  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Wing Emblem Installation Process

You got it exactly right. There are two different size emblems, one for the front and one for the rear. I just replaced the rear one and it fit perfectly into the exsisting alignment holes. Didn't need any more tape either. Job took about 15 min. Thanx for noticing the difference. I'm now going to tackle the front. My only problem is how high up on the hood should the emblem be placed?

It would have helped if KAI sent me the right emblems.

I kind of feel like I'm being held accountable for giving bad info. :(

Oh well, such is the price for being "the first".

I have found KAI to be totally unreliable and disreputable relating to their badge sales. They have denied to me that there are two different badge sizes, indicating that everything is the same size; they have denied having changed their website to add a choice of front or rear badges (a choice that wasn't on the site when I ordered from them), only to eventually admit that they had indeed made that change/addition more than a week after I ordered and complained; they have denied showing two different badges in their photos with no mention that they would not be shipping both badges for one price. All in all, these guys should NOT be considered a trustworthy seller.

Sad to say it was way more difficult than I expected. You must understand, there is a reason I never worked in a body shop.:D Getting the old off was pretty easy, hair dryer and fishing line. [nylon] Tried floss and it was useless, kept breaking. The nylon line went through it like butter and when you get down to the posts it basically just pops off....

The fishing line trick worked GREAT. I even did it while the car was cool and no issues. Had to work the flying H off a little by wobbling it, but it was off inside of 10 minutes from the time I started. I rolled up as much of the leftover sticky stuff by hand and then used some goof off to get the rest off. It worked great, but I was a little overzealous rubbing it off with my microfiber cloth and did leave some very shallow surface scratches (probably from sticky residue remnants). I bought the front/back wing set, so the rear wing lined up perfect in the existing holes and the 3M tape stuck pretty firmly. I'll be breaking out the Dremel or Rotozip to cut the posts off the front and do that later this week.

Hey guys, I just installed the wing emblems (front and rear) and the wheel inserts, and I must say it looks great. The instructions here are awesome. I used my dremel tool to sand down the nubs on the front wing.

I took somebody's advice in this thread about using masking tape to mark the position of the front wing emblem before sticking it, which worked well, the only problem is that I didn't have masking tape, so I used a sticky label instead. Then, the sticky label didn't peel off (some paper got stuck to the front of the car).

To make a long story short, now I have some sticky glue from the sticky label on the front of the car that won't come off very easily, even with a fingernail. What would you recommend to safely remove the sticky glue without hurting the clearcoat? Is acetone safe enough to use, or will that eat the paint away as well?

Thanks!

Definitely do NOT use acetone! Acetone is a powerful solvent that will almost certainly damage your paint - I worked in a paint factory, and that stuff will strip paint off metal in a heartbeat.

I've heard of a product called "Goo gone" that is recommended elsewhere in this forum. I haven't used it myself, but maybe someone else can suggest a safe product...

try a little WD-40. don't try nail polish remover.....

Thanks for the tips. I'll try to find some goo gone or some WD40... I guess acetone will work really well, so well it will eat holes in my paint... lol thanks for the tip sho nuff... I will stay clear of that.

I've purchased both emblems, but I only replaced the tailgate emblem. I did not put on the front emblem on the hood. I don't like how the lack of a notch causes variable placement of the emblem. For example, this one is too low:

edit: Best place to order is right here!

I'm surprised at how much "orange peel" there is in the paint. When I went to the dealership I noticed that certain colors had it worse then others but I did not get to see a black one. For $40K, there should not be orange peel... this pisses me of.

Hmmm...Samifumi brings up a good point. What is proper placement distance (above the grill trim on the hood) for the front wing emblem? I'm sure there is a spec for this in Korea.

Actually, the picture above is exactly where I put my emblem. In fact, that car looks suspiciously like mine... ;) I think where to place a front emblem falls into the category of "in the eye of the beholder."

There is a youtube video from Korea about the Genensis. I looked up the position of the Enblem there.

Given that the Korean hood has holes for it there is a designated position.

Cheers

I just ordered wings for both the front and back of my Genesis. I have been reading through all of the posts and learned a great deal...thanks so much! I did however have a question for all that installed the front wing. I noticed all of you mentioned that you grinded the posts off the front wing and just used the 3-M tape to secure it. Did any of you consider drilling actual holes? I have mounting rear spoilers on two of my SUV's in the past and had to drill holes in the body to do so...call me crazy but I am considering carefully measuring, marking, and drilling actual holes for my front wing. I am fearful that over time the wing will shift without the posts to keep it securely in place...thoughts?::

Welcome aboard and congrats on the new ride. Pics in your album look terrific.:welcome: How to say this nicely....DO NOT DRILL HOLES IN THE CAR! Reasons why:

  • They are not both round. One is, the other is a slot. [obvious when you get the wings]
  • They are not small holes.
  • Someone in your neighborhood has a dremmel tool, if you don't.
  • As a very early adopter, I wound up with front wings on the rear, before they knew there were rear wings. Believe me, they are stuck, and aren't going anywhere on their own.
  • The 3M adhesive is VERY sticky.
  • I suspect there are warranty issues with the drilling approach.
  • One slip...buy a new hood.:(

Please don't drill your new car! It's risky and believe me when I say 3M adhesive foam mounting tape is all you need. If it's good enough to adhere trunk lip spoilers on cars (my previous GS430 included), it's strong enough to hold a tiny emblem. It's good stuff, and it won't "shift" after application.

Good luck! :)

jwaters943 and BaywayRic thanks for the advice and cautions as well. I own a dremmel tool and will just grind the mounting posts off instead of drilling. By the way; I just received my center caps, replacement airbag with the wing emblem, and the front wing...the rear was back-ordered. I will try to get the airbag installed on Monday and load new picks when able...thanks again for your response...

Thanks for the info it took about 10min to remove and replace with the new Winged logo, looks sweet.

Goof off is the key.
