires, but here is, almost balmy.

I remember one early winter 20+ years ago, a friend's home in the Blaine area had a tornado tear off the roof and two days later, there was snow in the master bedroom.

Ouch! I'm in Blaine. I hope I'm not next! :p

I'm good waiting until we get a good snow before putting my shoes on. Predicting weather in MN is like predicting Lindsay Lohan's next breakdown.

Anyone know the best tire pressure for 225/55/17's? My winter wheels are an inch smaller than the V8's OEM's. LMK. I think I have it set at something like 33psi right now

Might want to try about 37 psi. That should be pretty darn near perfect for your winter rubber.

Several vehicle manufacturer's owner's manuals recommend operating winter tires several psi (typically 3-5) higher than their recommended pressures for summer and all-season tires. While none of them actually provide the reason why, there are several scenarios that would support the practice.

First and foremost is that winter tires feature more aggressive tread designs, softer tread compounds and are often molded with deeper beginning tread depths than summer or all-season tires. While the combination of these design elements allows winter tires to remain more pliable in sub-freezing temperatures to provide more traction in snow and on ice, it often results in tires that have somewhat reduced responsiveness to driver input. The 3-5 psi higher recommended inflation pressures increase tire stability and help offset the reduction in responsiveness.

Thanks Scott. I will pump them up to around 35. 37 is getting a little too close to the max PSI rating for my comfort.

Spartan: It is 35% all around. Some sort of ceramic or metallic tint. Bought the car with it on lol

Too many variables. You'd have to run 1000's of miles on your tires at a specific pressure to really know about your unique setup to understand wear pattern, performance and comfort. Otherwise, you'd have to be on the Hyundai design team to understand all the suspension weights and dynamics.

Do what works for you.

If it's questionable, stick with the factory-stamped pressures on the driver's door. It's better than nothing.
