If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have a 2009 4.6 and I'm looking at a 2012 5.0 with 55000km on it. I've read a lot on oil burning problems on that year. Would it be a good idea to pass on this 2012? Is there a specific month that has that problem? Any info would be great!

Look through the oil thread and you will find several owners who have had problems and published their build dates.

I have a 2012 R-spec (build date April '12) and it has been trouble free.

no. I also on a 2012 5.0.. Its a great car...

From what Imhave learned, the oil consumption problem was caused by the use of some German made low friction piston rings that would not properly seat thereby allowing for oil blow by and the resultant consumption. Hyundai was only one of several manufactures that used these defective rings.

It appears that Hyundai figured this out and any vehicles with build dates after Feb. or March of 2012, possibly earlier, have good rings in them with no consumption problems. I have a 2012 5.0 built in June. Love the vehicle and it has been perfection since I first left the dealer with it..

There is a long thread in this forum about this.

Good to know thanks for that info. I will check out the build date of the car I'm looking at Wednesday.

Thanks for the help guys I picked up my r type today. It's build date is May so it should be good to go. It still has lots of warranty at least if I run into any problems.

Don't rely on the warranty sometimes they don't honor it.

In my case they CONFIRMED that it was consuming 1 qt of oil consumption after driving 1000 miles, then they told me it was normal.

They told me if it consumed 2 quarts it was abnormal.

Which is utter BS. My car had 7000 miles when I noticed this.
Mine had a manufactured date of 2012 March.

I hope you took that issue up to the Regional Service Manager for resolution. No way does any modern vehicle use 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

Also, we don't know if there was a finite cutoff of the use of the German rings that caused the problem. In other words, the build date might not be definitive. If the car uses that much oil there is definitely a manufacturing issue and should be resolved under warranty regardless of build date.

I did. The dealership contacted hyundai techline division and they refused to help me fixing this.

Basically breach in warranty. They dont want to fix it so i told them to give me my money back since it is a lemon. They keep making excuses one after another.

I contacted a lemon lawyer. I am filing lawsuit and getting them to acknowledge the lemon vehicle.

Hyundai is bullshit if you ask me. What 100,000 mile 10 yr warranty.

I taking legal approsche to their fsilure to provide me my warranty and lemon rights.

What was the outcome of this issue?

My 12 R Spec same issue. Oil disappearing... Ugh. Help. I just had to put a transmission in it at
63,750. I hate to say it but as much as I love the 429 hp, leather, heated cooled seats, handling, Lexicon, folding heated mirrors, rear shade, and all the other features that make this car so addictive....if the tranny breaks at under 65k and the car you have to add oil regularly as if it were gasoline......these 2012 cars are junk.

not all have this issue otherwise it would have been a recall.

with 160k I would expect any motor to burn oil.

I certainly would not!
My three highest mileage cars (not Hyundai) are at about 205K, 240K, and 300K. None of them burn oil, at least not enough to notice at 5/6 K oil change intervals.
