  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV80 Reviews

I like Doug Demuro, mostly because he follows a format so it's easier to cross-compare. You know he's consistent in his approach, and applies a scoring system that isn't perfect, but is uniformly applied.

But he did not give the GV80 very high scores.

DD is about annoying as one gets and some of his categories are just plain stupid.

but he's not "bought" by any brand or pubilcations, and doesn't get favored treatment by any manufacturers.

He also uses a method that I've come to appreciate because it makes cross comparisons to other reviews more accurate. All this car comparison stuff is subjective, but I find his approach more objective than most.

is that just an observation, or is there more to your point?

He doesn't seem to dislike it in the least, and pointed out it's not going to compare well to a Navigator or Escalade, but also doesn't cost as much. He seemed to indicate it was well positioned among it's most closely related peers.

Doug's number scores are based on an "absolute" scale against every car he's ever driven and don't really mean anything other than his at-the-moment whims. Alex on Autos scores cars in relation to how good they are against others in their segment.

I doubt most people who watch Doug's reviews even bother remembering the scores, if they make it that far to the end of his videos.

which is why he shows where it lies next to it's peer group in the spread sheet, and typically makes comments about each review that are relative to peers within the list. Yes, they are absolute, as they are for all cars. Since all cars use the same scale, two equal cars with "low" scores will have a similar score. Compare a car it's peer, not to a perfect score of 100. His scale system doesn't leave room for any car to be a 100, because every car is a combination of many "compromises".

I tend to agree. Doug is “past it,” as the Brits would say. Watching his newest review is usually just like watching the dozens of others that preceded it. He needs to freshen his act. He’s burned out but doesn’t seem to know it yet.

You can judge yourself, here are the scores of some vehicles he reviewed.

His personal rating system blows. Compliments everything yet scores low. Drives it and has zero feedback.

Worst of all...he thinks he speaks cool...but really he sounds annoying as F...essentially like Emo Phillips.

Thanks but no thanks.

The Canadian duo (The Straight Pipes) are the best!!! (no bias)

All of the above and his hand gestures are annoying and distracting.

Neither (presumably) are any of the other YT reviewers, and for that matter, the old school auto publications (despite the accusations over advertising $$).

No Benz or BMW made C/D's 10Best list and they are among 2 of the biggest advertisers.

Neither did Lexus and only 1 Toyota made the list, the Supra (and one could say that isn't really a Toyota, and that BMW should be getting most if the credit), another big spender of advertising $$.

And a good part of his scoring system is nothing but his personal bias - fun factor, cool factor and styling.

He's annoying as hell and is literally the Jay Leno of the YT auto reviewers.

Similar whiny high-pitched voice, chin and as mentioned, the annoying hand gestures.

Appeals to the lowest common denominator, and like Leno, get a sense that he's not very well liked by his colleagues.

Really like TSP guys, but think the other Canadian (ok, one's really a Brit) duo is better - the Throttle House guys (they go into more depth and detail with regard to handling/driving dynamics).

Motortrend seems do not like the GV80 that much.
M/T sure did "rap" the ride. I've watched virtually all the Youtube GV80 reviews and as many print reviews as I can find and I've yet to see the ride described as "atrocious" or even close to that as it is in another M/T review following the posted review entitled "GV80 Pros and Cons" by Edward Loh. Maybe their test vehicle had over-inflated tires. It happens.

Motor Trend also slammed the G80 and called its ride harsh too. Seems more like one or two of their staff have an axe to grind with Genesis, especially in light of a refresh E-Class somehow winning their COTY.

It's pretty telling that they're the only ones on the internet to actually consider the ride too firm, whereas every other reviewer has claimed the G80/GV80 to be soft or even wallowy.
