Disappearing Genesis Dealerships

I recall the hubbub years ago when we were going to convert to the metric system in the USA. Whatever happened with that? 🤣
That was when I was in middle school and I am 70 now. But I took up 3D printing a few years back and that is all in metric so I have been using it a lot lately. I tell you what, using 11 mm is sure a heck of a lot easier than using 7/16 " and the likes.

So, when I drink a pint of milk I’m on the metric system? Same with filling up with 10 gallons of gas? Same with buying 14 ounces of Häagen-Dazs? If I buy 2 lbs of cookies at Wegmans is that metric?

When driving my car I can’t exceed 25 miles per hour on my street. I put 35 lbs of air in my tires. I drive 50 miles down the road.

If I drink a cup of coffee am I on the metric system? If I wear size 38 trousers am I metric? If I step on the scale and weigh 185 lbs, is that metric?

Frankly, I can’t think of anything I use daily that is measured in the metric system.

I drank wine out of a 750 ml bottle tonight, used a metric allen wrench to tighten up something on furniture, took a ,05ml dose of medication. I went out today for a couple of hours so I tool a 500ml bottle of water with me. While at the store, picked up a jar of sea salt for my grinder. Got the 500 gram size.

I fine it mostly in tools, as most stuff is imported and they use metric bolts and the such. Also with hobbies that include measurement, as most of our products are imported. I mentioned before 3D printing. It's all in metric, but they do use both metric and standard in some instances.

The thing is, Ed, that nobody in the US refers to metric measurements. If you went into a store and asked for 946 ml of Maple Syrup they would throw you out.

It’s pretty obvious that most commodities are still packaged in the same old way. The fact that they have the metric measurements on the label too is interesting, but nobody pays any attention to it.

The metric system will be real in the US when we adopt kilometers on the highway, liters at the gas pump and cm’s in our pants sizes. Then there’s the scale at the doctor’s office. Until that happens I’m more concerned about why Häagen Dazs reduced its container from 16 oz to 14!!! Maybe they were concerned about my pants size?

Now I’m writing my shopping list.

- Egg Beaters (907 grams)

- Maple Syrup (946 ml)

- Iced Tea (1.89 ltr), but maybe they’ll have a half gallon bottle.

- Spring Water (3.78 ltr), or maybe one gallon if they have it in stock.

Back in the 70s they did put some road signs in kilometers. They were not very popular.
It will take a hundred years before we realize the rest of the world has a simpler way of doing things. Take you shopping list. If you put a 1 quart or 2 quart bottle of soda on it, you won't find any, Cans stick with 12 oz. only because it would be too expensive to convert vending machines to handle the new size.

What about recipes? If you give them to me in metric, my kitchen can handle it as most measuring cups have both gradients and my scale can change at the push of a button.

Come to my work. We buy material by the pound but we price and sell it by the gram. All the machines and tooling are metric. The controls show pressure in Bars and temperature in C, All part weights are in grams and it is easier that trying to figure the difference between 8 and 7/16 ounces and 9 1/4 ounces. 239 vs 262 grams
People will fight change for many decades, but it is slowly happening.

I stock up on Haagen Dazs when it is on sale BOGO at Publix.

I lived in Berlin, Germany for 2 years, so I have great familiarity with kilometers vs. miles. I’ve always liked miles better, though. Of course, 50 kph does feel faster than 31 mph. Same with 100 kph vs. 62 mph.

I don’t drink soda, so I’ll stick with ounces and gallons.

My wife would be shocked to find metric measures in even one of her recipes, but I’ll mention your point to her when she’s in a good mood.

Many products we buy have labels in other languages in addition to English. Thus, I don’t object to seeing metric measurements on the products I buy, as long as they know their place.

By the way, when it comes to water, I only drink the 8 and 12 ounce size bottles.

Yes same in Evansville IN. The dealership I purchased from sold it’s Hyundai dealership and didn’t or couldn’t keep the Genesis dealership which was at the same place. I’m being told I’ll have to drive about a hundred miles for the warranty work. So much for concierge service and free oil changes.
Some here.. Bought a 2023 and found out last month the dealership within a Hyundai dealership suddenly closed. Now I have to drive over 100 miles

SInce our local Genesis dealer grave-up its franchise I have not had a single communication from Genesis. We did take the car for some work at the next closest dealership and the work was completed correctly and as promised. As far as a "luxury" experience goes...nope. Genesis probably does not want low ratings in their surveys so they are being careful who they survey. Like a political survey, you make provisions to ensure the desired result. When our local Hyundai dealership dropped the franchise they downright nasty over the phone when I just wanted an annual inspection...something any licensed facility can perform. A few weeks after then when I wanted the annual inspection on my Veloster they could not be nicer.

I have heard that the Genesis franchises will be required to build a separate store from the Hyundai dealership. Perhaps that is the reason some of the franchises are being dropped. They now have a capital expense facing them.

It is finally coming full circle. Genesis never intended having the number of dealers they have. Original plan was for 100 nation wide. The dealers sued them and created the mess.

Perhaps, but just as likely is that those dealers don’t want to raise their business practices to the level required by corporate. Screw the buyers and when corporate starts to put teeth into their standards, get out fast.

Just found out another Genesis dealer shut down in my area, Genesis of Burleson. My purchasing dealer Genesis of Dallas shut down about a year after I bought my 2020 G70. Next closest dealer was in Burleson but they are now gone. Now, looks like Genesis of Irving is my next closest if I need warranty work done. DFW area still has 5 dealers in the metroplex so not SOL yet, but for sure getting further out from me. Strange nothing in the mid-cites area between Dallas and Ft Worth. Arlington has the Cowboys and World Series champs Texas Rangers, but no freaken Genesis dealership, go figure.

The Cowboys and Ranger probably aren’t their target consumers

True, simply illustrating a town large enough to host two professional sport teams ought to have a Genesis dealership for the population is there. There is an opportunity to fill a void between Dallas and Ft Worth. I hate dealing with traffic when I have to drive to the Dallas side or the Ft Worth side for something. Still don’t see a lot of G70s on my daily drive but the Genesis SUVs are out there.

I don't know Texas geography, but they are opening one in Weatherford Tx. Probably not near you, as Texas is pretty big, but thought I might mention it.

Weatherford is about an hour away from me. There is already a Genesis/Hyundai dealer there today but not a stand alone. I’ve only heard of a new stand alone Genesis coming in Mesquite at some point. My opinion for what it’s worth, the first dealer to get a stand alone in a large area like DFW, if they advertise such will have a big advantage over other dealers who are just Hyundai dealers pretending to be something they are not. Today, most Hyundai dealers do not even have a Genesis sign on the outside of their building in my area. I noticed while looking at the Genesis web site they now say the name of the Hyundai dealer so folks realize they are looking for a Hyundai dealer as they drive by trying to find a Genesis sign.

The 4/23 article referenced above states:

"... Genesis has already opened five standalone facilities, and it plans to open more than 50 dealerships in the coming months."

REALLY? Will that be 6 or 60 months?:LOL:

the article also states "Genesis GV70s come with complimentary service valet and maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first), which means you can arrange for your vehicle to be picked up at your house and serviced at no cost. The service advisor will bring you a loaner vehicle, so you have something to drive while your SUV is being serviced."

I've seen too many reports--including my own experience with my gv60--that this 'complimentary valet and loaner vehicle' promise is not a reality. my closest dealer is a standalone, right next to the existing hyundai dealership, and while the facility is lovely, the service is much more like Hyundai than like the luxury experience I'd come to expect with lexus and Mercedes.

I had to book my valet appointment 2 months in advance. Now the valet option is missing from the app.
