  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

12.5 Map Update

So I apologize if this is something that has been answered a million times before. I'm currently shopping around for a used 2015/2016 3.8 Genesis. I want to make sure it has Carplay ability, and I understand that its only available with the 8" screen. Is it only the Ultimate that had the 9.2"? Will I be OK as long as I avoid the Ultimate package?

Yes.

yup just ordered mine

and I think that puts to rest the issue of is it one update a year for 3 years, or free updates for 3 years.

I got 12.5 Dec for free, and I just ordered 13 for free 4 months later.

Or one update per calendar year?

I would say free for three years, that's the way I would read it, but I guess we won't know for sure unless they come out with another update in 2019.

Mcc...you're right. 2018 doesn't count. No one at Genesis knew the rules then and/or they didn't have a rule then. It is now one per year for a total of three.

I also got the free 12.5 update in Dec last year. And 13.0 is available, free as well, once you "bill to GMA." Who knows what the actual limit is.

Very minor updates. But could be some unlisted bug fixes. Why not. Ordered!

This is the rule on the Mapnsoft web site:
All Genesis vehicles and newer receive three years of complimentary map updates for free.

I guess it can be interpreted, but I see no restrictions.

The Genesis web site says they are part of the maintenance. It also states it is to ensure you are up to date. To me, most up to date is having the latest.

Advanced technology includes complimentary map updates to your vehicle’s navigation system for 3 years, to ensure you’re always accessing the most up-to-date mapping. Updates* are available annually as part of your routine maintenance visit.

Ed, Did you see that little asterisk after the word Updates? The footnote goes on to say Multimedia and Navigation Map Care updates are available annually for 2017 and 2018 model year vehicles for 3 years after purchase with a regularly scheduled maintenance appointment.

To me annually means once a year for 2017 and 2018 models.

While I agree, it also states with regularly scheduled maintenance. In the case of the guys here, we are doing the work saving the cost of the tech.

Depends on what the definition of "is" is type of thing. We'll find out next update.

I agree we will only know in time. Ordering it yourself may be the workaround. And you can’t do that for the G90.

What savings? Annual maintenance is free for 2017,18,19 models

Nothing is free. The tech is paid by the dealer and reimbursed by
Genesis. You paid in advance when you bought the car. It takes 30 minutes or so to do the install. When they send me the SD card I take the place of the tech. I swap my time for their cost.

maybe, but as I've heard some say, you are only allowed to get one each one year from your anniversary/purchase date. for me that is June 20, 2018, and I have received 3 within the first 10 months of ownership. I got 2 in 2018.

and it doesn't matter if they "revise" it at this point, the warranty book I have says Map Care: 3 years FREE map updates

not free once a year for 3 years, or whatever.

If they revise(d) it after my purchase, that's fine, it would apply to those that purchased after the revision, those of us that purchrased with the old wording are 'legally' are entitled to 3 years FREE map updates regardless of how many a year come out from the way it was originally written, and I suspect it would hold up in court as well if it was challenged.

"3 years FREE map updates" is not the same as "free once a year for 3 years", or "one free update per calendar year".

personally I have challenged manufacturers twice on warranty wording and won, both times in arbitration, they need to be specific in the wording not ambiguous, and if it is ambiguous then the arbitrator and/or court will find in favor of the customer, not the manufacturer.

I even challenged a former employer on their ambiguous non-disclosure and no right to sue for unpaid wages document and won, forcing them to back pay me over 10 years of overtime..

agreed, the free updates and the free maintenance is built into the price of the vehicle vs. a separate line item, it isn't free it is "pre-paid", "free" is a marketing play on words.

But what I mean is you already paid for them to do the update. No change in cost whether you do it or the dealer does it. In fact with your logic it costs you more if you do because it costs you the value of your time.
