  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am trying to tap into 12V power through rear view mirror's wire harness in my new 2015 Genesis 3.8 AWD.

The harness is concealed and I assume that it can be accessed by removing the large black plastic cover mounted on the windshield.
I just wanted to confirm how to remove the cover. I don't want to break anything and I am hoping that someone here has done it and knows how to properly take the cover off.

Wow... Good question. I'm brave on removing stuff, but that one, to me, is off limits. Too many sensors in that black shroud.

MAYBE befriend a shop tech and get him to show you the removal process??

Ok... I just spent all of 20 min looking through the online shop manual. It is not a big deal to pop off the 2 covers behind the mirror.

Bend the mirror all the way down and GENTLY pry off the 2 covers. You should find 12vdc there but there's no info on which wire. STAY AWAY FROM EIRES GOING TO RAIN SENSOR OR LAS SENSOR. you may have to probe wires to find +&-.

Thank you for spending time to research this!

Which way do I pull on the cover to pry it off? Away from the windshield? I am afraid to pull on it to hard.

Yes. Away from the windshield. There is a black plastic base that looks like it stays stuck to the windshield but the cover pops away from that base.

I actually just popped out the middle small section. It is secured by tabs.. no need to remove the whole plastic cover. It allows access to the connector with wires...I have also used a Blend Mount and wiretap to tap into the harness allowing switched power for my 9500ix.. I'll try to get pics up today when I get home.

I look forward to seeing the pictures. Which wire was the switched power?

Nicely done!

Cover to remove.. small rectangular piece, simply angle mirror down and "pop' it out.

I used the Grey (+) for switched power with cars accessory, and the black (-) for ground. I used the Blendmount mirror tap (Nano size)

I stuck the wiretap leads into the grey (+) and black (-) wires.
I also used the supplied zip tie to secure the wire about 1/4" up from the connection. Also used needle nose pliers to get the wire taps in a bit more..

Thank you very much for those pictures and instructions. I got these "stealth cords" for my escort X50 from my previous car and will be installing my radar this weekend.

No Problem! Post pics when done!

This is an excellent tutorial, thank you for sharing. When I get my new Genesis this will be one of the few mods that I will make, along with 32% window tint and re-badge the rear deck lid. I'm planning to get the new Escort Passport Max.

Well done Mistermac, and thank you. I used your instructions and my install is complete. I installed the Escort Passport HD Max2. The detactor has Bluetooth pairing with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android. Really love this configuration, especially the "Escort Live" reporting feature on the app.

i'll be hardwiring my 9500Ix in today after summons to make a forced donation to the hanover, virginia government yesterday

Contemplating trying this. I already have my radar detector hardwired but I took the non-invasive route of running a cord from the the detector (mounted high to the left of the rearview mirror) under headliner gap and A-pillar, down the side of the door behind the weatherstripping and behind the lower plastic into the fuse box area. I used an Add-A-fuse to a switched source in the fuse box and grounded to the large bolt in the side of the fuse box. It's clean and you can't see more than the 2" of wire from the detector.

It's probably not the best location up so high but it definitely works there and I avoided tapping factory wires. That's something I want to avoid as much as possible with this car though I did tie in to the speaker leads to add a larger sub to the trunk.

I'm headed to Germany next month. Radar detectors are illegal there... So I'll be selling my 9500ix , blend mount and wire tap cable for $425. Message me if interested. Detector is less than a year old and it's the Blue LED version. Have all original accessories and case.

I feel your pain. Been there. On I-81. Statie used a radar-detector detector to decide the it was me in a long line of cars that he needed to pull over. Only thing that would prevent that is turning the unit off.

yeah, the 9500's can be detected but the redlines aren't....with the amount i now have to spend on a lawyer to get this crap dropped it's worth the risk.. i've never been detected but the first time i am i'll upgrade to the redline

Thanks for the great installation pics, MisterTMac! Used them to install a Black Vue dashcam on my new V6 HTRAC. Took all of about 30 minutes.
