Sunroof Rattle

I did show the service manager at the dealership the rigid collars from another thread here, and how maybe those could help reduce what seems to me to be excessive body flex in this vehicle (probably due to it's length and the fact that almost the entire roof is made of glass). Because it wasn't a Hyundai part they were not interested to pursue it.

Go ahead and pay to get it done anyhow. It's not all that expensive, and worth it.

Had a rattle problem, took it to the dealer, got the rail unit (that is a single piece with a fixed back glass) replaced as a whole.
Now no rattle, just subtle sound when tilted.

Add me to the list (2016 8K miles)....dealer is going to replace the sunroof.

Only issue now is I am arguing with the dealer and Hyundai about providing a loaner. Lost my temper with Hyundai customer service when she told me I can submit rental car recent after and they MIGHT approve reimbursement. I asked her how I would get pre-approval and said that wasn't done. She is working with dealer to have them submit as part of the warranty cost. Still no answer. Anyone else have an issue with loaners?

Can you give more details on this fix please? I am getting the whole new roof deal from Hyundai.

Update on mine. They are going to replace the whole roof. From what I have read and heard I think this is a temperature and material related problem/wear issue. Mine was in the shop per HMA and they adjusted the sun roof and glass attachments - this was in August in DC (read hot). The roof was quiet until I tilted it one day and went over some rough road - heard a loud creak/crack (like a nut/bolt slip or "break"loose) and the rattles were back. Today it dropped below 40 degrees and the roof was quiet. I think that the warmer the roof gets, the system loosens up some tolerances and the noise is heard. I think it is a nut/bolt system that loosens or rather slips with body flex over time (most people seem to notice the noises in 6 months or so after a fix) and is more noticeable in the warmer months/temps since the material (probably plastic and or glass) is expanding while the bolt is not. The converse is true during the winter months (the plastic or glass contracts) and the system tightens up. It is also probably due to the flex in the body causing the initial slip or break as most people here seem to notice the noise again after 3-6 months of driving (as was my experience). I have told my regional HMA rep about this - guess time will tell - any comments?

I do not think it is a seals issue.

Following posting of this message I sent an email to Dave Zuchowski to alert him of the issues I was having. He replied within an hour asking his people to resolve ASAP. Hopefully this is a good sign from Hyundai management.

Sure would be interested in knowing the result of Dave's request of his people to resolve the problem. Also would like to know more about the "rigid collars". I couldn't find where the thread mentioned it earlier.

I guesstimate about one month from my letter / email to Dave Z. I now have a new / rebuilt (by a specialist glass company outside Hyundai) sunroof and it is dead quiet. Ive got 36000 on my 2015...hope its fixed for good but sounds to me (from the posts) I should expect it back in about 4 to 6 months or at the end of summer.

In the meantime Im back in love with my 2015g5.0. And the 2016 G80 5.0 they loaned me was not nearly as fast/quick/responsive as my '15 and had no rear window shade (something the tech thought might be making the rattle). Not even considering a trade..

Still would like more info / details on this post:

Would be nice to know if they changed something mechanically or if they installed it better etc?

I've had the creak and rattle situation that is worse in the cold. The first 2 times they said they couldn't reproduce it. The sunroof stopped working and they fixed it by replacing sunroof carriage and sled assembly and also the defective left roof molding. The creaking has stopped. The rattle is much better but I feel like there are other rattles maybe coming from the rearview mirror or the radar in front of the rearview mirror. It's much better now than it was.

So I have the rattle from opening the sunshade, but can't say I have any squeaks/pops/groans from the sunroof assembly itself.

So is there any universally accepted way to fix the shade rattle? I am tempted to remove the map light console and dig around to see what could be loose. I suspect when the shade is retracted some spring is unloaded and not holding everything in place...

Funny you mentioned the loaner not being as responsive. the 2017 G80 3.8 Ultimate that I had for 1 weeks was quite nice. However, I also missed my 2015. There are some small changes that really stand out over time (brake feel and acceleration seemed delayed mostly). It was nice to get my 2015 back. Fortunately, my sunroof was completely replaced (after the seal replacement did nothing) and the car has yet to make a noise. The roof was installed by glass company / specialist for me as well. I do believe the assembly differs from our original (2015) unit, but it's hard to say for sure. I refuse to even open the sunroof at this point. The car is finally quiet. For those in middle TN, I went to Wilson County Hyundai -- overall good experience in working through these issues.

Hopefully yours continues to be noise free. I wasn't so lucky with my full replacement - perhaps opening the sunroof a couple of times in the summer was something I'm not supposed to do... My sunroof assembly was completely replaced back in February, and they too had a glass specialist come in to help with the replacement. About 5 months later the noise started to come back. So I had them check it again about a month ago -after having the car a week so the field engineer could come out to help with the diagnosis, they found a plastic piece that had somehow been broken inside the assembly in two places that was causing the noise. They replaced that and said all was good. Within a day or so the noise was back, quieter at first. But over about a week and a half it came back to full levels. I dropped the car off again last Monday (so they've had it this time for over a week now) and supposedly the field engineer was out yesterday to try and diagnose the issue again. The plastic piece that broke last time was fine this time. I keep saying to the service guys that the I think the length of the car and the tremendous flex that occurs when pulling into a parking garage (where I go up a slight but sudden incline) has to be causing something. You can definitely hear the whole roof make a noise during these driving situations. I even gave them the info from another thread on here about the rigid collars that help with the body flex, but they immediately said because it's not a Hyundai part they can't install them (I'm guessing that's just because Hyundai won't reimburse them for it). So they tend to agree with me that the body flex has something to do with the root cause, but then can't come up with a preventative fix for this based on what Hyundai has to offer. So far the only fix that lasts at least some length of time is the full replacement. But that's not cost effective for them to perform every 6 months, and I shouldn't be without my vehicle for this length of time so often. Especially when my dealer does not give me another Genesis as a loaner - at least this time they gave me a Tucson. Last time I was given a very small Elantra hatchback for 7 days.

LIke everyone else in this thread, mine was fine for a while and now there is noise. I can see the service records from the previous owner that it was supposedly addressed at a Hyundai dealership in the past. I"m debating whether to take it in or wait for a "true" fix to be figured out.

I doubt one has, hopefully they'll issue a TSB when it's been figured it (if ever)

Did you try removing the map light console? I know that if I push my fingers to the rear of the console I can feel movement, but it does stop the small rattle that has developed on my 3.8 Ultimate. I have found two screws that seem to hold the console in, but not sure if it the rest of it snaps in place or not and I'm afraid to try and pry it off.

So I just pulled the console out. The only thing holding it on after the screws are out is a metal clip on each side, and yes, they are tight but will come out if you pull firmly. You will also see 2 fingers on the rear of the console that slide into a plastic guide around the hole. There is where it got interesting. There is a lot of nice foam blocking the hole from the rest of the roof cavity. The foam seemed to have glue/tape holding it to one side of the space. If I grabbed that plastic guide and pulled down it sounded like the glue was popping on and off the surface, and was surprisingly loud. So I took some felt and shoved it in the space between the guide and roof to stop that mess. I will continue to monitor and see if that stops my noise.

Way to go! Thank you for the update! Please let us know if your efforts stopped the rattle, then I'll attempt the same cure!!

If anyone is annoyed about sounds coming from the map light control console area, please read my posts on 8/13/2016 & 9/17/2016 in this thread. Demand that the technician drop the console and add insulation, rubber seal, whatever they need to do. They know about it! It was an annoying creaking sound with every bump in the road and temperature sensitive. Mine happened at roughly 80 degrees and above. It's winter now, but still no creaking and I really enjoy my Genesis again!
