• The Genesis G70 will add a wagon variant, possibly called a shooting brake, when it is refreshed for 2022.
• At the same time, it may lose its manual transmission option in the U.S.
• We don't know if the G70 wagon will come to the U.S., but we hope it will.

These spy photos confirm some good news: the Genesis G70 sports sedan will spawn a wagon variant soon. But that good news is accompanied by a few bits of bad news, too. For one, we cannot assume that this wagon (which Genesis will possibly call a shooting brake) will come to the U.S. market. And Genesis already told our colleagues at Road & Track that the updated 2022 G70 will no longer offer a manual transmission.

Genesis Likely to Launch Wagon Version of G70

Genesis G70 Getting 2.5T Engine to Replace 2.0T
While the G70 wagon in these spy photos is heavily camouflaged, its longroof shape is unmistakeable. We can also see that the G70 will adopt similar styling cues as its recently revealed G80 and GV80 siblings, as we can see new headlight and taillight designs underneath the coverings. In the European market, the G70 shooting brake will compete with wagon versions of the Audi A4, BMW 3-series, and Mercedes C-class; the only wagons in this segment sold in the U.S. are the Audi A4 Allroad and the Volvo V60.

The 2022 G70 will also adopt the updated, more powerful engines found in the G80 and GV80, as we expect its base turbo 2.0-liter inline-four to be replaced by a 2.5-liter unit and the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6 to be supplanted by a 3.5-liter. Unfortunately, this means that the six-speed manual transmission available in the current G70 2.0T will be dropped. Genesis told R&T that it only sold around 100 manual G70s for the 2020 model year. (Admittedly, when we drove the manual G70, we weren't as enamored with it as we usually are with stick-shift sports sedans.)

We look forward to hearing more about the updated 2022 Genesis G70 sometime later this year, although we aren't getting our hopes up that the wagon model will come to the U.S. market. Stay tuned for more information to come.

I just re-read the Car and Driver comparison. It's a shame the Dynamic Edition wasn't made this year, because when you go back and look at the numbers on the skidpad when Car and Driver first tested the G.70, the number .95. The Dynamic Edition Michelin Pilot 4S tires, like the BMW has. The rest of G70 get the Pilot 4, which have a bit higher wear rating, and aren't quite a sticky.

although Im always happy to see nice things about the G70; I wish there was more attention to criticism of the transmission which I believe is the G70s greatest weakness. With how many G70/Stinger owners complain about the 3-2 downshift jerking (especially when trans is cold) theres no way a long term review cant bring that up....I know not everyone is having this issue but no way these press cars can all be exempt; and unless its brought up by a major publication Im afraid it will always be 'expected behavior' when we take it to the dealer

I've read that same article, and from what I can see it's the same Michelin Pilot Sport 4 that the rest of the G70 19" staggered get.

Dynamic has 4S. Design and the rest have the 4.

Had a dynamic edition when they first came out for a day, those tires are stickier than the 4 that comes on the rest of line up. Should’ve just put them on all of them, doubt it costed them much more.

Not that it matters, but the Design Edition comes with 18" all season tires (at least it did in 2019).

That was most likely a Design AWD. RWD came with the 19 10 spoke.

That was my initial impression as well, but by the same token I love my G70 so much I wasn't sure if I was being over-sensitive.

Yup, that's a good point! I think most of us on this forum are objective and realistic though.

I don’t think it’s unfair to say it’s biased. I mean, just from memory one line stuck out to me: about how the bmw is too rough for city roads, but probably great on track and they gave the win to the bmw for that...

At the risk of alienating the home crowd, I can say that there is some truth to the review. I recently drove a new 330i. It is far different than the predecessor 3 series, and it is amazing in nearly every way.

There are individual factors which are a matter of subjective taste. For one, styling is very different, and I know there has been some controversy about the new 3 series‘ styling, both on the exterior and certainly the interior dash. The G70 is more classic in its presentation, and it’s certainly a beautiful car. It will be interesting to see how time treats each of these in the long term.
