  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

Update on mine, they fixed the other things it was in for (steering column rattle and passenger door rattle [replaced seal]) but replacing another section of weather strip apparently did nothing to fix.

Now a tech field rep from Hyundai is coming out to try and diagnose/fix. Since I've heard they've had similar issues with the G80s, I'm not sure a fix exists anymore.

It never did. If you go through this thread - you will see the only "fix" is to replace the entire panoroof assembly - which takes several days, usually involves a glass shop and costs HMA about $3000 in parts plus another $750 in labor.

This fix only lasts for a period of time however... and then the problem resurfaces. My car is on it's 3rd roof in 31k and will probably end up needing another in the spring.

It is a design problem, and it is likely to be the chief reason it is not present in the G90.

We had a sunroof rattle in our 2015 Sonata. The whole roof AND windshield were replaced in summer 2015. It took them 3 weeks! Had 0 rattles since then. The fix is there, but it depends on the dealership if they are willing to fix it or not.

I have 1100 miles on my Genesis and it starts rattling. Will take it later to the same dealership and i'll let you know

I have a 2016 3.8 AWD Signature and Tech package with just over 4k miles. The sunroof started rattling, cracking, and popping around 1500 miles. I have had it repaired twice. The first repair was a re-torque of the frame, and the second was a total replacement of the frame and it is just as bad or worse than before. I am still trying to get some justice as this is quite annoying and not indicative of a quality built vehicle. This is very disappointing....

Yikes, I wonder if I can ask for a discounted bumper to bumper CPO warranty bc of this or something...

I only paid $1200 for my hpp b2b and thought I did good. Others have paid less if you check threads here.

Hmm at what mileage? I might talk to them about that.

Creaks now (started at 11,000 miles) lead me to believe there may be leaks later.

9500 miles when I bought it.

Unfortunately that is what you are stuck with - because it is a few day process to remove and install the new frame, seal the glass, etc. Some shops have to actually farm it out to an autoglass company.

Some of those who had it replaced still had the issue come back later on. Not worth fixing until they have a TSB for it. Just my 2 cents.

orrrr.... keep having it replaced to get it the attention it needs from HMA?

Mine is on it's 3rd roof and I will likely need to replace it again in the spring.

yep, squeaky wheel gets the grease.

And I want a paper trail of issues and attempted fixes in the event it goes tits up on me.

After a failed attempt to buy a 5-series BMW today (sold online late last night), I decided to take my 2015 5.0 Ultimate to a different dealer to address the sunroof. My failed service visit from a few weeks back has left a very sour taste in my mouth on the brand in general.

I'm hoping I found a dealer and service manager who actually cares. I'm working directly with the service manager at a dealer here in the DFW area who personally just purchased/leased a 2017 G80 (secretly hoping his also starts rattling immediately). I'm hopeful that this will be addressed quickly as he was very willing to walk through "fixes" (found here on this thread) that were not resolutions to the issue. After talking with him on the phone last night for about 20 minutes, and a good 15 minutes at the dealership today, I think we're both on the same page and ultimately expecting a full roof replacement to be the necessary outcome.

The challenge with this entire issue is timing and temp/sun elements. I left my home this morning around 8am when it was roughly 60 degrees, the roof was rattling like crazy whether or I was going 35mph, or 70mph on the interstate. I had meetings from about 11-2pm, and the vehicle was left out in the middle of a parking lot in the sun and temps had increased to 82. After my meetings I had a 30 mile drive to the dealership, not a single rattle. There is definitely a correlation with sun/temps, and something related to expansion and contraction of materials.

Looking back at my dealer visit 3-4 weeks ago, the service tech and service advisor took the vehicle for a diagnostic joyride in the mid-late afternoon 2 days straight after the car had baked in the sun all day and been exposed to 80-90 degree temps. Of course I picked it up the following morning while temps were still in the low 70's and the roof rattles like crazy immediately upon leaving the dealers lot (within 100 feet), continuing for 20-25 minutes.

My expectation with the current dealership is that the service manager and tech take the ride together first thing tomorrow when temps are in the 60's. They should be prepared to hear rattling along the lines of a bundle of "just married" beer cans!

To be continued....

Keep in mind some had there sun roofs replaced and the issue came back.

Certainly a possibility! But lets hypothetically say they put in a new one and it stays quiet for 6 months....then starts rattling. I would put that in the "win" column over listening to the thing rattle nonstop for the next 6 months. Such a small issue can ruin the experience of a vehicle in this category that they're trying to compete in.

In all honestly, I won't own this car 6 months from now. I switch out every 3-6 months....45 cars since 2004.

If they can't get the rattle taken care of it will be gone "tomorrow". I have several buy-bids in hand good for 7 days from yesterday.

Been over a week now and still no car.

They did repossess my 2017 G80 because they sold it. Gave me a 2017 Santa Fe Sport with 165 miles on it.

Saw the car on Monday. It was in pieces.

Got the car back the 15th. Sunroof still making noise. Took the car back on the 17th and it is still at the dealership. They called today and said it is still making noises and that they are going to escalate the issue.

I expect sooner or later they will want their new G80 back. 😂😂😂

I just hope they can get it resolved.

Don't know if this helps. IMHO the problem is the crappy plastic guides in the rails. They are up in the roof of the car where the sun beats down mercilessly, so I'm sure that they quickly degrade.

A while back I opened my sunroof (which had previously never given me a problem). I heard a pop, crack, and a groan and immediately stopped opening it. I then tried to close the sunroof. It would go back to the closed position, but one side stuck up above the roof line.

I took it apart and found that the plastic guide had cracked. The roof closed above the roof line because the peg that guides the glass got out of the track in the plastic guide, thus "jacking up" the glass.

I was able to manually get the peg back into the guide, and then get it to the proper closed position, after which I reassembled the glass.

After checking on the price of a repair, I decided to simply live with a permanently closed sunroof (I disconnected the switch to ensure that I, or someone else, didn't inadvertently try to open it.)

The attached photos are of the plastic guide...full view and up close.

OBTW...I checked the plastic guide on the other side and it had "micro-cracks" in the plastic. It was just a matter of time before that side failed too.

Thanks, but our panoroof design is completely different from yours.

Mine is at shop - per CEO HMA - they ordered parts to rebuild the sun roof. Still in shop. They did give me a G80 loaner w sun/pano and it is completely quiet.....
