Sunroof Rattle

Have they offered anything in compensation? I love my Genesis, but the fact I paid 40k for a car that has issues 3 months after buying it has me incredibly frustrated.

I just got a call from them.

We've talked about compensation before, but they don't want to fully address it until the problem is totally fixed - and I agree with that.

Also, they want the District Parts and Service Manager to meet and drive with me next week which I look forward to. Supposedly he's driven or ridden in it before and pronounced it fixed. NOT!

This has uncovered the first problem I've found with Genesis not being a separate brand. The tech and service managers who've driven my car have commented on what a "nice car" it is apparently because they haven't really spent much time driving one before, resulting in them thinking it rides and sounds much nicer than the cars they're used to. Consequently, even a vibrating Genny still rides nice and they think it's fine.

PS: By HMA's count my car has been out of service for 35 BUSINESS DAYS! Apparently, they don't even count all of the weekends it's been missing from my driveway. I'd call that excessive.

I do have to say they haven't given up, but it's hard to keep any confidence in the process.

I was wondering the same thing. My noise doesnt sound like a rattle so much as a creak, almost like plastic being bent the wrong way. I haven't had a chance to test it out but plan on doing so this weekend.

Yes- let me know but I know the Creaking sound that I heard when applying pressure to those 2 outer strips is exactly the same sound that I'm getting when going over rough surfaced roads etc. It will be interesting if others here try the same thing and hear what they have to say-

CKON try applying pressure to the two outer strips on the ext of the sunroof as I pointed out in my previous post- Let me know if that "Creaking" is what you are hearing inside as well? I have a feeling that could be the issue- It would make sense that when the car is possibly flexing or going over bumps that it would amplify that sound?

My roof is silent when closed. It only rattles when open part or all of the way and Hyundai's rep says they don't know how to fix it and has an open case number with their tech dept.

One noise I found on my own in the car was that the glove box door was rattling like the latch was too loose. I put a couple of shims in some appropriate places and the whole car is quieter so a couple of noises I thought were coming from somewhere else were coming from there.

Can you take some pieces of rubber (cut from hose bib gasket or something similar) and wedge in-between the strip and the sunroof and make the noise stop from the listening from the outside? If so, then drive the car to see if this corrects the issue. If so, head to your dealer and show him that this is causing the issue and from there, they should be able to develop a cure.

I have zero issues with mine although I don't listen for it as I have my ears on the awesome sound system this car has :D

Since my last post I got a "good deal" when I traded my last genesis in on a new one. I took delivery at night time and did not notice that there was an open crack in the rubber seal on fixed glass panel of the sunroof until the very next morning. So now on my second new genesis in less than one year, my vehicles will have been out of service for approximately 3 months and on both cars the sunroof will be replaced. It was making the same shifting noises as the last over bumps and uneven surfaces on the second day and history repeats itself the noises are soon to follow.

So my 2 week old car is in the shop for another new sunroof and I'm in a loaner for the 6th time. I give up on this as a solvable issue and I have never been more disappointed. They have a serious problem which I am sure goes beyond what has been recorded here.

I will be writing letters to everyone at hyundai including the CEO right away! This is the worst experience I have ever had buying anything especially since I traded my 2012 genny in for this. Good luck everyone but this issue looks to be hopeless to those who have it.

Makes me want to run right out and do the same thing! :(

Mine has been at the dealer since Monday and they have not been able to get rid of the sunroof noise/diagnose the root cause. They just called and told me they have escalated to Hyundai Engineering and are waiting on them for next steps.

BTW - they gave me a loaner 2015 Sonata Sport - not a bad car, but a BIG step down from the Genesis for sure.

So what steps can any of us take to get this thing solved? This is clearly an issue across a number of different cars and something they are going to have to address, especially since anyone who bought anything other than the base model had to buy the Signature package, which included the sunroof.

What annoys me most is that it's such a minor thing, yet is driving me bonkers. My wife says she can hear it but doesn't care at all, my issue is more with paying 40 grand for a car and having it sound like a 15 year old Corrolla in the span of three months.

I'm still waiting for Hyundai Customer Affairs to get back to me with an appointment for me to meet with one of their Field Engineers to have him assess my car's sunroof, vibration and wheel problems.

IMO, I think complaints about these issues should go straight to Hyundai Customer Affairs in addition to our dealers. There's no way for us to know how long it takes for such info to get to the people who can address it unless we give it a push. :) Then at least we know they've heard about it, whether or not they do anything about it.

PS: Does anyone know who manufactures these sunroof assemblies? I suppose the fix is going to have to come from them.

Does it carry more weight coming from individual people or a single thing cosigned by multiple? Would it be worth trying to organize something? I mean hell, they sent out that little Genesis card with the Hyundai phone numbers on the back and it came with a number, mine was 132. I assume this means I am the 132nd 2015 Genesis owner. I count at least 10-15 people having this issue on this forum, and thats just from people who decided to find this specific forum for their issues. That is a huge percentage.

Agreed - a large percentage. The vibration issue and the sunroof rattle seem to be the only consistent problems on the 2g. I don't recall seeing any other problem that occurs as frequently.

I am sure you all have read my previous post and i am still waiting for the replacement of the second sunroof on my second 2015 Genesis in 9 months. The # on my card from the first one is 259 so maybe i was the 259th owner and now who knows what on the newest one. I am absolutely certain that this issue extends beyond only the people who have reported on this forum based on acquaintances i have and other reports from dealers.

As i am writing i just got an email from the dealer and they said the last fix attempt (replacing the fixed rear glass and rubber seal) on my newest 2015 Genesis did not work and they will be ordering a whole new assembly again for an entire sunroof replacement - this car had 500 miles on it when i dropped it off after only 2 weeks of driving it.

The definition of crazy – doing something over and over again and expecting a different result!

At this point I don't even know what to do. I'm definitely going to take it into the dealership so my displeasure is known and its documented that my car has this issue, but are we really going to see anything change until Hyundai HQ does something about it?

I should add that this is so darn frustrating because it's the only blemish I've noticed on an otherwise fantastic car. The problem is now I get into the car and its all I can think about.

BTW when did you buy your car and when did you get that card? I bought mine in March, so my logic in "numbering" is faulty unless they just printed all of the cards at the same time. I got my card just a couple weeks ago.

Simply crank up that awesome sound system and the rattle will disappear :D

Just for reference I've located a rattle noise coming from the steering column. Between the steering wheel and the dash area there is a "plastic type cover" that has some play and it rattles when go over bumps on most days. I push down on it with my hand and the rattle stops. Just an FYI as another source for a rattle noise.

I wish my issue was as easy as that. Now it seems to be making noises whenever the car is in a flexed position, ie going over a speed bump or pothole, going into a driveway thats elevated from street level, etc. I'm not even sure I would call it a rattle as much as the sound of something being stressed or twisted, if that makes sense.

The body flex shifting noise is how all of this started for me. I bought my first one in November 2014 and the second one one month ago.

The only way that this issue will gain any traction is if everyone reports this as many times as possible Hyundai directly and I would suggest even calling them. I had a case number with the first car before my trade. This is what is at the bottom of my emails from them.
