If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

My oil consumption test will be done next Tuesday (3k miles). So far at 2k miles its only used 1/2 qt. I think the thicker oil (viscosity) of the 5w-30 they used has helped it burn less oil. Hyundai dealer says Hyundai said its not an issue unless it burns more then 1 qt. per 1k miles. So they are not worried about it so I guess I wont be. I'll just have to check it more then I used to. I'm going to go back to the 5w-20 for my next oil change (winters coming up) and see if it starts burning more again. If so, then I'll try the 5w-30 again and see if it burns less again. Over all I think it just likes the thicker oil. Next summer I think I'll try 10w-30 (hot here in Texas) and see how the consumption is.

????????????

A 5w-30 oil and a 5w-20 oil are both 5w oils at cold temps--------why change??

Because the oil consumption occurs at high temps.

Read carefully. I was responding to a post about going TO 5w-20 from 5w-30 because of colder weather.

OK, I see that now. However, a 5W-20 oil is likely to be a little thinner viscosity at cold temps than a 5W-30, since viscosity categories are approximate and not absolute numbers. But the difference is small and if my car was consuming oil between scheduled changes, there is no way I would stop using 5W-30, especially since OP lives in TX.

I was going to go back to the 5w-20 just one more time to see if it burned more again. The Service Manager seems to think I'm making it up that my car uses oil. Not his fault though because it is burning less. The first 25K miles on my car I would have to add 2.5 qts. of oil after about 4k miles of driving. When we did the test at Hyundai they used 5w-30. I just want to try the test my way with the 5w-20 and see if it burns a lot again. After my test I plan to just run the 5w-30 in it for the rest of the time I have it. Really just a sanity check.
I agreed with the checks Hyundai did as the Manager had me come back to the shop and we checked it together.

If the manual allows the use of 5W-20, I would DEMAND an oil consumption test with this oil. Just because it doesn't consume oil with 5W-30 right now, doesn't mean it might not start up, dare I say, with 101,000 miles on the odometer. Right when you're hosed with no warranty.

Unfortunately using the heavier oil has not helped. I'm beginning to develop a pessimistic attitude towards this the future of this car. I don't think the fix is going to be a heavier oil.

Please check your inside door sticker and let me know what the manufacture date of your car. Mines is 2/29/12.

Thanks!

Guess what? Let it consume away as much as possible using what they recommend in the manual. And you keep working the dealer and the Hyundai CRM system used to every dealer visit, and you have a history. Plus certain states have lemon laws. In the end, as you have seen here in this forum, they will stand by their product and put in a brand new engine. And you get a loaner while they do it. I bet the new engine will have by now any design issues resolved.

Mine was built 9/11 as a 12. With M1, 5-20, one quart per about 800-1200 miles. With Pennzoil Ultra 5-20 not a drop in 4k. Same for Kendall 5-20 full synthetic.

Also, I still have no accurate answer on the oil filters. I posted pictures of the inside of the oil filter can in another post, along with the paper topped filter (supposed new OEM for 12-14 5.0), and the plastic rubber flanged version. It sure looks like the inside of the filter can, the flanged version is the right fit. It also fits snug and like it "connects".

I just began to get information on the lemon laws in my state. I have all of the documentation and am going to start the process. In the meantime, I will let them do what ever testing they want to do.
I'm just not comfortable with keeping the car if they have to replace the engine.
How do you all feel about that?

As far as the manufacturing dates go...I was hoping we were all a little closer with our build dates but there seems to be a wide range.

I would not worry about them dropping in a new engine. And keeping that car. But, that is me.

I've posted a few times about my Genesis '12 and this is a follow-up. I have done all the consumption tests and now working directly with Hyundai and the service manager at my dealer. The last test is one everyone has talked about, now running 5W-30 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. They told me to run 2500 miles, don't check just bring back. I'm at about 1800 now and almost a full quart low. I expect I will be 1.2-1.5 by 2500 miles. The dealer told me Hyundai says 1.5 quarts per 6000 miles is acceptable, but I have never had a car burn any where near that amount, even after 150K miles. I noticed questions being asked about manufacturer date, mine is 6-2011, I bought in 9-2011.
I will post again after I complete the test and take my car back to the dealer. Hope Hyundai stands by their product.

With 5/30 Syn?

The dealer said it was 5w-30 conventional oil today. I thought at first it was synthetic, but it wasn't. In about 1,000 more miles I'll do an oil change and go back to the synthetic I was using. They topped it off after the test was completed this morning.

Mine is much better on 5/30 Syn. Checked at 1500 miles and it was on the full line.

Thanks.

I have read the entire thread, and believe this problem is occurring in 5.0 Genesis engines, whether R-Spec or not. Is that correct? Is it also happening in the Equus 5.0 engines?

That seems to be the issue.

Yes just the 5.0 GDI.

Switched to Quaker state 5w-30 full synthetic and have used 1 qt through about 2750 miles. Now I am about 600 miles from my next 3750 mile oil change and haven't used any more oil. We will see when I get to 3750 miles where it ends up. BTWm my cars MFG date is 7-11, bought it in Oct 12.
