If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hi Genesis Nation
I am going to pick up my Genesis from the dealer in about 6 hours. (happy happy!) One week ago, I set out to buy a Lexus or Infinity, and after happening upon the Genesis during my Lexus research, I fell head over heels with the car, and switched directions. I started out by looking for an almost new one, thinking I could better afford to buy the tech package if it weren't new.

Yesterday, I found a 2012 V6 tech with 18k miles for $28K. This car has been on the road since Dec 2011 (so 1.5 years), as a service loaner for my nearest Hyundai dealer. When I went in to drive it yesterday, it drove beautifully and was like new except for a small paint scratch on the lowest lip of the front bumper, almost out of sight, and one in the back right below the trunk, very much in sight.

I decided to also drive a new 2013 V6 tech, just for grins. The two cars were almost identical, except for the cosmetic scratches & extra mileage.

I didn't think a new 2013 with tech was feasible, but when I told them my max payment, they got the price down to a range that made it affordable, albeit just barely.

When all was said and done, the 2013, originally $44K MSRP, will be $38K, which I thought was a great price for the tech package. (Gotta have those ventilated seats!)

They gave me $2500 off in programs and another $1500 off to get it down into my max range. Not bad, I thought.

Here's my question for the Genesis nation: would you recommend buying the new 2013 V6 tech for $38K or the used 2012 V6 tech for $28K?

(OR, should I check myself on wanting the ventilated seats, and just go for the V6 premium, foregoing the tech package)? My guess is a new 2013 V6 premium package would be ~$34K).

Would value your opinions, since I know this forum has depth of Genesis knowledge, and I am just one week into loving this car, so not yet clear on all the nuances.

Thank you!!

Addendum: we ended up bringing home a new 2013 V6 tech. Still wondering if it was the right decision since it would have been nice to save $10K, but at the end of the day, that new car smell was a siren song that tipped the scales.

That's a hard ? -- Only YOU know the real answer,
Used - Less depreciation when driving off the Lot..
New - A completely fantastic feeling that only You know if you can Afford!
Do a Google search on the Dealership & see what their AfterSales service is like...With the Used vehicle ask for a Service before taking Delivery..
In any event the "G" is a fantastic piece of motoring machinery..:)

I have a 2012 V6 with both tech and premium...I hate cars that have some switches blocked out because of the lack of an upgrade. It's great to have all the gadgets. Why not if you can afford it and if not give up something else! Like Starbucks.

Save yourself the $10K and go used. In a year or two, the new one will probably have a few scratches anyway.

In the long run, the difference between the "then value" of the 2012 and the 2013 will be next to nothing as there are very few changes, so if you can save $10k going used up front, I'd do it....as a matter of fact, I just did.

Last weekend I picked up a 2012 V6 Tech for $27k with under 3k miles. Not a CPO so no 10/100, but with the Tech pkg you will need the HPP extended service plan anyway IMHO. That will be another approx. $1,500, but be sure to buy before 25k miles to save a bit of $.

Take the time to search, but as someone who just did for 4+ months, just know that there are not many premium or technology package pre-owned 2012 cars out there. Most of what you see are former rentals and they are virtually all base models. At the right price, a former rental base model can be good as well. I found about $22.5k for a non-cpo and $23.5k for a cpo was about the best I could do.

Good luck.

is the $38k for the 2013 including tax and license?
just as a reference, my 2011 V8 was $35k before tax and license when i bought it new.

Thank you for the recommendations, and the quick replies. I'm very grateful!

Looks like its roughly a 50/50 split on used vs new.

The only other tidbit of info is that the new 2013 is the color I love love love (Titanium) and the used 2012 is the color I like like like (Platinum). Neither have the seat color I was hoping to find (Camel), and both have the one I originally said I would never ever ever buy (Black). Love makes the heart a little crazy sometimes.

I'm in Northern California, and apparently 2012s are hard to come by here, although it sounds like that might be the case everywhere.

Follow up Q: Do I care that if the used 2012 vehicle was a service loaner, as possibly its been driven more carelessly than the averaged used car? Or is that a non-issue?

Thank you again...very grateful for the guidance & expertise sharing.

yep, I bet I'll have a few scratches soon enough. i was thinking the same thing.

the $38K is before tax and license. Sounds like you got a much better deal! I'm in Northern California, San Francisco area. Wonder if its higher cost here...? In any event, I probably didn't negotiate as well as I had hoped! The price I ended up with was about the same as the "Costco" auto program, so I probably just ended up at the high range of the wiggle room. :\ Again, the crazy things we do for love. If I was smart I'd get the used one. I just can't let go of the idea of getting the exact color I wanted, Titanium.

good to hear that the extended service plan is important. Good call and thanks for the tip. I always thought extended warranties were bogus, but with all the crazy gadgetry, it does seem like a lot could potentially go wrong, and if so it would be at a very high cost.

yep, I will be foregoing Starbucks for a long while. And Nordstrom shopping sprees. And maybe even a few less trips to the grocery store. Afterall, who has time to eat when you're driving a glorious 8 speed?

I'm not the expert that some of the folks are here, but everything I have read is that if you get the Tech Pkg (all the toys), you will want to get the HPP extended warranty. But be sure to shop around for this as all dealers price them differently. Jim Ellis (just down the street from me) apparently has one of the best deals in the country on this.

Be sure to get the one that is "backed" by Hyundai and remember that 5/60 b to b is not really b to b. Much of the electronics are only covered 3/36. This is why you need the HPP IMHO.

Good luck.

I so agree about the fantastic part. As someone who's never driven a lux car in my life, I had NO idea driving a car could be so thrilling.

My better half said he'd never buy a Korean car, and he rolled his eyes every time I mentioned Genesis. This weekend, he and our friends were giving me the hardest time for changing my mind from Lexus.

Then he drove the Genesis for the first time yesterday, and he now wants to trade in his Ford truck for a Santa Fe! (Pretty shocking for a union man). It was HIS idea to consider upgrading from the used Genesis to a new one. Suffice to say he is a full convert.

okay, well...here it goes! I'm leaving now to go buy one or the other. Thanks again for all the great points of view. Can't wait to change my status from "in my dreams" to "proud owner" :}

What all isn't covered by the 5/60? Audio and what else?

According to the warranty book the following are only covered 3/36:

Radio
Tape deck
Cd/DVD player
Navigation
Bluetooth

With all of the issues the tech cars seem to have with the audio system, one head unit replacement would cost more than the HPP service plan.

Whats a decent price for the HPP Platinum?

Last month I received a couple of quotes from Scott Johnson at Jim Ellis Hyundai here in Atlanta. These quotes were for a 2011 4.6 with 21k I almost pulled the trigger on.

This is for HPP Platinum coverage (as close to b to b as they offer - according to Scott it covers all electronics that were factory installed):

6yr/75,000..$1484 with a 0 deductible

6yr/60,000..$1450 with a 0 deductible (not sure who would buy this one)

It is my understanding that these years and miles start from when you purchased the wty, not the car. I believe there is a little better price available if you purchase before you hit 10k miles, and conversely there is a higher price if you have over 25k miles. Also, there is some savings available if you raise deductible to $100 per visit.

Also called Del Ray Hyundai - these are based on my current car (2012 v6 Tech with 3k miles). Not sure how to compare these, but I figured I'd put it out there as well. They offer the HPP Platinum coverage at 7/100 with 0 deductible for $1700 and 10/100 for $1900. By increasing the deductible to $100, the price drops by $240.

The extended warranties are from the original in-service date (this can usually be found on the carfax), not from when the warranty was sold. FYI

And be aware that the in-service date is not necessarily the date you bought the car. If it was a loaner or executive demo etc. it could have an in-service date earlier than your purchase date even if the car was sold as new.
