Shimmying/Shaking Over 60 MPH

I lease a 2018 Genesis G90 5.0 HTRAC. I love the car. I leased it in July of 2018. I was childhood friends with the salesman and, because we knew each other and had previously discussed it, he knew that I absolutely cannot stand a vehicle that shakes or shimmies on the highway. Major, major issue for me. The day I took possession of the vehicle, he told me that he noticed the car shimmied/shook on the highway, even though it was brand new. It was a "demo" car, which apparently the dealership manager drove, and it had about 4,500 miles on the odometer when I leased it, but it will still deemed new. Anyway, they put a new set of tires on it at 4,500 miles just before I took possession of it.

Fast forward about eight months. It's shaking on the highway once I reach speeds of 60 m.p.h. or more, and it's driving me crazy. I take it back to the dealership, which is 2.5 hours away from where I live, and I'm told my rims are bent, presumably from hitting pot holes. I pay $250 to have a third party rim repair shop re-balance, or straighten out, my bent rims. Afterword, it drives much better. However, just a couple months later, I notice it's shaking again at highway speeds and it's driving me nuts. I take it back to the dealership (five hours of total drive time). I'm told my rear tires are below factory spec and the tread is worn down low, even though they only have 16,000 miles on them. I'm also told that the front two tires are cupped and have unevenly worn due to misalignment. I pay the dealership $607 for two new rear tires, and they cover the cost of the front two tires when I explain to them the history of the problem and the fact that they put four brand new tires on the car only one year ago. Now, it's still shaking above 60 m.p.h. It's not a jarring, crazy shaking, but it's enough to be extremely bothersome and frankly unacceptable for a $75,000 vehicle that carries a monthly payment that's about as much as my house payment.

What do I do now? Has anyone else experienced similar problems? When I had it in the shop this most recent time (earlier this month) I specifically asked if the rims were bent again and I was told no. I was also told that in order to totally fix the problem, I need four new tires. I now have four new tires and an alignment, and I still notice the shaking and it's driving my absolutely bonkers. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks in advance.

Wow, I have this same issue on my 2017 5.0... No one was able to fix it, and the dealer said it was just an allignment issue.. I've added new tires and everything. I'm due to trade it in today and am worried about getting a new 2020 if this problem is happening to others.

However, I finally took it to a local Hyundai dealer that had a corvette specialist running his alignment shop( guy actually builds custom rod car suspensions). Did some driving and trouble shooting and found that the left rear suspension lateral arm had about 1/4" play. Paid $48.68 on line for part and that was it. Solid as even at over 145+mph. This also eliminated a hood vibration at very high speeds.

Do you G80? Or a G90?
 
Neither-2013 5.0, but rear suspension is similar in basic design. Just putting up a point to have qualified suspension person check out when investigating your problem.

Yeah okay thanks. I totally agree with you that the repair for troubleshooting procedures are only as good as the tech performing them.
 
Yes, the dealership finally fixed it. It got kind of ugly. The first thing that happened was they put a new set a tires on it, but it still continued to shake and shimmy. I was absolutely furious. I got in my car, drove it back to the dealership (2.5 hours away), handed the service guy my keys, and told him that I didn’t want to hear from him until the problem was solved. A few days later, they called me to inform me that the most recent set of brand new tires were bad. I have no idea if they were being honest with me or not and it sounded ridiculous. So, they put yet another new set of tires on it and then did a road force balance. After that, the problem was solved.

OK, been through 2 sets of tires, another new set of Michelin tires, still same issue but less, now just got four new rims (at 2.7K) - the problem is worse! I don't know what is next. I have engaged Genesis USA and awaiting next steps. It has got me second guessing myself.

Eeeek! That’s awful. Did you have to pay for the tires and/or rims or was it covered under warranty?

I too have a 2017 ànd it's been doing it from day one and even the loaner g90 5.0 does it too I'm thinking It might be poor bushing design or maybe in adequate shock's

Luckily not. being covered by Genesis and am actively engaged with Genesis USA.
 
Sounds like I need to get the G80 instead.
Frankly speaking I would take a closer look at genesis and the practices and policies cause their doing some crazy stuff ,I leased a g90 and at the end ofy lease paid it of 32000 cash in February and still can't hear anything about my title and theirs quite a few people having the same problem and being told the same exact story

Thats a long time to wait for a title! I feel for ya man.

I have purchased a preowned G90 and I have the same issue. The dealer I bought from put brand new tires of Hankook H426, the worse in any neighborhood of tires for this car , they did 2 alignments and finally I went to Genesis (Hyundai) and they realigned the car BUT... the shimmy or vibration is still there. They said rims and alignment was spot on, the suspension did not show wear @ 35455 miles and that the issue was the new tires. I find a little strange unless the tires are just total trash... But the issue is still confirmed with new tires, SO, tires can't be the culprit or can they! I have my own theory of warped rotors... the next visit check and need to do it soon, warranty repair getting close! ANYWHO... If you have solved your shimmy issue please let me know what you've found out, I would be GRATEFUL! :)

That is unacceptable in any car. The G90 should be smooth right on up to top speed and handle solidly. Especially since you spent quite a bit on the tires and rims fixing.

Is there another dealer closer to you? Warranty work would be covered. If the dealer is unable to find and fix the problem I'd consider spending a few more bucks and having a good shop that does suspension work take a look at it. It may be sloppy work on tire balance or alignment. but it could also be some other problem the dealer is not seeing. If that is the case you may have paid for the diagnosis but warranty should cover it.

There have been other threads here mentioning driveshafts and the like. with AWD that is a possibility also. I'd look for a closer dealer for starters.

I just replied also with the same issue but I have a 2017 2wd model... Any takes, I know you're the best when it comes to responses and some quick solutions I've followed so far on this site. I'm a Ret Dis Vet and frankly like the other gentleman, I'm a little annoyed with the issue!. Thanks and I look forward to hearing your reply. I too have all these same things he had done, 3 times for alignment and road force balance!
 
Well, my last update to this site before I leave. I am done with Genesis Motor America and my local area dealerships Genesis is buying my g90 back as they did not repair the shimmy and there were no comparable cars in the area for an exchange. Even the local dealership didn't want to bring in a trade vehicle because they were afraid I would not accept it either and they would be stuck with it.

So, best of luck to you all and I am returning to a more reputable motor company that actually stands behind their product when a defect exists.

I too have a 2017 g90 with same on going issue , also paid of my car in February 2020 and just now receving my title after a whole lot of running around and a dozen different supervisor and five different noterized letter to take to dmv which dmv said sorry car not released , frankly speaking I think there is a design flaw in bushing
 
Has anyone looked into draft shaft issues? Sounds like the Palisade and the Telluride (while completely different vehicles) are exhibiting some vibration and shimmying issues related to this and a TSB has been issued. The pool may be too small for them to issue a TSB for the g90. In my case, I can feel the vibration as soon as a let off the brake (not during idle), which makes me think that it is not the bushing or tire issue.

Well, my shaking and feeling of motion sickness ( everyone in the vehicle) after long drives in my 2018 5.0 Ultimate delivered new was just diagnosed as a faulty drivetrain and transfer case. It's been at the dealership for 3 weeks now with no ETA for the parts. Will keep members updated because Genesis has escalated my fourth complaint case and promises a speedy resolution. A real shame it took them 2.5 years to diagnose!
