Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

gameday... Thanks. And keep us posted. Might have a v6 issue?

Yours a 2013, or 2014?

2013 The car doesn't seem to be laboring hard during acceleration and the shifts are nice and smooth, you can barely hear it running once it's warmed up.

Hope it was fluke with the assembly line not topping it off.

I got tired of dealing with my oil consumption issue, I traded my 2012 R-Spec in on Thursday and treated myself to a 2014 R-Spec. Glad I did..WOW!!!!What a different car now. Better ride, better performance i.e. a lot faster & quicker, interior is better...everything is better, and I'll not have to be concerned about oil consumption problems anymore. BTW, I got a great deal at $2000 below invoice plus all the incentives. My payments are $50 less than the 2012. It was a no brainer for me.

I too traded in my Rspec. I was hoping Hyundai would make me a killer deal knowing my situation but they did not come through. I ended up getting a used G37 Sport sedan (6 speed). They gave me 31k for my car which was more than the Hyundai dealer offered.

When I went to the dealer to get the form for the reimbursement of the extended warranty, the finance guy was still trying for my business and he offered me a deal on a '13 that I would have gone for originally. I had already made the deal for the G, so I thanked him and left.

Sorry I couldn't have stayed and fought with you all but I just wasn't comfortable with keeping the car with a replaced engine.

It was a sad good bye for the Genny but the G has made up for it. Glad to be driving a manual again and the car has an awesome "sporty" feel. The seats are AWESOME.

I'll keep an eye on the boards to see how the '15 is holds up.

I've come to the same conclusion- I'm going to dump my Rspec. What is this about reimbursement for the warranty? Also, how many miles did you have on yours?

Before you guys get too frustrated with a situation that's out of your hands and get rid of your Genesis - go through Hyundai Motor America. A lot of times they'll do you right and either buy the car back or give you a new one. It's not acceptable that a car normally burns this much oil. If you're having push back, just file a BBB Auto Line gets manufacturers to be a lot more receptive of the issue to come to a resolution.

I paid for $1,500 for the bumper to bumper extended warranty. I received a full refund.
I had 18,000 miles on the car.

I too am going to get rid of my 2012R-Spec. I'm tired of putting oil in it every 1k or so miles, its like a qt every other fill up. Gets real annoying. I think I'm going to look at a 2014 Gray R-Spec, or a Mercedes in the next few months After winter is over.

Why would you dump one R-Spec, only to buy another? I don't believe the problem has been resolved, has it?

From what I have seen as to how Hyundai handle their customers regarding the oil consumption on the 5.0s, I would not purchase another 5.0 or for that matter another Hyundai.

I would go to another brand of car.

I like my R-Spec. I think it is a nice looking car, but Hyundai is really lacking something in qulaity and customer care.

2500 miles on a 2013 RSpec purchased in March 2013 (yeah I don't drive it much)
Oil still at same level as the day I bought it. Maybe I got a good one. :)

You are one of the lucky ones dude.

They changed something.
A member of this forum who got his 2012 5.0 engine replaced due to excessive oil usage, posted that the HMA rep told him categorically that the new engine will not have the same problem, so they probably did fix it.

If true, it's sad that they solved the issue for future cars, but refuse to correct the issue for purchased cars.

Here's the key point

A member of this forum who got his 2012 5.0 engine replaced due to excessive oil usage...

You gotta make the effort to get Hyundai to replace your engine if you're having this issue. I don't blame Hyundai for not offering to replace everyone's engine without first documenting it has an oil problem.

He who screams the loudest...

I'm now at 3700 miles since my last oil change and down a 1/2 a quart. I can live with that. I change a 4k

I'm between 5500 and 6000 since my initial oil change (put in Mobil 1 5w-30). The oil level hasn't changed.

I am pretty sure it was fixed by the time first 2013's rolled out (maybe before that).

I'm on the 3 and final top off/oil change for this test...I will not last down for Hyundai. I will fight until they fix or take this car back

Yes they did. I now own a 2014 and its fine. The whole car, drive, engine matted to transmission, seats, head unit, everything is better in the 2014, and it's still my sexy Genny!!! LOL. Good luck guys.

If you bought a first production 2012 R-Spec sedan 5.0, it's a faulty engine. Every person on this board who has one has reported the same issue. Generally speaking, if your 5.0 was manufactured between June 2011 & January 2012, you have a faulty engine. It was after that period, that Hyundai realized they had a problem with the 5.0 engines, however, if you didn't report it, they would not notify you. The problem has been fixed, and subsequent production lines do NOT have oil consumption problems. I bought a 2014 because I love the car, it's style, its looks and how it performs, especially since they fixed everything that needed to be improved in it. Some have asked me why I just didn't wait for the new model to come out for 2015. My answer is simple....I will NOT buy another first year production model again, cause it's going to have bugs in it also. So I'll wait till 2016, then I'll buy. This gives them time to work the bugs out of the new model. I wish the best of luck to everyone with the oil consumption problem in their 2012, I just didn't want to deal with it anymore.
