• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Greetings

I am a new member who is love with the Genesis Sedan. I am in the market literally next month and I am mentally ready to take a leap to buy it. I have been waiting, searching and watching various car sites and I think I have found what I want. I know there have been some topics raised about the 2011 - 2013 models and their strengths and weakness.

I will be coming from a GAS Hungry but reliable 2005 Nissan Armada (5.6L V8)
I am extremely interested in either the 3.8 V6 or the beautiful 4.6 with TECH package. My absolute favorite car color and all i have ever owned is white. Below are the list of strong prospects and I just need a shake of heads for yea or nay. Thanks in advance!!

1. 2012 Genesis 4.6 - 25,111k miles CPO - $24,995.00 (BLACK/Sandal)
2. 2011 Genesis 3.8 - 45k miles CPO - $19,994.00 (White/Cashmere)
3. 2013 Genesis 3.8 - 32k miles CPO - $21,830.00 (White/Cashmere)no tech
4. 2011 Genesis 4.6 - 49k miles CPO - $23, 596.00 (White/Cashmere)

So many choices! The Black 4.6 is very sweet. I have not test driven any of them. I am gathering all my data first. Any comments or concerns would be great.

Thanks

First off, welcome to the forum. I too fell in love with the Genesis when we first test drove one back in 2012. We are currently looking at the 2015 MY and hope to be pulling the trigger on one in the coming weeks.

I would go with the one with the lowest miles and make sure you get the Extended Hyundai Platinum Warranty. I do believe the 4.6 isn't part of the oil consumption issues that plagued the 5.0's in 2012. Just my 2 cents

Welcome! :welcome:
re: oil burn
4.6's don't have oil burn issues. The oil burn problem is only in the early MY 2012 5.0 engines with manufacture dates up to spring 2012.

re: 2012 vs. earlier models
  • You get the newer body style in 2012: lights front and rear, side skirts and minor bumper refinements.
  • The suspension in the 2012 is superior to the 2009-2011, and the 2012 has the butter-smooth 8 speed transmission. The difference in ride between the 2009 and 2012 is about as much as the 2012 to the 2015.
  • The only complaint about the 2012 MY drivetrain was that under certain conditions the 8 speed tranny would hesitate during downshifts under heavy acceleration (i.e. WOT/kickdown switch when pulling out into traffic from a rolling start). I have tried this at a few speeds (driving straight) and have yet to experience this, and while a post on these forums has reported an available software fix, the service history I got from the dealer does not show any TCU/ECU/head-unit software changes.

I will assume that the condition of all cars is at least very good or better as CPOs:
1 - price is excellent. Low miles. <-- Buy this car :)
2 - high miles, not a 2012 suspension, you can do better.
3 - high miles, good price (assuming base model here) and better price if it's a premium, but you WANT the tech for the Lexicon!
4 - Hi miles, not a 2012. This car will never sell at this price, unless of course it comes equipped with a LB_PBW(TM).

My advice:
  • Good tires make all the difference in the world with the Genesis. Avoid Dunlops like the plague. Go with Michelins or Contis (other than MXM4). If you're up in the hills, get a set of Blizzaks or X-ice for winter.
  • Use cars.com, edmunds, kbb, autotrader, dealer websites, non-Hyundai dealer sites, etc. to get prices for car condition and market in your area. I shopped around quite a bit for about 6 months until I found my 2012, and I knew exactly what my '09 should/would sell for and what I should pay for the '12 (in the end I was within $300 of my target).
  • Search these forums. Read until your eyes bleed ... and then read some more. There's a huge amount of good information here!

Many thanks for the warm greeting!! I will have to inquire about the Ext. Warranty. I will rant about my experience at the dealership today.

If you get the extended Platinum Warranty, you may be able to dispense with CPO designation, since there would be some overlap in warranty coverage you would be paying for. The dealer has pay Hyundai Motor America for using the CPO designation since HMA adds on to the warranty.

@AlwaysForward & @Gunkk,

Thank you both for the great advice. I really appreciate it. Thanks for the welcome also!!

Well taking the WISE advice from Gunkk, I ventured out to the Dealership in my area. There she sat, 2012 Black/Saddle 4.6!!! It was so clean until I kept walking up on it.
It had rockchips on the lower front and the hood. The hood had lots of swirl marks as if someone used a hard rag to wipe it down or something. The rear valence (like a lower bumper kit) had chips too. Other than those small things the car was damn near flawless with 25k miles on it. I had the following with me for ammo:

1. DVD Audio CD with Electric Light Orchestra, Hall & Oats and some other great sounds music on it.
2. List of the Genesis at least 100 miles away with all options
3. Ton of questions

Welp, my wife and I stood out there for 20 mins until someone decided to ask if we needed help. Welp they said ok and kept going in the same direction. Then 5 mins later another gentlemen ask if we been helped and we said no. So i told him that I was interested in the car so he said ok I will be right back with that info. So we waited. Waited 20 mins!!! I am in SC so the damn weather is like DESSERT it was hot outside. So i see someone else walk by and I ask where was the guy, "Oh he is with a customer" I SAID WTF!! I was pissed!!
Now I will say that it was kinda crowded and they looked like they were selling cars but man come on!! Customer Service (Jim Hudson Hyundai).
I noticed they are open on Labor day so i think I will go back and let them know how displeased i was with the service.
I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks again!!!

Hi
What should I be looking out for to not get jipped?

Hi

The Platinum Extended Warranty can be purchased from any Hyundai dealer. Don't pay more than $1400 for it (assuming the used car you are looking at still qualifies for it). Try calling Jim Ellis Hyundai in Atlanta for a quote. If you get that warranty then you don't need a CPO status on your car, since you would be paying for redundant warranty coverage (CPO extends 10 year - 100K mile drivetrain warranty to used cars that is normally only available to original owners). The Platinum Extended Warranty would also cover the drivetrain and other components up to 10 years or 100K miles (if you get the right warranty).

A dealer is going to want at least $1000 more for a CPO car than a non-CPO car, all other things equal, since they have to pay HMA for the extra warranty coverage that comes with a CPO.

If you have any other questions, I would recommend to search this forum.

update:
2. 2011 Genesis 3.8 - 45k miles CPO - $19,994.00 (White/Cashmere)
price has dropped to $18,994.00

What do you think??? 45k miles?? and it is not a 4.6 V8

Not sure if this helps, but I just purchased a 2009 Black on Black Sedan 4.6L with Tech Package/Lexicon the whole 9 for 19k. I'm in the south Florida market - felt that was a great price. Tires still had nipples on them - brand new. No complaints thus far…I haven't driven the base model so I am not a good advocate of decision making on the difference in upgraded model, but with that being said I don't think I could EVER consider the drop in HP. Love my baby =)

I'd get a lower mileage one. The local dealer had a 2011 Equus that was traded in with only 10K on the clock. I rule out any used vehicle that has more than 15K under any circumstances which is probably why I never buy used.

Too high. Check Edmunds or NADA and present the printout to the dealer and be prepared to walk.

What equipment does it have?

This is a four year old car in reality insofar as the title is concerned.

Whatever you do make sure you have at least the premium package.

I'd bet that he has that price padded by $5K for his profit. That's where the dealers make their money along with the service department.

That is the asking price. Never, ever, pay the asking price. Never.

If you have a month and white is your favorite color, wait for it. Good dealers will turn their inventory over the next 30 days, so you will have a whole new selection soon.

Decide now if you want the V6 versus V8. That will help simplify your search substantially.
* V8 with tech will be easier to find
* V6 will give you 1 MY newer or lower miles (or both) for the same budget

To me, the 2012 was well worth it. Many little cosmetic differences, plus the suspension. So, spend some quality time side-by-side in a 2011 and 2012 to make sure you are comfortable with the differences.

If you are OK with a previous rental, by might be able to find a 2013 formal rental, CPO at a killer price.

Thanks for the advice.
I went to the dealer to at Least look at the Black - 4.6V8 and a couple was test driving it. 30 mins later they bought it for about $23k. UGUG!
I am still looking..

So far the 2012 is my favorite as far as used. And yes, White and 4.6 is my choice.

Apparently it is fully loaded. After looking at that year, I do not like the way it is designed...

It looks like you have settled on your target: 2012 4.6, White, mid $20K price range. Aim for $23K, but be prepared to spend $25K to $27K when the right one shows up!
