  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Synthetic Oil

I was told that regular oil is what is required in this vehicle and I may be wrong but I thought the manual says the same thing?

Also, other than using the correct weight for your particular climate, for those of you that recommend one brand over the other, what do you notice when using one brand vs. the other? I never realized that oil brand had any appreciable differences.

Much to my surprise, the owner's manual at p. 8-6 does, in fact, mention Quaker State as a "recommended" oil for both engines.

I would heartily recommend ignoring that recommendation and using a synthetic like Mobil 1. I've used it for 40 years and have no reservations whatsoever about it.

There used to be a list on the internet of high performance cars in which Mobil 1 came as standard - it may still be around somewhere.

What have I noticed? Better gas mileage, better running engine at low temps. , and much cleaner looking oil when I change it. Doesn't break down like dino oil.

Can I go from regular to synthetic? I haven't done my first oil change yet. Thanks.

By all means - you can even mix if you wanted to.

That is not a recommendation, it is a paid advertisement. Also known as "product placement" in the entertainment industry.

BTW, Quaker State is a band name of SOPUS (Shell Oil Products US), which also owns Pennzoil. It is common knowledge that Pennzoil is the "premium brand" of SOPUS.

I had my suspicions - that's why I put "recommended" in quotes. And, some people have stated that the car came with Quaker State, and this is probably the basis for that conclusion.

I doubt that Hyundai vehicles built in Korea come factory fill with Quaker State, since I believe Quaker State is only sold in the US (oil is sold under the Shell brand in most parts of the world outside the US).
