  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

YES your Genesis can SELF DRIVE!!!

Can anyone build me the harness and I’ll pay you for the parts/labor? Trying to make this easy and painless for myself!
If you go on discord and join comma there is a HKG sub forum. There are people who will build you one there or Comma announced they are will officially supporting HKG so they will be supplying the giraffes. No idea on the timeline for that but it will be much cleaner than what we have now.

Are there any plans on a new Eon unit? It's based on a pretty old phone that's starting to be hard to find so I'm afraid if I buy an Eon, I may not be able to buy another one if it fails a year or two down the line.
They just released the EON 2 which has a bunch of improvements but also had an internal panda so it will be a much cleaner install.

agreed. and a premade panda or whatever for those not technically inclined.
If you go on discord and join the comma ai forum there is a sub group for HKG. All the info is there or if you wait Comma is going to be building the giraffes for HKG shortly.

Ultimately, you're still in command of the vehicle. You still have to be alert to the situation around you like you normally would. You can take over at any point by taking the wheel and touching the pedals disengages the system. This is still a level 2 autonomous vehicle, it's basically the next level of cruise control.

It's not until level 3 autonomy or above that you have to rewrite laws because level 3 doesn't require you to watch the road. Level 4 would allow you to take a nap and level 5 no longer has human controls.

I'm looking at buying either a '16 Hyundai Genesis or an '18 Genesis G80.
  1. Stock (no Comma.AI), are both vehicles a Level 1 or Level 2 on the SAE self-driving autonomy scale?
  2. In other threads, people have said that the Stock (no Comma.AI) LKAS and SCC actually got worse in the '18 G80. Can anyone here confirm if that's true?
  3. With the Comma.AI system, Are there any differences in installation and usability with either '16 or '18?

1. Stock, it's a Level 1 car. It's not a hands off driving experience. SCC and LKAS are considered driver aids or safety features, not autonomous driving features.
2. Can't answer that for you.
3. I would go with a 2018. Main difference is the 38MPH lockout for LKAS, I believe the 2018 allowed LKAS to steer down to 0MPH. With the lockout in place 2015-2017 vehicles, Openpilot would not work below 38MPH. Mine constantly beeps at me to take over because my commute hovers around that speed so it would work when I'm going 40 but then shut off when I'm going 37. Makes for some dangerous situations if you're going around a bend and the system shuts off. I tend to not even use the system unless I'm on a highway. It is possible to bypass the lockout if you tap directly into the power steering motor. On most Hyundai cars, the connector is below the steering wheel but in the Genesis, it's under the car but you can tap into the CAN bus by the radiator. That means running a long harness out to the front of the car. I didn't want to do that yet until the weather got better. With the 2018, you don't have to worry about that. The system still uses the stock SCC though which honestly sucks because it brakes too much.

Level 1 It is not a self driver, Not designed to be.
I had a 2015 and now a 2018 and they perform equally.

I have no idea if Open Pilot improves how LKAS works but as it stands from the factory I'd not use it for self driving. Not accurate enough. If that is your intention, check that out first.

None of these systems beat an alert MK 1 eyeball and a pair of hands (or at least one hand) on the wheel. If you want more features, buy a Cadillac w/ Super Cruise (which only work on previously mapped routes) or a Tesla, which has many more sensors and still is far from foolproof.

If anyone's curious how it performs compared to factory LKAS, here's a quick video I made while I was tuning the values. I was trying to tune out the slight ping pong. Even with the slight ping pong, it's nowhere near as bad as the stock LKAS and keeps the car centered in the lanes and doesn't bounce off the lines. Takes curves with no problems. This was with version 6.4, newer version is even better with lane change capabilities and continues to improve. Furthest I've gone is from Vancouver to Seattle and it was rather uneventful. Just sat there watching the road.

I have had open pilot on my 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD for almost a year now and it is night and day between when I first installed it and now. I drove from St. Louis to Kansas City last weekend and I barely had to use any input during the drive. Openpilot isn't FSD and requires you to pay attention but I only had to manually steer 2 twice. The LCA works great and even checks the blind spot monitor before changing lanes. My wife likes to say it drives better than I do. Obviously you still need to check before you change lanes but this system really is good. I have more issues with the stock radar cruise control than I do with open pilot. Since Comma is now going to support HKG vehicles and start building the harnesses it will get even better.

Yeah, the worst is when the car in front is exiting the highway and all the sudden your car throws on the brakes. I usually keep my Genny at 2 bars on the SCC.

Is there a way to edit old posts? I need to remove the links and diagram posted early on as they are no longer applicable to the Comma2.

Still loving the self drive...or lane centering.

Reading through the comments I want to make clear this is FAR superior to the stock LKAS. NO, it is not truly self driving, it is lane centering. However, it will detect and follow the road/lane MUCH MUCH better than the stock LKAS and does an incredible job of keeping the car centered in the lane not bouncing from one side to the other like the stock system, the 2 are really not comparable at all.

I do 5+ hour drives with it frequently and I rarely correct it. Of course just like cruise control you must ALWAYS be prepared to take over and drive the car to avoid an accident. For instance the system does not detect debris in the road and try to steer around it. It ONLY tries to keep you in the center of what it thinks is the lane.

Still, it is less tiring to do a long drive and the safety benefit is that if you happen to be distracted by spilling coffee or whatever the system will in all likelihood keep you from running off the road.

Yes, this Open Pilot Comma2 stuff is a bit daunting with no "dummies" step-by-step guide on how to install. I'm hoping Comma's support of HKG will mean better documentation overall.

Ha, we all hope. I think once they build a harness it will be easy peasy.

Just a quick update I installed a wiring harness to allow OpenPilot to steer all the way down to 0. Previously it was limited, like the LKAS, to a minimum speed of 37mph. While I had to order the connectors from China....and access under the hood to the plug is limited it really isn't a hard job (it involves 2 wires and a resistor). If anyone wants info on it head over to Discord and ring me up, I'm there as 1984Jeeper. I can pass on the info I have as I wrote up a dummies guide to doing it.

OP is driving getting better and better with each update!!

I've been following your post and very much appreciate your continued sharing of your success.

Is there a standard email way to get a hold of you rather than 'Discord'? If so, please PM me (or I can do the same to you) - I'd like to know rough cost, time to connect/disconnect, etc.

thanks

inmanlanier You have mail ;)

and so do you (assuming I properly deciphered your code).

I'm going to be doing this mod as well. System does well above 60kph but I'd like it to work in the stop and go. If only the stock SCC wasn't so rough but that's being worked on as well.

This really says it all for the present!
