- New 'Genesis' brand will compete with the world's leading luxury car brands
- Six-model line-up begins roll-out from December catering for 'new luxury' customers, delivering personalized and human-centered experiences
- Refined performance, athletic elegance in design and human-focused innovation will elevate the Genesis brand

November 4, 2015 - Hyundai Motor has announced an all-new global luxury brand – Genesis – that will deliver 'human-centered' luxury through a range of new models that feature the highest standards of performance, design and innovation.

Created for a new generation of discerning consumers, Genesis will be a stand-alone brand that operates alongside the company's popular Hyundai marque. Capitalizing on its success in the fast-growing global car market, Hyundai Motor will launch six new Genesis models by 2020 and will compete with the world's most renowned luxury car brands.

The Genesis brand seeks to create a new definition of luxury, one that will provide a new platform for future mobility centered on people. By anticipating human needs at every touch point, Genesis models will embody four key aspects: Human-focused innovation, refined and balanced performance, athletic elegance in design and hassle-free customer experience.

"We have created this new Genesis brand with a complete focus on our customers who want smart ownership experiences that save time and effort, with practical innovations that enhance satisfaction. The Genesis brand will fulfill these expectations, becoming a market leader through our human-centered brand strategy," said Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Company Vice Chairman.

Genesis models will boast outstanding driving dynamics and design, with innovations tailored to closely-meet the needs of customers. The new model line-up will distance itself from the traditional technological overload of brand-focused competitors, concentrating instead on a personalized, hassle-free customer experience. Continuing the customer-oriented approach that flows through every Genesis model, sales and service staff will provide rapid and attentive service to customer's requests.

To elevate and differentiate the Genesis brand from Hyundai, a distinct design identity, emblem, naming structure and customer service offering is being established.

Genesis models will be badged with a new wing-type emblem, redesigned from the version used on the current Genesis model to create an even more luxurious look. This emblem firmly cements the Genesis models as a collective family of luxury models under the Genesis nameplate.

The Genesis brand will also adopt a new alphanumeric naming structure. Future models will be named by combining the letter 'G' for Genesis with a number, 90, 80 or 70 etc., representing the segment.

Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center and Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor said, "The Genesis models will provide technological innovation, excellent driving performance and luxury to customers. Every Genesis model will be created with the needs of our customers in mind, so the resulting car will perfectly meet their needs without any unnecessary burden or excess."

Fitted with the latest proactive safety technologies, intuitive convenience features and IT connectivity, Genesis models are engineered to provide excellent ride comfort while retaining confident sportiness.

To develop a distinctive and differentiated design for the new Genesis brand vehicles, Hyundai Motor has created a Prestige Design Division. From mid-2016 Luc Donckerwolke, who was previously responsible for the design of Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, SEAT and Skoda models at the Volkswagen Group, will lead this new division alongside his role as Head of the Hyundai Motor Design Center. The work of the new Prestige Design Division will be overseen by Peter Schreyer, as part of his group-wide design responsibilities as President and Chief Design Officer (CDO) of Hyundai Motor Group.

Peter Schreyer commented, "In creating the design signature of Genesis brand cars, we set out to display confidence and originality, creating highly desirable products that present new charm through innovative styling and proportions."

The name 'Genesis', which also means new beginnings, hints at the new values and standards that the brand will bring to the global luxury car market. Initially on sale in the Korean, Chinese, North American and Middle Eastern luxury car markets, the Genesis brand will expand its reach to Europe and other parts of Asia as the model range grows to full strength.

Setting the brand's cars apart from competitors, innovation will begin with the consumer, with customer requirements directing development. This philosophy echoes the vision of Hyundai Motor to be a 'lifetime partner in automobiles and beyond', with the 'Modern Premium' brand direction of Hyundai reinterpreted for the new Genesis marque.

Since the launch of its first cars in 1967, Hyundai Motor has grown quickly to become one of the world's leading automakers. The strategic decision to create an all-new luxury car brand is recognition of the company's strengths and its global ambitions. By introducing new customers to Hyundai Motor and elevating its competitiveness, the new Genesis brand will enable more people to experience the premium value of Hyundai Motor.

I'm really excited to see how this plays out. Hyundai has a lot to gain from succeeding and a lot to lose by failing. Hopefully the brand continues to push the value equation and provides us all with exciting and luxurious rides. Good luck, Hyundai!

Interesting they don't mention what these 6 models are going to be.

I have a feeling the Azera will remain in Hyundai's badging - and will end up being their top of the line.

So what do we think the other 2 will be? So far we have the Genny Coupe, G2 Sedan, Equus and the Vision. Think they will go with an SUV? Something else?

I'm not sure how long that "value" thing is going to last - but I suspect it'll be present in the beginning.

The models will be the Equus, the Genesis Sedan, a new car beneath the Genesis Sedan, a new car to REPLACE the Genesis Coupe and I believe a midsize and small SUV.

The Azera will remain in the Hyundai lineup and be the flagship of THAT specific brand.

As you mentioned, they probably need two SUV's (which are selling like hotcakes at Acura, Lexus, BMW, MB, Infiniti, etc). But maybe they could temporarily do something like Hyundai Santa Fe, where they have the Sport version that is a little smaller, and the larger Santa Fe with 3 row seating.

That would probably work. It's going to be a little difficult to beat the Santa Fe. That's a pretty nice automobile. I wonder if they're going to tame the Hyundai version to let the Genesis version shine...

Thanks for posting this Sam. Greatly appreciated. We are in the process now negoitating a deal on the 2016 Santa Fe Limited Ultimate addition with the same dealer I got my Genesis from for my wife. Should have it finialized on Saturday.Wish we could wait until the Genesis SUV comes out.

That new Santa Fe is a heck of an automobile. My brother in law just bought one and he's kind of a car snob. He's thrilled with it. I sat in one a few months ago and couldn't believe it wasn't already in the Genesis lineup...

The value-thing will always be there (the comparable Lexus models are still a value compared to MB and BMW).

Presently, the Genesis undercuts the Japanese competition by about $7-8k and the Equus less so b/c it has priced in the higher-end amenities like loaners and concierge service.

Figure that the Genesis brand will do loaners (probably not concierge service for the entire lineup but who knows?) and some other things which should increase the price by $1.5k or so.

If Hyundai decides to go with the separate but adjoining showroom (and not a totally separate dealer network) - will be another $2k-3k, which will still enable the Genesis brand to undercut the Japanese by $3-4k (maybe a little more).

Going with a whole separate dealer network is going to make it real difficult to undercut the Japanese, esp. when the Yen is so weak in comparison to the Won.

Conflicting sources - some say 2 CUVs but other say 1 CUV (midsize and based on the Genesis platform) and 1 SUV (meaning something along the lines of the Escalade).

An SUV would be surprising (Kia is keeping the Mohave aka Borrego around since it's actually fairly popular in certain markets); if they go that route, would still need a smaller CUV.

The Azera will remain in the Hyundai lineup and be the flagship of THAT specific brand.

In Korea, the Hyundai flagship would be the Aslan (unless they decide to kill it).

Don't think the SF has an interior befitting a luxury model (the SX-L trim of the Sorento is closer to being luxury).

The Genesis crossover is slated for 2019 (really should have started development earlier) and seems pretty firm that it will be based on the Genesis (with that time-table, the crossover might have a chance of being based on the next gen underpinnings).

We do know that the 1st Genesis brand model will be the Equus replacement and while we have seen spyshots, these pics give the best indication of the design.

Based on the spyshots - thought the greenhouse was a bit bland and didn't like the shape/design of the taillights, but the front end looks good (a better grill and headlight shape/design than on the Genesis).

Hopefully, the Genesis/G80 MCE will make the front-end more like the G90.

If I had to guess - I think that is more likely to be the G3 under the new brand badge than it is to be the Equus - which if they want to keep it in the lux competition bracket it is in now will be much more gushy in it's design to keep with the S class, 7 series and A8. Otherwise the competition and potential buyers will see it just as a warmed-over G2 and it will be ignored by that potential customer base.

I'm sure current Equus owners will be eager to rip off their Equus badges starting next month and replace them with the new Genesis G90 badges. Wha!?

Speaking of the current Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport, which I own, there is no reason why the new Genesis company could not have a lux version on the market by '17. More likely, though, they will have a brand new Santa Fe model ready by '18 and at that time they will also goose it upscale as a Genesis. They really should have done this for '16, but I guess they had a lot of other things going on.

I hope the new "Prestige Design Division" doesn't mess up the Genesis sedan. Even small things like changing to a 3-spoke steering wheel would constitute a "mess up" imo. For example, I hate the current rev of the LS460 when Lexus switched it to their new corporate design. The first rev of the current model I really liked.

Guess we'll see how this goes..... should be interesting to see how the marketing is done in coming months/years with new products.

I think a lot of folks are making too much of the new Genesis brand in North America. The Genesis is already sold under its own brand name in Korea. That is why there are no H badges on the KDM Genesis, and how we can get the KDM wing badges imported from Korea into North America to put on our cars. The importers just go to a Hyundai dealer in Korea and by the OEM badges there.

So don't expect a major redesign for the 2017 Genesis G80. It probably will have some changes (modified tail lights and other mid-generation refresh stuff), but the changes will likely be same as if they had decided to continue selling it under the Hyundai brand in North America.

Additionally, as everyone knows, the Genesis branded cars will be sold at Hyundai dealerships for the time being. I would bet they remain at Hyundai dealers for a longer time than people think.

Don't forget too that dealers who sell Genesis and Equus vehicles (not all Hyundai dealers do) are already required to have a special sections on their sales floor. These sections have special signage and flooring too. In other words, I don't expect a huge change at the dealerships anytime soon.

That may be true for Equus, but not sure about Genesis. My dealer does not have a separate waiting area/lounge for Genesis owners. However, I solve that problem by taking a shower as soon as I get home.

I can tell you about 4 dealers in the Chicagoland area that do not have special sections, flooring, etc at all. They are parked in the same showroom, in the same section and with the same flooring as the Elantra right next to it.

I think this is bold move for Hyundai. Will the existing Hyundai dealers get to sell the new Genesis Brand or will Genesis go the route of Acura, Infiniti, Lexus and create their own sales / service model?

Initially, the new Genesis brand will be sold by existing Hyundai dealers. However, it is not clear if all dealers will sell them. Long term, they would prefer to have separate dealerships, if it makes financial sense.

I'll reply to myself. It's all clearly described here. I didn't say they currently have separate waiting rooms. Still, taking a shower is always a healthy practice. I encourage it.
