If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Head Unit Problems

I just returned from my "Head Unit" replacement. My XM ID did NOT change. It's my understanding that the XM ID is located in the amp unit, not the head unit as it is in the other Hyundai models. An unexpected item that I observed was that my navigation software is now the latest, "April 2010". I'm thinking that this must have been loaded in the new head unit when it came into the dealership. A bonus to be sure since otherwise I would have had to pay for an upgrade.

Same issue with mine. There would be a loud screech from the speakers, and the the system goe dead. I had the head unit replaced once and it started again within a week. After waiting a month, a new head unit is in, and they are also installing an amplifier in the trunk I hope this works. Ha anyone had an issue with a buzzing fromt the dashboard area? I had this simialr problem with an older car and it was a speedometer isuue. I can't find any help on this???

My brand new 2011 Genesis 4.6 experienced a IS failure this weekend. Symptoms the same as all the others - plugged my iPhone in, sound failed on all sources. Steering wheel controls also failed.

This is the new car that I got from Hyundai as a replacement for the 2009 model that had the exact same problems.

What is an "IS failure"?
Sorry to hear that you're having the same problem with ANOTHER Genesis.
Might as well ask Hyundai to buy back the vehicle all together.
To tell you the truth, I was ready to shop for another car if they bought my car back.
Fortunately, everything seems to work fine for now.
What nav s/w version is yours, btw? Mine is 4/2010

I fat fingered the "D".

The DIS (Driver Information System) failed in this car.

Sorry to hear that you're having the same problem with ANOTHER Genesis.

Imagine my frustration when it happened agai today, and did not re-set when I restarted the car. This time, I took it to the dealer. It's official - exactly the same issue as with the first car, an my 6th amplifier is now on order.

Might as well ask Hyundai to buy back the vehicle all together.

That would actually probably cost me money. They gave me a very good price on this car - it wasn't a real buy-back the first time. On paper, it appears to be a normal new car deal, where I traded the old Genesis for the new one. IF they did a buy-back on this one, they'd (correctly) only be obligated to pay me what I paid for it, minus the mileage deduction. Because they gave me such a discount, it is pobably worth more in trade than I'd get in a buy-back.

I am seriously considering taking the thing to a competing brands dealer and trading out of it. I love the Genesis in principle, but I have a limited amount of patienc with poor quality products.

How do I determine the version? Is it under one of the nave setup menus?

I'm getting my head unit replaced. Bluetooth started acting up.

Aha, I see. :)

I understand how frustrated you are. I'd be PISSED too.

I see. So, they really didn't officially buy it back. They rather gave you a better deal through another vehicle sale.
That makes sense.

It is just ridiculous and almost sad that this car is having so many DIS problems. I don't think I've heard that many mechanical problems. It's the electrical stuff that ruins the ownership experience of this car.

How do I determine the version? Is it under one of the nave setup menus?

Can't think which menu it was off the top of my head, but it had something like map version, or nav system version that's selectable through the sub menu like those of the mp3 formats where you can see the full name of the file.
Yours is an '11, so I'd assume that you already have the latest version.

Either way, not a good news that the latest h/w, s/w revisions are still failing.
Let us know how your fix goes.

Well my unit started acting up last week. 2010 V8 Tech. Went to the dealer and they said they rebooted the system whatever that means but it did not solve the problem. Everything works as advertised until I hit the voice command on the steering wheel. Then it's like it's chugging away trying to figure out what to do until eventually it figures it out. While it is "thinking" nothing works as everything is frozen. It eventually unfreezes, 4-10 mins later and everything is back to normal as long as I do not touch the voice command button or answer a call on Bluetooth. Even shutting down the car leaves it locked up until it finishes what it needs to do. Any suggestions?

2010 V-6 with Tech Pkg. I just started having issues this past week. Hit the "voice" button on the steering wheel and I either get "please wait" followed by the ping, or I get nothing. Radio stops. The controller doesn't work. The "hang up' button does no good. The radio will eventually come back on after 4-5 minutes. Today while I was driving I heard a slight popping noise, kind of like when you turn off a tube TV set, and the screen went blank for a few seconds, and then rebooted with the Genesis logo. This happened twice. Has anyone else had this happen with the screeen? Called the dealership and they said it was probably a problem caused by an incompatible phone. I told them that was ridiculous as it happens even when my phone was powered off. I did expereience the "please wait" issue several months ago when my XM subscription expired, and like a few folks on the forum, it seemed to correct itself after a few days. That was several month ago. I take the car in on Thursday. I hope I am not in for the drawn out saga that others have experienced with this issue.

I posted just before you on my issues. Very similar but no popping noise. Dealer said thee was definitely something wrong but needed to ask the big guns. In the mean time I went on vacation for 2 weeks only to come back to a working system. after a few days it went back to it's antics for a day and now it seems to be fine again. Really sounds like a poor connection somewhere. Regardless, my dealer never got back to me and I have a feeling this is going to be eternal.

XM started an unwanted free trial, and again as soon as it ended this week, my DIS problems are back. Lets see how much time it takes for this problem to go away on its own. My Hyundai dealer has never been able to duplicate the problem.

I just started having the head unit issue (2010 tech, 3.8, only 3K). Turn on the car, turn on AV, no sound. Turn off AV and turn it back on, it works great. cannot believe it. I figured they would have solved this issue by now for the 2010 models.

Hyundai should really look into this issue and sort it out for once and for all. It doens't seem economical for Hyundai when folks are going on their 6th amp and may or may not have success.

I guess, this is what sets the boundaries for a real luxury car. I have had maximas all my life and they go all out with their BOSE. Never had a single issue !!!. I guess the saying what you pay is what you get is turning out to be true.

I have the exact same issue. I told the service rep that this is clearly a firmware issue and asked them if they have a new version they can flash on my head unit (I'm a firmware engineer by the way). He said there isn't a new version available and they will have to replace my head unit with a new one. The problem is that new units are backordered and not available until probably next year.

FYI,

Mine has also been acting up ESPECIALLY since the XM trial ended at the beginning of December.
I'm absolutley convinced that all this is related to XM.

My car is at the dealer and my service guy is working with a head office team to find why the system is bogging down like that.

I told my service guy that if they can't find the problem that they need to give me XM free and told him I'm convinced I'll never have the problem again.

I let them know that I've had XM for 15 months and NEVER ever had a problem.
It's been acting up since I canceled XM.

I'll keep you posted

I decided to keep XM going partially because of reading some of these postings, and I have havn't had any head unit problems since I purchased my Genesis over a year ago.

It would be interesting to find out how many forum members that have tech package have NOT had head unit problems after letting XM expire.

Count me in for not having any issues after the expiration of XM:) It expired a year and a half ago (I've owned the car for 2 years come next month.)

Update,

Going to pick up my car without a solution.
I told the SM that I'm very pleased and appreciate everything they are doing...He said it's his mission to get this working properly.
I have no problem with that.

The SM said they did lots of tests with my car.
It's the first tests (of this magnitude) they've done here in Canada.

There's now a team involved from head office (Including engineers) and up to Korea.
The diagnostics they have done have now gone to Korea and he's awaiting for an answer from them.

At the end of the day, he said that when pressing the voice command button, the signal doesn't reach it's destination (Head Unit).
He knows very well regarding the XM thing and they are looking at that too.
He said they mentioned something about magnetic interference with the unit that maybe the XM cancels out. (Something to that nature).
Too high tech for me...

Again...I'll keep you all posted when I get more info.

That is the most eye-opening "you've got to be kidding" thing I've read yet on the Genesis. "Compensating interference?" Wow! If there really is some sort of "benevolent interference" then whatever requires that interference to work properly is clearly poorly designed. The word "interference" implies a non-benevolent, disturbing, un-helpful action!

Given the network based architecture of the system, when any one box fails it's easy to imagine how/why the others have communications issues. And with no XM contract, the XM portion of the amplifier apparently throws a software based snit and "goes stupid" to borrow a term from a (late) pilot friend, forgetting to pass non-XM based network traffic through to the other boxes. Other folks have reported that, when XM subscriptions expire, their voice command stuff "locks up" as reported in this thread; taking many minutes to come out of it. This "lock up" persists for weeks or months, then it magically corrects and voice functions work properly... until XM gets into their holiday mood and gives free short-term trial subscriptions to everybody... which re-screws all those Genesis owners again once the trial is over.

At least you've managed to get your service folks and Hyundai to take it more seriously. That's better than any other reports I've seen - other than dealers trying the "replace the head unit" and/or "replace the amp" over and over or "load the software DVDs again" techniques.

It could very well mean they are interfering at the digital level. These devices are usually interconnected via a shared bus. There could be a bug in the XM subsystem firmware that causes issues on the bus when XM service is cancelled.

They are ordering a new head unit for me. Should be in stock in a few days. Hope that cures the problem.
