If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

EPA finds Hyundai, Kia overstated gas mileage

Class-action lawyers would find a way to get fees out if this one no matter what Hyundai did. Even if the MPG was corrected UP, some lawyer would find a small group of victims (people who never bought a Hyundai, but would have if they'd know it got better mileage). I've seen this madness too often with bogus, ambulance-chasing shareholder lawsuits.

I get 19-20 mpg in town in my 2009 4.6 on my sticky pilot super sports. My father gets 14-15 in the same town in his 2012 4.6 on the stock michelins with lower rolling resistance. OMG I need a layer. Quick, what's the number for 1-800-ASK-GARY!?!

Or not... reasons: 1) my foot has less lead in it, and 2) I have a few stretches of road I can set the cruise at 45 mph, the sweet spot for the 6-speed's 6th gear.

Bottom line: YMMV

You know what, just the simple fact that you can burn regular 87 octane gas with 10% corn squeezing’s in a 290HP, 333HP or a 429HP engine and not have any engine knock or run on when you drive this car, not sacrificing any performance is well worth the couple of miles difference in the stated EPA MPG and actual MPG IMPO.

I regularly achieve and sometime exceed the stated MPG on my Genesis under all driving conditions.

I’ve had cars that no matter what octane you put in the tank under heavy load you would get engine knock and some of them would run on so bad that you felt you would have to shoot the sucker with a 50 Cal to get them to stop after you turned off the ignition.

Look at the prices of the 93 plus 10% ethanol fuels the next time you pull in for a full up and that 1 to 3 MPG difference won’t look so bad.

and you care why? Worrying about others motivations can keep you eternally busy. Judging others to your standards is an equally futile thing. I can say for certain you will not change anyones opinions nor will yours be changed. simply put a fork in it this thread is done

I was basically making a statement/point.

But you are right, I can't change the world. I aparently grew up too long ago in the "honest work" generation. You know, the one where you give an honest days work for an honest days pay. You don't get more than what you work for, etc. I guess I was taught differently than you.

I learned at an early age, 15, what it was like to work for what you have and be proud of your work. I'm not rich or do I have a lot of money. But I work hard for what I have and don't expect, or ask, for a handout from anyone.

I'm not part of the "give me" generation that is growing up now. Always wanting something for nothing.

You are not too bright, you assume I am of a different generation with different values which you find inferior. However you are wrong. I believe someone or a company that does wrong should be punished, which is what the gov. is doing to KIA/Hyundai. This is not about handouts this is consumer protection. All your many posts are simply assuming that people are trying to screw the Korean automakers, you see the individuals as bad people, however it is the car company that is at fault.

Apparently you are still not understanding my point.

1. Hyundai/Kia made some miss caluclations in their EPA ESTIMATE due to a NEW FORMULA..
2. Less than 1 % complained.
3. EPA spent OUR TAX DOLLARS investagating.
4. Hyundai agreed they made a mistake and are willing to pay a stipens to Hyundai owners.
5. A lot of Hyundai owners are jumping on the band wagon and wanting money from Hyundai. Which if nothing was ever said, they would have never know about it or complained about it. i.e., something for nothing.

There's very little in this whole scenario that shows that Hyundai deliberlity tried to misrepresent their product or the EPA ESTIMATE.

At the worst, I'd say buy back the cars from those who honstley complained. And adjust the EPA ESTIMATES using the new formulas.

What YOU SIR are trying to get me to beleive is that if the EPA ESTIMATE on YOUR vechicle was 1 or 2 MPG less than what was on the sticker, you would not have bought it. IF that is the case, then maybe you should have bought a completely different vechicle. There are a lot more out there with better EPA ESTIMATES than the Genesis. ;)

But according to you, any little mistake is appperently FALSE ADVERTISING.

packerfan31 "I did the hyundai reimbursement calculator for my 2012 4.6 13,500 miles = $141 which I assume is based on average alabama gas prices. Like many have said gas mileage was not really a factor in the purchase decision. However false advertising cannot be tolerated. While a 1mpg error may seem trivial, is 2 trivial, then 3.. where does it stop? Also if they will fudge that what else are the fudging...? "

I received a letter this weekend from HMA CEO explaning what happened and that I would receive the debit card if I signed up.

I'm going to send him a reply thanking him for his honesty and that I understand it was a simple calculation mistake. Also that I did not buy my Genesis R Spec based on the EPA estimate so I will be declining the debit card. ;)

When I took the car in for the 7,500 service, the rep there told me that "they verified my mileage" and they included information on the debit card in my documentation, and that I should definitely follow up.

I told her my R Spec would probably yield a debit card total of $4.25 over the life of the car and she insisted I should take advantage of the offer. Thought that was pretty cool, even though I have yet to look at the information she gave me.

I'm getting ready to take mine in for a 15K oil change. I'll be sure and let them know NOT to sign me up then.

I'm getting better than the EPA estimate. ;)

Got my $199.90 gas card today...and I attaint the posted MPG as well! Win win!

Got my letter today, went to the web-site and "signed up."

$210.29 for my 2012 purchsed in Sept 2011.

Plus it's for the like of the car!

:D

Don't do that... I just signed up and I've got $100 bucks coming to me for only 9 months of ownership. Assuming similar driving, that's about $130 bucks a year for my R Spec!

Money is money.

To me, that's like following behind a guy and watching him drop a 20 and then picking it up and putting it in my pocket instead of returning it.

I didn't complain to the EPA about the estimate. I'm getting better than the EPA estimate. They made a simple mistake in their calculations by using an old formula. So why should I punish them and take their money?

I'm sure all of the new Hyundai customers will be glad to know that you guys are the reason for a cost increase. Just saying.

To each his own I guess.

To add some perspective to all this, both Hyundai and Kia's sales are still going up, according to their latest November sales figures. The EPA fuel consumption overstatement hit the newswire on Nov. 2nd, early enough to tank sales if it was going to happen. So, as hard as the mainstream news media demonized H/K, buyers knew they wanted overall value and quality, and they weren't going to be led around like sheep.

We all know the two companies stepped up voluntarily with their repayment program, and frankly, that should be enough and the end of it.

Some people might throw some "cultural" stuff into the mix -- "they all lie", etc. Have fun with that, but my experiences have been different where with Korean and certain other Asian companies of this scale and stature, honor, name reputation and integrity are core values, and regarded above short-term prosperity.

This thread is old and tired already.

My car is a 10' so this doesn't effect me but I have a footnote. The MPG on the computer is not accurate. Mine has been consistently high by 1.5 MPG when compared to manual calculation. Mileage/Gallons. 27.2 on computer and 25.7 manually on last tank. 75% highway and 25% city.

I haven't heard one single word about the "cultural stuff" you mentioned. But I am getting sick about hearing how Crusty is refusing to accept payment. I am going to need a barf bag if he keeps telling us.
