  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Worst news EVER!!!

Sorry to hear, Crupp.. Good luck.. When do you expect to get the car back?

My sympathies, Crupp. That really bites, dude.
:(

So my day did not go as planned today. As some of you may know we have been getting ALOT of rain here in Atlanta, Ga. So I am heading back to the office in a very hard rain. I notice a puddle it doesn't appear to be deep so I proceed. Well, I didn't realize the water of the drain was clogged and very deep. The water splashed up on my car and the car stalled. Not a big deal I thought something got wet. I get out of the car and there is gas and oil streaming down the road. This can't be good. After Haz Mat and the fire department leave and I am at the dealership with the car I find out there is a much bigger problem! The intake sucked in the water and water went into the engine. Piston tries to push water = not good. Piston breaks goes through the bottom of the block, through the oil pan. ENGINE BLOWN, car needs a new engine. REALLY, I need a drink!!

Wow man, tough break with the car, just be glad that you are safe cuz the car can be fixed much easier then you or your family. With that said daaayyyyyuuuuummmmm i would be in tears, lol i love my Genny

Sorry to hear that !! I also live in Atlanta and had driven through the rain yesterday, but never went through a puddle. I guess I was simply lucky...
Sorry for your gennie again.

I have had this happen to 2 different friends during our Twxas cloudbusts, Both said "Wheee" and hit the dips at fairly high speed, only to blow their engines. One was an early Toyota van, the other a sedan. The sedan bent a rod, the Toyota broke a piston.

Well, you're not alone. I spoke with an insurance adjuster this morning and we got to talking about the rain. Apparently he just had a claim on a Maserati who's owner did the same thing as you - $35,000 for the new engine - or a Genesis Sedan 3.8 with PP!

I assume that the water was sucked in thru the air intake, is that so? The water had to be fairly deep to get into that system.
Good luck.
Bob, 4.6 rebadged satin pearl white.

We think it came in through the Air intake, based on the dripping wet air filter. The water was pretty deep (come to find out) but the puddle was pretty small, less than half a car length. I think the biggest problem was the car dipped to the passenger side (this is the side of the blocked storm drain) and that is where the air intake is. If the same think happened on the drivers side I don't think this would have happened.

The insurance adjuster is going out today. 2 days to get the engines, 4-5 days to put it in.

Wow, I'm impressed how fast they are able to get the engine:) A week from engine order to finished instal is not bad;) This was nice to read positive news from your situation.

I don't completly understand how the water got into the air intake. The air filter is very high up in the engine compartment, but also, the air intake is even higher, located above the radiator and a/c condenser. Granted, the plastic pipe may not be watertight from the opening of the air intake and the air filter, but still, everything is high. The way I see it, either you were going a good speed when you got into the water, and water splashed up(forward) into the air intake, or the car ended up much deepte in the water and it covered the air intake and air filter. Once that water gets past the air filter, goodbuy engine.

Once again, never drive through water that is deeper than the bottom of the wheel and then, only if you KNOW there is no potholes under the water.

True, the air intake is up high but water comming in through the front grill and come to find out there is a black plastic piece that sits in the engine bay over the two front wheel wells and that was popped off which means the water came in directly beside the air intake housing.

Final outcome: New engine (whole engine not just the bottom piece), New Brakes and rotors (pre-caution against potential rust?), change transmission fluid. Total cost 16k!!! Said they are shooting for next Friday (the 2nd) to have it done

16K!! Holy crap. Hopefully all works out well. I guess you can't complain that you are getting all new brakes into the deal. Thank God for insurance.

i am sure you car will be good as new, actually better becuase the engine will be less what ever mileage was on the old one!

that cost is actually better than i would have guessed. my wife ran my genny into the back of another car, mild damage in my mind, and it cost over $17k.

i am a little suprised by the brakes/rotors. are they going to do anything else with the brakes? brakes and rotors are meant to get wet. is there some worry that water actually made it into the system via the reservoir?

see if you can get some pics of the swap. would be interesting to see.

best wishes to ya!!:)

Not real sure why their re-doing the brakes. I'll inquire and see if I can get some pics. Engine did not show up on Friday, they are saying Tuesday (29th)

This may have come in handy the other day!

Sorry to hear about that.
I agree with some other guys here that never ever go thru unknown waters. A friend of mine did that during the same flooding of atlanta, and here's the news of it http://www.mdjonline.com/pages/full...f+6 &id=3686167-Kennesaw+man+saves+group+of+6

He drove into this little river over the road cause he saw a camery go by. Turns out that push button start cars are all electronic and his car stalled as soon as water hit the engine. His bmw was submerged and is totalled now.

What I learned, water does not work very well with electronics :) So keep Genny away from puddles.
