  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

You can chalk up another turned off potential Genesis buyer...as I was insulted with how much my local Hyundai dealership (Glendale, CA) was asking for the Genesis and how unprofessional they were in dealing with me.

Re: Another turned off buyer...

Hi Gradster. Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up!

Sorry to hear about your experience.. Give it some time or check out the next closest dealership. They're not all up-charging the Hyundai Genesis...

Anyway, I moved your post from a reply to an unrelated discussion to it's own topic - where it'll get the attention it deserves.. I hope you don't mind...

Thanks again!

Welcome aboard.

Yeah, it seems like more and more dealers are getting their stocks, and more and more are cancelling that non-sense called 'market adjustment' since they should know by now, that nobody is biting on that bait when people can simply go into other dealers that does not imply that nonsense. Based upon my phone conversations with 4 dealers in the Northern Garden State, none of them put an up-charge and goes strictly by MSRP, so I guess there ARE dealers that follow the rules as it should then try to rip off it's potential customers and I hope those who DOES rip the customers off finds out that it doesn't work and change their tactics soon.

All car dealers are opportunists. Whenever there is a limited supply someone will try and charge a premium just like a ticket scalper! There are too many distributors for this to hold up for very long. I guess that is why car buying is such a pleasure. (My wife still holds a grudge against the local Acura dealer after the way a salesman talked down to her *10 years ago*). Just move on to another sales rep I say.

Welcome. :welcome:

Not that I am here to defend Hyundai dealers, but some are good and some are bad. The ones I have bought from are stellar individuals and the dealerships are too. You have to look out for yourself, but it sounds like you are already doing that.

It is good advice to just move on to another dealer until you feel comfortable.

I personally haven't found any dealers that are willing to sell the Genesis at MSRP or lower. As a matter of fact I had a salesman call me today to gloat over selling a Genesis 3.8 tech package, I test drove Monday, for 52K, he was asking 55K. It retails for 40K. He told me that he has another 3.8 tech package coming in but he will need the full 55K on that one. I can't blame him for asking.

It will probably take a few months maybe even weeks for the supply to catch up to demand, then these premiums should go away. At least once the dealerships start paying the flooring interest for the cars.

This is a good site, if I remember right someone here bought a Genesis at $1,500 under sticker.

Personally, I think the dealer that sold that car for 52k is a scumbag feces muncher and the buyer must be brain damaged! I'm sure Hyundai would be thrilled to know that people are walking away from dealerships due to price gouging on a new (hopefully, breakthrough) model at a moment when having bodies in the showroom and positive word of mouth is everything. As a builder, Hyundai's eye is on the future with this new venture, where as these idiot salesmen trying to make another 4k to 10k on a sale are only looking at their next paycheck. Hyundai needs to check these clowns now!

Strongly agree. These losers are the biggest obstacle that plaques the possible succuss to all the works(though derivative design) that Hyundai ambitiously put together to IMPROVE their reputation. These few percentage of rip-off dealers are the ones that hurt the other half of the legitimate, and honest dealers that hurts Hyundai on a whole and they must do something about it.

Anybody have any thoughts as to whether reporting such dealerships to Hyundai corporate offices would have any effect?

Sales manager told me today that he would sell me a Genesis at 1,200 below msrp. Said it does him no good to have them sitting on his floor. He "wants to get them out in the community for potential customers to see". This was in casual conversation, so I bet I could get more than that with some negotiation.

I have always been treated respectfully by this dealership...so there are good ones out there.

Hey Anaheim, while not necessarily the closest to you, is selling @ MSRP (or so they say when I visited last week.)

I'm sure most dealerships are above board, but I have to admit, the dealer where I got my Sonata had the Genesis marked up 4 or 5k. Told 'em there would be no way in hell I'd pay anything above sticker. When I'm ready (not sure when that will be, trying to decide on whether to wait for the coupe or to just get the sedan) I'll be all over the internet looking for the best deal. I'll give my dealer a chance to retain my business though.

I'm not sure what the relationship is between corporate Hyundai and the dealerships. I do know that GM does not attempt to control dealer markup. GM dealers are a franchise and, as such, they buy the car from GM at a given price with the freedom to sell it for whatever the traffic will bear. MSRP stands for Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price and means just that. The ultimate price that a dealer will accept for a given vehicle depends upon all the same factors that any merchant considers when trying to sell a commodity for a profit. If a dealership has some dogs on his lot that he is forced to heavily discount he will attempt to bolster his profits by maintaining firmer prices on his hot movers. A simple matter of supply and demand.

Although I personally resent dealer markups, I am equally perturbed by the consumer who will pay the markup simply because he has to be the first guy on the block to own a particular car.

I hope to get my car this Saturday. My guy matched a $369 below MSRP 'internet price' by a competing dealer, tweaked my trade by $250, and I had a coupon, so final deal is $1119 under MSRP for the Tech Pkg.

John...I appreciate your comments and the whole supply and demand issue. I get it. But in situations such as this, I think the dealer and the salesman are being very short sighted by the fat payday they can receive now, when they (along with the parent company) can be better served in the long run by better word of mouth, customer satisfaction and cars on the road. And in the big picture, I'm sure that's what Hyundai wants. But then again, that's just me.

Now there's a guy with a head on his shoulders.. His dealership will be selling more Hyundai Genesis' than those who sell at a price most people won't pay...

Well i work at a World Largest Hyundai dealer in S Florida and we are at MSRP reason being only 8,000 genesis are being ship to US market for 2009 model with 700+dealer thats like less than 14 per dealer. i went 2 the genesis star training today and was told this by the trainers after that we wont get any till next summer for 2010:(

For what's supposedly the most important launch in Hyundai's history, they certainly do a piss-poor job at it.

I suggest people start looking at other cars as well.

A few years ago I was at the Good Guys car show and a dealer trucked in 3 new soltice's (first 3 I had seen) sold all 3 for over 60K each.

I'm sure that these 3 guys would rather have the 30K extra they spent, now.

The free market at work.
