Sunroof Rattle

I have not had much in the way of complaints about the sunroof because I treat it like the time bomb that it is, as kn5owa pointed out. But unfortunately, the bad design does not stop there. I lost the glass panel between the windshield and the moving pano panel. Whisky tango foxtrot. Who on earth thought that would work? As an engineer, it offends me deeply. The idea that one could extend the windshield (from an aero perspective) without using at _least_ automobile windshield plate glass is just ludicrous, but I would venture to say that no glass is the only viable solution.

And if you are thinking that I lost mine the same way most Genesis owners lose theirs (not our virginity), but sadly, no. The pebble lost the contest to the sun between it, aero wind load, body flex, temperature changes, and other road debris, to kill the stupid glass panel. I was in my garage, roasting coffee, when I heard what sounded like a pecan dropping on my car in the driveway. As I looked right at where the windshield was, i realized I was watching the entire panel simply disintegrate in the 100 F Texas sun. My wife and my neighbor watched in amazement. It took about 15 minutes and when I drove to the dealer (very slowly), pieces started to flake off. They gave me a brand new loaner, but it's a pickup truck. They said about a week to get the part and install it. I asked the service manager (who is the greatest) if he could make it out of metal and he just laughed.

The US mfr warranty appears to be 5 year, 60k miles. If I were keeping the car, I definitely would make certain that any extended warranty covers the cost of replacement, which I am sure is quite high, since the car is not drivable in any real sense until it is fixed, and requires a rental or personal replacement. It is something that has a limited lifetime where I live, and would require regular replacement. My car is garaged and I enjoy covered parking at work. It didn't matter.

Quick update since the overhead console fix, no squeaks or buzzing/rattling type of noise for 3 days now, car is dead silent inside and have ran over many potholes and rough pavement to confirm this.

There seem to be some iterative improvements in the panel that was replaced to mitigate thermally induced failure. There seems to be a slightly larger gap between it and the sunroof with a larger rubber gasket to make up the space. It also appears to be thicker or at least denser, but I won't be certain of that until some debris hits it or, super unlikely, while stopped at a light, a big drop of water falling on it from an overpass. It used to make a terrible racket when something struck it.

Re: Sunroof Rattle maybe solved??? Update 2

Fellas, looking at this thread makes my head hurt. But anyway I had a slight buzzy metallic type rattle that would occur when driving over rough pavement, lane makers and rumble strips or it even makes the noise on cold mornings, I had thought this was the dreaded pano roof rattle, but it isn't. I tracked it down today after installing sport aluminum pedals and it turns out to be the overhead map light/sunglass holder panel.

I took the switch panel out took it apart and was tapping it and it made the buzzy metallically noise which I thought was the pano roof. After taking it apart and reassembling it and tightening all the screws I took it on a 15mi test drive on rough I90 pavement lane markers and rumble strips which produced no buzzy metallic sound rattle the car is dead silent.

This actually drove me nuts when since I bought the car and I think I finally solved it. If it comes back I can put in some foam deadening material and or line some of the plastic pieces with felt tape to quiet it down.

I urge you go try this, this maybe totally unrelated to the panel roof rattle but my interior right now is dead silent. only thing squeaked during the trip was my burger king cup in the cup holder.

Let me know if this helped for any of you, cause I'm enjoying driving this dead silent coffin right now.

PS there are two led bulbs each in their respective holders I untwisted the side that was rattling, and reseated the bulb as well I think this might be the actual culprit. But some of the screws are pretty loose inside the panel.

Did a 350+ mile trip on i5 from Bellevue to Portland, and since the fix with the over head console the car has been dead silent. There are of course some light squeaks and random buzz on a occasional hard hit over bad pavement, but I am satisfied with what the solution was and the pano roof doesn't appear to make a single sound.

Next up fixing the pano roof weather seal.

UPDATE FULL ROOF REPLACEMENT. The weather stripping along the roof line drivers side has torn twice since the repair was made.

So found another spot that can cause the creaking noise, the glove box. Simple fix to test my theory, I put a clear bumper by the latches and so far it has been creak free.

Dealer has car for torn pano/sunroof track - says there is a new fix out to prevent it - hoping it will also help apparent returning rattle

Got a loaner G80 w/o panoroof, noticed the passenger side seat belt rattles on the side pillar.

I have a 2016 Genesis 3.8 with sun roof I purchased last Fall. I had the rattle too. I took it to dealer this past Monday and as of today ....absolutely no rattle. What they did I don't know but evidently it can be done.

Please find out and post what they did to fix...is it still quiet?

Hi Everyone,

I was looking at the sunroof and noticed the seals on our car seem to be degrading. do you think this contributes to the noise? Are these warranty items?

Yes they are, 60k, 5yr. The 3rd photo shows what appears to be marked UV degradation. The gap will generate considerable wind noise in such an otherwise quiet cabin.

That gasket on the panel between the windshield and the pano roof seems to be better now. My dealer charged HMA 1158 USD to replace the panel on my car. I watched it self-destruct. Despite the fact I live in Houston, my car has not seen any sun since I got it. Go figure.

My 2010 4.6 had rebound sound during slow speeds which lead me to believe something loose in front suspension. Technicians could not duplicate, but no doubt there was problem. While traveling on rural dirt road, encountered serious washboard surface. I thought the whole front end was going to fall off! No one else would have felt otherwise. I let a salesman talk me into a 2015 3.8 AWD. I loved the 4.6 and the gas mph, 21/29. No way 3.8 can achieve close. Great car but not worth the change. Had I known it was a rebound in the sunroof I would never have move to 3.8. The 2015 had a thumping noise in the rear. No way to tell the noise source. Turns out...sunroof. Hyundai replaced entire unit. fired original problem, but a much less frequent and irritating thump continues. I still regret swapping the superior performance of the 4.6. If you want good milage dont't use cruise control. Hyundai has problem with sun roof design.

Car back at dealer for 2nd full roof replacement for sunroof rattle. Some comment by Service Mgr indicates improvements, fixes are slow and gradual but forth coming. This is as predicted about 6 months after 1st full roof replacement.

After the front panel above the windshield shattered and was replaced by the dealer, my sunroof noise has gone away. Not sure if there is a correlation, or just luck, but I am not complaining!

I just came back to visit the thread and I see there doesn't seem to be much new going on. What IS going on is the rattle in my sunroof. One of the two dealers I brought it to finally admitted that: "Noise from the sunroof is coming from the sunroof flexing. This is a normal noise for the vehicle." Of course, whether or not it's normal is an issue that the dealer doesn't get to decide.
I have two questions:
First, it seems as if someone in this thread said that Hyundai had come up with a "fix" for the problem. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there anything they can do aside from replacing the sunroof?
Second, does anyone know if this problem also exists in the 2017 G80? Did they ever change the sunroof design?
Any information greatly appreciated, as always.

Well, I did a little checking after my prior post this morning and found out that 2017 G80's are available WITHOUT sunroofs!!! I've been paying for sunroofs I didn't want in luxury cars for years! It appears I will have to give up driving a 5.0, but the 3.8 gets good reviews. Besides, it looks like the tech benefits of my 5.0 Ultimate are available on all the G80's.

I'm inclined to get my Genesis 5.0 Ultimate ready for sale and get in the market for a 2017 or even a 2018 G80.

really wish hyundai (and all car makers for that matter) would make sunroofs/moonroofs/panoramic roofs a STAND ALONE option! the only way you can get a G80 without the glass roof is to get a base model. i always have issues with head room, and therefore prefer not to have a sunroof.

I wish they would offer a glass roof that doesn't open. All I really want is the extra light coming in. And here in IL the dealer mechanics finally stopped their strike so I can finally get my car in for the roof, moving drivers seat and the flutter.

Aaargh. Rattle/creak from the roof started at 18,000 miles and 18 months on my 2016 3.8 RWD Tech. Happens when the sunroof is closed and disappears when open. Bad timing. I divorced my dealer after getting ripped off at 15K service. So, just gonna suck it up and play the radio loud. Too bad, it's a great car but for that, the scary adaptive cruise and the musty smell from the AC. I'm thinking ES300H next.

Well, after talking to corporate, I am in the process of arbitration with Hyundai. My car was in at the dealer for 4 months, sunroof replaced, and still had the noise. The gentleman that I spoke with prior to filing a complaint with an attorney told me it was a known problem with no fix. He stated that the Hyundai resolution team would contact me in 48 hours. Well, a week later and no call I called them and he said although my car was returned to the dealer for repair within the first 12 months I was over 12,000 miles (12,483 to be exact) and they were not willing to offer a resolution. Once I told him I would contact an attorney e stated that our discussion was over and hung up.

I now have a deposition with their attorney in January and arbitration set for March. My issue is they don;t stand behind a known issue. I even told them if they buy my 2015 back or pay it off I would purchase a G90 without the panoramic roof to avoid the noise. They would rather go to arbitration.

Car is been in the shop over 5 months total of the past 10 months. The last trip the dealer said that their is no fix and even noted so on the repair order. The will no longer attempt to fix until Hyundai informs them of a fix.

This is my 2nd Genesis, my first was a 2013 and I probably would of already purchased the G80 sort or a G90 by now if Hyundai would of addressed my issue satisfactorily, in my opinion. Once you admit it is a known issue it should of been addressed.

I will not be purchasing another Hyundai or Genesis again due to this.

I've not had the rattle, nor do I open the roof. I have to wonder if they can stop the rattle by gluing something in place even if it would not open. That may be acceptable for some of the owners. In summer I even close the shade a few inches to keep the overhead sun out of my eyes.
