  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Anyone know the easiest spot to tap into an existing speaker for line level out to add an amp for a sub?

I think my installer tapped into one of the speakers in my rear deck. He initially tapped into the subwoofer but we found that when we were tuning the gains, for some reason no matter how low or high we adjusted the gains, the volume of the bass would not go up or down. Tapping into one of the speakers in the rear deck made it possible for the gains to be set correctly.

My only concern though is since we are tapping into a signal that has already been processed and possibly crossedover, I don't know what frequency the rear deck speakers are cutoff at. I always wonder if the bass could go lower, especially since my box is tuned to 33hz. Sometimes interior speakers are cutoff at 80hz or so to keep them from trying to reproduce a sound that they will just distort and blow.

With that said, I wish I was tapped into the sub that (hopefully) actually goes down to the 20-30 neighborhood. Although since it is just an 8" I doubt that as well.

I've used this amplifier/subwoofer setup in a different car in the past and bass would hit so hard. Now, same exact setup but different car, not so much. Not sure if it's the improved sound deadening (previous car was a civic) or if I'm tapped into a not so optimal speaker.

Any thoughts?

I tapped into my factory sub wiring at the sub connections. The bass control on the factory head unit adjusts the gain. It works perfectly for me.

I was going to try the same, but I can't find the wire. I can not find it on the underside of the sub.

Before I rewire everything, does raising the bass on the factory head unit also raise the bass in the speakers in the car? I don't want the smaller speakers in the car trying to reproduce bass they aren't designed to reproduce, causing them to clip and distort. I'd rather have the bass levels on the inside speakers low low while I have the gains high on the sub amp since the sub takes care of everything 80 and below anyway.

Basically I wish I knew where the factory speakers were crossed at.

The stock amp is in the rear fender in the trunk. I tapped into those wires.

what fender/ quarter panel? driver or passenger?

how do you know the wire that goes to the sub?

Is it easy to get to?

Driver side rear quarter panel, underneath the trunk liner. As for which wire I'm not sure as I had it installed at a shop. I just stood by and watched. The part where the installer was actually tapping into the wires I gave the installer some space as I didn't want to have both our heads in the trunk at the same time. Maybe call an audio shop and see if they can pull up a schematic? I got the sub installed in my 2015 back in April and they already had the wiring diagrams available.

Thanks! Good to know. I just don't trust Installers near me
