Yeah, that fourth paragraph describing the interior seemed to not fit the rest of the article. Lack of space ship gauges, non-jet engine vents and smells unlike some handbag, seem desired by someone who never actually got in the car.

actually at the end both guests put the Genesis in their top two so that's pretty sweet.

Agreed. The interior is probably my favorite part of the Genesis, partly because it doesn't have space ship gages and jet engine vents. Some luxury cars' interiors are too over the top, while others just look like they tacked on a few aggressive styling cues to appear more modern and sporty. The interior of the Genesis, on the other hand, is classy and restrained. I expect I'll still enjoy looking at it five years from now.

This. While the exterior styling of Mercedes has been incredibly sharp the last several years - the interior continues to suffer from the same old thing since the early 90's: over the top, too much. It is trying too hard to be too much - to the point that it is gaudy or tacky, to be honest. I just do not like the dash, center controls, steering wheel look & feel at all. I have to say this is what turns me off from the Equus as well. It is just too much & is trying too hard.

BMW on the otherhand, specifically the 5 and 7 series - from which I think the G2 takes a LOT of interior design cues and influences from - feels and looks very refined, very organized & logical. That brings an inherent level of luxury for those who appreciate that kind of thing - and it does not at all feel gushy or tacky in doing so. This is probably the best approach the G2 could have taken - the interior design language is very, very similar. The layout of the center controls, the center armrest, the steering wheel controls, the trim lines going across the dash to the passenger side, the door trim lines, the driver aid buttons on the left... all of it. While not outright copied or stolen from Bimmer - the design language influence is quite clear to be inspired by the 5 and 7 series. That combined with the quality of the material and feel in the seating goes a long way to giving the impression that you are driving a much, much nicer car.

The first time I sat in a G2 was within weeks of driving a 2 year old 5 series. As soon as I sat in it - the first thing that went through my head was, "Wow... this could be a BMW."

Talk about stepping up your game! Bravo, Hyundai.

It got my attention enough that I knew it would be on my radar when it was time to get into another car - and in fact right now I am essentially pitting it against a CPO 5 series or a slightly more used 7 series. These are the only 3 cars being considered at this point - and it really is a close race - despite the class & size difference vs the 7. The G2 is a toe-to-toe competitor for the 5, in my opinion.

In your analysis, be sure to include costs after the CPO warranty on the BMW is over. Even during the CPO, the required maintenance outside of the original paid maintenance warranty period can be onerous. Love the cars, but they can get expensive outside of warranty.
 
My wife has a 2015 AWD Genesis and I have a 2015 2WD. Both are 6's.We had a 2012 8cyl. We find the 6 is plenty. We rented a 2015 BMW 5 and drove from Key West to Naples Fla. That's a good variety of road conditions and about a 5 hour drive. I'll take the Genesis in comfort, space and looks. And, since labels don't impress me. The Genesis is by far a better value. That's JMO.
 
The fact that they decided to compare a FWD CVT with a RWD auto proves that they should be in another line of work.
