Long term reliability of HTRAC AWD transfer case due to inability to change the transfer case fluid?

@Acpantera

Q1) Should I jack up the entire front end or just the passenger side when changing the transfer case (TC) fluid?
I don't have car ramps and will use jack stands. My thought is entire front end will need to be jacked up to get as much fluid as possible out of the transfer case.

Q2) Did you have any issue with re-aligning the TC and cross brace/frame during reassembly?
My concern is the TC shifting relative to mounting on the frame and have jack around the TC to get bolts/holes to line up.

I took my 2018 G80 3.3 Sport HTRAC to local Genesis dealer last Friday for
1) Front and rear differential fluid changes.
2) Transfer case fluid change.
3) Propeller shaft TSB 20-DS-002HG
4) Replace A/C thermistor

Had a loaner for the day. Dealer called me at end of day saying none of the work had been done because they couldn't find the Shell TF0870B transfer case fluid. Very disappointing. They are ordering/searching for the parts to do the work above. I expect them to subsequently refuse to do the TC fluid replacement. I've seen online reports there is a dealer bulletin explicitly stating DO NOT change TC fluid.

I'm averse to providing/having them use the Ravenol fluid because it may be a reason to decline a warranty claim if there is a problem with TC in the future. I have no objections to using the Ravenol fluid if I do it myself.

I've looked online for the Shell TF0870B transfer case fluid, but it is as rare as unicorn blood. Found the Genesis branded TC fluid on ebay for $9.89USD / qt sold by a seller of collectibles, ephemera, records, and vintage items. This seemed very sketchy as most of the TC fluid is ~$40->$50USD.

It seems like Redline MT-LV is compatible with Shell TF0870B transfer case fluid. Shell TF0870 fluid is used in many other car makes transfer cases such as BMW and Porsche. Redline cost about $20 a quart.

@carguy75 Thx.
The Redline website indicates MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 gear oil is "recommended" for the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport 3.3T transfer case.
The OEM compatibility page doesn't actually show any Hyundai Genesis or Genesis Gxx's though.

A reseller website indicates the Ravenol Transfer Case Fluid TF-0870 / DTF-1 meets specs for Hyundai Genesis TF 0870B (Used in ??select?? 2017-2021 G70, G80, G90),

The G80 owners manual specifies SHELL TF0870B. It's unclear if there are different types (A, B, C) of TF0870.

Answer to Q1) If i didn't have ramps I would probably jack up the DRIVERSIDE, you want the fluid to be as close to the plug side as possible.
Answer to Q2) I had absolutely no issues getting bolts out or back in....with that said, I used ramps so there was no cassis flex to worry a out. Ravenol is definitely the fluid to use.

@Acpantera
Thx. Definitely jack up both sides. If I only did the driver side I'd never get be able to do the work on the passenger side.

Our girls ride low/have low ground clearance. I have to jack up the front passenger side just to get to the oil filter and oil drain plug. Maybe Santa will bring me a garage lift for Christmas ;)

My guess that is Redline and Revenol TF0870 fluid will work just fine. However, it would be wise to do some more research to ensure that the letter designations are not important.

From my research; TF0870 without the letter designations is a special 75W gear oil used in many different transfer cases. Some automakers list the Shell TF08070 fluid with different letter designations. The letter designations is probably related the special additive blend used by each automaker for their specific transfer case. Aftermarket fluids made by Redline and Revenol usually just has a custom additive blend that covers all units for all makes.

I personally would trust Redline and Revenol TF08070 over just running the old OEM fluid without ever changing it.

Came across this video of a transfer case replacement on a G70. Looks like a chore... and requires GDS to reset the learned clutch characteristics.
Was hoping that there is a way to refill the transfer case by some way...apparently not possible on the G70 as you can hear them commenting.
I wonder how long do they last.

The fill bolt is the large hex head bolt on the side of the case visible at about 8:00 in the video. Standard placement on most transfer cases. However, accessing and placing fluid in the fill hole will be a challenge with the exhaust in place. I assume that a drain bolt is present. Worst case, you may have to suck the old fluid out of the fill hole and then add fluid into it.

No relearn should be needed with a drain and fill.

At first I wished my 5.0 had AWD, now after watching this video I am glad it is RWD. A drain and fill on the transfer-case does seem to be a tough job. Well, the fill portion of the job. Draining seem easy enough if it has an drain plug.

Confirmed. No drain bolt is present on this transfer-case. Dumb design. You will have to drain(suck) fluid out of the fill hole.

Interesting that they have left out the fill and level check instructions from the G70 service manual. It is also looks like a different model. Dumb design indeed.

Post #81 of this thread. Exhaust was a non issue one the g80.
G70 looks more involved, but it's worth it to r&r the fluid, cures the wonky feeling while accelerating.

OK I finally gave in and changed the fluid in the transfer case of the G70.

The car (2019 G70 2.0T) has ~131K kms.
The process is same as @Acpantera mentioned in post #81.
The fluid (Ravenol DTF-1) was ordered from Asianparts as I was unable to find the exact brand of oil (Shell TF-0870B) as mentioned in the manual.
I am still not sure what the suffix 'B' stands for in the recommended Shell transfer case oil. Interestingly, the label on Ravenol bottle says it is suited for the transfer case of Genesis / Stinger 3.3T.

Procedure to replace the fluid is straight forward:

a) Gather all the required tools and the oil.
b) Support the transfer case
c) Remove the transmission cross brace
d) Remove the fill bolt
e) Suck out the fluid (Same contraption as posted in post #81)
f) Refill till overflows and replace the fill bolt.

I was able to remove ~450ml of fluid from the transfer case but was able to put back ~600ml.

The fluid that I removed looked good. Yes it was dark, but there were no particles or burnt smell.

I did a 30km test drive after in both town and highway, no codes or lights came up.

BTW, I did not notice any change in the way the car drove. It was smooth as ever.

Nice work!

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Update:

It's been ~1500kms since the transfer case oil change.
No issues or warning lights. Behaved very well in the snow storm yesterday. The office was surprised that I showed up.

Is there a TL:DR version of this thread?

Will be taking delivery of my new (to me) 2016 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 HTRAC with 69k kms on it. Anything I should do or keep in mind?

FYI. I've been attempting to have the Transfer Case (TC) fluid changed on my Genesis G80 3.3T HTRAC (AWD).
Vehicle is almost at 50K. I'd like to do this to maintain the vehicle and because I'm getting a minor shudder/slip under moderate to hard acceleration.
Initially I was going to do myself, but don't have a good/safe way to jack up/support the vehicle.

My 2 local Genesis Hyundai dealers can't/won't do it. because they can't find the fluid and/or unwilling to change fluid due to Genesis bulletin saying not to change fluid. If transfer case is having issues they replace the TC (WTF!).

I had the front+rear differential fluids changed Dec 2021 at a local garage/noN-dealer. I also asked them to do transfer case fluid. One of the mechanics worked at Hyundai/Genesis previously and was aware of the Genesis TC bulletin. This garage was unwilling to change TC fluid. They didn't want the liability of the TC being damaged due to the fluid change.

I contacted another local garage I trust and they also refused to change the TC fluid for the same reason.

I'll do it for ya. Are you near Buffalo NY?

The fluid that you ordered from Asianparts, was it DTF-1 or TF0870 on the bottle?

It said "DTF-1" on the bottle.
Thanks rmod, Asianparts had the fluid at a decent price $40/L but they are currently out of stock. Everywhere else it's like a $100/L
