Name's Casey, Ohio dude, first time posting, pleasure to be here.

My concern at its core is: I'm a young though dedicated (brainwashed?) "domestic" buyer. Want to know if there are Genesis sedan owners who have made the switch from owning "domestic" cars to... welll... the Genesis!

I'm 23. My first car which I bought (full cash) was a very low mileage 1998 Crown Victoria LX, fully loaded in January of 2008. Basically a Town Car without the sunroof and POS airbag suspension. I had that car until summer of 2012 and I loved that car. I babied it and took exceptional care of it; honestly, I wish I had never sold it, though I do realize it was getting up there in miles (around 115k when I sold it) and change was needed. FYI, I do a good amount of driving for someone as young as me - average of 1000 miles per month.

In summer of 2012 I received my second (current) car, a 2000 Lincoln Continental. My grandmother (who with my grandpa bought the car new) gifted me the car after she gave up driving after hip surgery and moved in with my parents. The car is nice, but I ehh, I don't know what to say. At its heart it has the same 4.6L V8 as the Vic, but modified a good bit. Pushed out 275 HP over the Vic's 200 (220?) but the damn thing takes premium, gets the same gas mileage, and is based on the Taurus's platform (FWD). Definitely quicker than the Vic, but it feels like a Cadillac DTS or older STS (oversized, too heavy FWD car). Plus, while I got the car with even lower miles than when I bought the Vic, it's been a hassle. The fuel pump went out on it last month, the AIRBAG light has been on for the last year, and twice - get this - mysterious smoke has come out of the steering column while I was driving.

Needless to say, I graduated university last year, and just got hired on a new job that fits my career path. My parents (the people who pay for repair bills) have told me that I should look at a new car and that they'll help me out. I really wanted something "domestic" (I put domestic in quotations because I realize that's a tad pretentious and very often off-the-mark entirely - e.g. my Crown Vic that was built in Canada). My first look was at a Cadillac ATS. I was hyped about it before it was produced and really, it's the only Cadillac that caught my eye. I test drove one and it was simply too small. I'm 6'1, 250 lbs. about to enter police academy at the end of the year and I don't have a single "small" friend. All my friends are tall and either muscular or fat. I liked the ATS and knew it would be small, but there was no room for my friends with myself sitting comfortably and barely any as it was.

Second car I looked at was a 300. Not a bad car, but I've always had severe hesitations to Chrysler given their horrible reliability (firsthand experience as a non-owner) and I must say that the interior was god awful cheap looking. It was so horrendous looking. Honda Civic EXs literally look nicer inside. My other turn off was just how clunky it seemed. I love a big car, but the body/window size proportion seemed completely lopsided and I did not like it.

Finally, I checked out a Genesis and I really, really liked it. Much more pep to it than the 300 and base non-turbo i4 in the ATS, seemingly roomier, nicer inside than the 300, and a much better overall driving feel. I hate the "sport-mimic" shifter (or whatever it may be called, where you have to move the shifter up down left right and every other damn direction) but that's the only fault I can find in the car. That is, minus it being a Hyundai. I know, very cliche, but I'm the cliched American sedan lover. I love my big body American sedans and just the STYLE and sense of AMERICANA that they ooze. I mean hell, I spent a month in Cuba last year, a big part of which was just to oogle over all the old American big bodies still in use (most Cuban cars are Russian and satellite Ladas) though 9 out of 10 of those Yank Tanks were actually running on Hyundai diesels.

Anyway, I know it's a LONG post, but my question is; who else here as made the switch from a DEDICATED "domestic" buyer to a Genesis and how do you feel? Why did you make that switch? How do you view the Genesis community in terms of the "domestic" community you left (the owners)? Are there any "domestic" cars that are a close second or even eclipse the Genesis? As a "domestic" aficionado, did you even consider any other "imports?"

Thank you!

*** As you may have noticed, despite being a Ford person I did not look at any Fords/Lincolns. Biggest reason being is that I don't (think I) want a FWD car. My cousin did get a new Fusion and it's a very nice car (even at base), but its base engine is waaaaay too slow IMO. I know Lincoln offers some nicely beefed up Fords but I just can't justify it for another FWD badge engineered Lincoln.

Well first let me say welcome to the forum. I recently bought a 2013 Genny about a month ago. It is night shadow brown(Chocolate Brown), tan interior. Just a beautiful looking car to me. This is my first foreign vehicle and Hyundai I bought. And I always been for an American car. I traded in an 2006 Lincoln Town Car for this car. And I have to say that I'm happy with my purchase. But there isn't many full size car offerings without paying a heavy premium. Before I decided on the Genny.... I did quite of bit of cross shopping. Comparing it to the Cadillac XTS, Lincoln MKS, Chrysler 300, BMW 5 Series, MB E350, Etc.... and I kept coming back to the Genny. I have the V6 and it's nearing 350 HP and I get 30.5 MPG on the highway doing 75-80 mph on flat roads. Very roomy car it is and I'm 6' 2" tall and I weigh 345 lbs and I'm very very comfortable....

Welcome to the forum Lawjo1978... I too am making a switch to a Genesis. I am waiting for the new 2015 MY to be released soon before pulling the trigger.

I will be getting one just not sure if it will be the 2014 or 2015 MY based on how much the 2015 will be. I started with large sedan cars with a few sprinkled in through out my life time.

I want to get back to that RWD V8 feel car again. We test drove a Genesis back in 2012 and fell in love with it's power and comfortable ride. Unfortunately we couldn't make that deal happen.

I have been following the 2015 MY ever since the spy pictures came out and how much effort Hyundai has put into this new designed Genesis. Not sure if your also looking at the 2015 MY version, but we just seen it in person at the Fort Lauderdale car show and it was awesome in person.

Again, welcome to the forum and hope to see many posts from you in the future...

Welcome to the forum. I have owned both a Crown Victoria and a Grand Marquis. They were nice and roomy but just floated along the highway with very little handling.
I recently had a 2011 Fusion that I liked but was cramped in. I am 6'3" and 350. When I was researching a bigger car, I drove the 300, XTS, MKS and Taurus SHO. The genesis had far superior driver room and comfort.(at least for me) The pricing was comparable to the 300 and Taurus and as much power as either but I found the styling to be the best in my eyes. The warranty on the Genesis along with the emotional appeal of the looks won me over.
I have not regretted my decision to get it. If you do get one, I am sure you will love it and not regret it either.

Welcome!

Please note that my second car is a 2009 Ford Taurus. Given your age, size, and starter income, I recommend that car for you if you can find one with low mileage. There are already many newer FWD Tauruses in use nationwide as police interceptors. I happen to prefer the 2009 Taurus which had been called the Ford 500 until a name change in 2008. If you haven't driven one of these cars I think you will love it immediately. It has 263 hp and plenty of interior and trunk room (21 cu ft). I would avoid a new car until you're a bit more advanced in your career. That is just my personal financial advice to a new grad.

You and I are both the same age (23) but I have always been in love with my 2012 Genesis since I purchased it in 2011, it's roomy, fast and sexy. It's good to see more younger people considering the Genesis. I would say go for whatever you feel is best in regards to the driving, look and feel as everyone has different perspectives. I came from a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer, so this was a huge upgrade.

^+1 - You should buy the car you want and not buy something that will make you wished you got the car you really wanted.

The last domestic car I thought was as well turned out was my 1985 Ford T-bird Turbo Coupe. I would have that car again in a heartbeat BUT for modern comfort and performance, and considering the cost, I haven't found any domestic that can top my R-spec.

Domestic? No. IMO, the only thing really close to a Genny in style, quality, performance and (price, but less so) is a used Infiniti M...

Yes the 2000 Continental was front wheel drive. I have a 2002 and had a 97 Lincoln Mark VIII for years. Same engine, different front vs rear wheel driving experience. My wife drives a 2012 Lincoln MKS, also front wheel drive. Am also driving a 2000 Taursus and we had a 94 Marquis, so that about covers the Ford big car base over the last 30 yrs.

I personally prefer rear wheel drive cars. My wife's MKS might ride a little better on rough rodes than the 2011 4.6 Genesis that I got a few days ago, but highway driving which I do a lot of is fairly comparable. I hate the non-adjustable head rests in the MKS, and that would be reason enough to keep me from owning one. There is no comparison in handling and acceleration between the MKS (6 cyc non-"eco" boost) and the 4.6 Genesis. the Genesis is much faster (2 sec? 0-60, and handles better). I had considered the 2008ish Cadillac STS for a while, but the styling wasn't quite what I was interested in, but the OP might be. As much as I would have liked to buy a Lincoln Mark iX, sadly Ford decided not to follow that path, and none of their current cars do much for me.
good luck in your quest.
Maybe look for an old Mercury Maurader? They are getting kinda old to be reliable though..

I just purchased my genny a month ago. 2013 base model. for what it is and the price I paid for it, it was a bargin and I couldnt beat that. took the dealer down to 26,380$. im not a domestic car driver but i came from a honda accord and like I said for what it is, it is a great value so far. I dont know about long term quality... but i am satisfied with my purchase so far. also, I looked into the car sales of the genny in america and it does not fair too well in the market. this might be the best time to buy one right now if you are considering this vehicle... it is also projected that the 2015 model will be even worse.

Hyundai has suddenly began to advertise the heck out of the Genesis after a few years of never seeing them in commercials. That probably means they have some '13 or '14 models to sell and are willing to discount them much more than before.

Don't know where the OP is located. I'm in AZ.

Worse than what? Guess I don't quite understand:confused:

2013, they did not sell many cars. 2014 is around the same for sales. so, the projection of 2015 will get worse.http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2014/03/usa-all-cars-ranked-by-february-2014-ytd-usa-sales.html thats just the numbers for Feb.... they are down 38% from 2013 to 2014 in the month of Feb... you can search comparable vehicles such as the lexus es, and the chrysler 300 on that website and they pretty much beat the genny on sales, from the looks of things it isnt gonna get any better.

My guess is the reason the drop from 2013 in sales vs 2014 in sales is do to the fact everyone is pending the arrival of the 2015 model. I am one of those and plan to purchase a 2015 or 2014 depending on what pricing is on the 2015.

Whose 2015 projection?

Not that folks on here are bias or anything  but the Genny is a great ride! She is also the first Non Domestic car I have owned in my 38 years. From my first car a 1976 Thunderbardge(bird) to a 1998 Taurus I have been a blue oval man most of my life. Loved most of them but the electrical problems on my 84 Elan T-Bird was CRAZY and her winter road handling was how you say non existent.

The Genny has not disappointed me one bit; ( used 2010 4.6 Blk/Blk Tech) the Hyundai Dealers on the other hand leave much to be desired; but that is for another post.

My reasoning for going with the Genny was she has a V8 something that Ford has seemed to abandoned in a sedan, plus she was a lot of car for the money (options and trim). Best bang for my buck you could say.

As for other cars I looked at I gave the G8 and GTO a look but with the death of Pontiac that scared me away as service and parts might have been a problem plus I never really liked the trim or style of the interior in the Pontiac's. Could not get past the boxy look of the 300 or the big boat floating ride of the Charger so passed on Chrysler. Fords Fusion was a 4 banger no matter what trim you went with so that was a big pass. The Genny has good looks the power to get up and go and a extended warranty that makes her very attractive. So much so I bought one and love driving her every day!

The Genesis does not compete head to head w/ the ES (that's the Kia Cadenza).

Hyundai's sales goal (pre-Great Recession) for the Genesis sedan was 20k annually (the 30k sales goal for the coupe was totally misguided) and they hit more than that (nearly 23k) in 2012, with 2013 likely being close to it -which is darn good for a model that was into its 6th year of sale.

For instance, the previous Lexus GS in its 5th/6th year of sale only sold about 7k (and the GS is equipped w/ AWD) and in its last year sold only 3.7k.

The current GS in only its 2nd yr of sale couldn't break 20k last year.

Things are worse for the Infiniti M - last yr (its 4 yr in its current model cycle), it managed to sell a little over 5k.

Hyundai probably loaded up on supply of the 1G Genesis as production shifted to the 2G Genesis.

Pretty much what's on the dealer lots (and maybe what is left at port) is what's left of the Genesis until the 2G model starts hitting the lots.
