Head Unit Problems

Lost all sound from my 2011 4.6 tonight. Was in the middle of a phone call when I had shut car off (transfered to handset). Came back about 15 minutes later and started car and had no sound. Shut car off and restarted twice; no sound. Drove car home 15 miles. Restarted twice at home with no sound still.

Everything else (except no sound) seemed to be working except the voice command button on the steering wheel would not do anything. It was as if this was somehow locked. As I had the tilt module replaced a month ago, this made me think that something had loosened/shorted in the steering wheel during service. May have just been a coincedence??

Let the car sit for about 20 minutes at home and restarted it. Sound now working. Will see how things go tomorrow.

Getting hesitant on my answer to "how do you like your Genesis?".

To fix the voice command issue, all you need to do is a hard reset of all the systems involved. The easiest way to do this is by unplugging the battery and keep it unplugged for few minutes to ensure all the capacitors are drained.

I just encountered the problem this week - car is used, so I don't know if XM was used previously, or not. After voice command and "please wait", I get the control lock up with no sound on radio/cd.

Has the battery disconnect been verified, or do I have to get the amp replaced?

Fingers crossed - hate putting the car in the shop (even if it's the first time for this car)!

My issue was the same. Once it locked only the volume could be changed. The steering wheel control and center knob were non-functioning.
I pulled the two fuses as noted above and now it works again.

Please note to the last two poster's: be care careful about complaining too loudly about your issues. There are some members here that take great offense as if they forget you are simply complaining about YOUR OWN CAR. :-D

Thanks for your post.
Believe it or not, I simply pulled two 10 amp fuses for the audio system (one on either side of the dash) and it works again.
Knock on wood!!
I am shocked though after reading this entire thread because my issue was identical to the other posters. Those guys had amps and head units replaced and it was really this simple?? WOW!

Looking at the owner's manual - there's an Audio 2 (15 amp) and an Audio 3 (10 amp) on the driver's side. Then there's an Audio 1 (10 amp) on the passenger side - but also an Amp-1 and Amp-2 (40 amp, 30 amp). Would have thought with all the amp replacements mentioned, it would be pulling the amp fuses to reset.

So, you just pulled Audio 3 and Audio 1 fuses (I guess for 1-2 minutes) for the fix? And you no longer get a "please wait" response from the voice command button?

Quite surprising considering there's well over $10K worth of equipment replaced on this thread, and Hyundai hasn't found this simple solution! Someone deserves a finder's fee.

I had my head unit replaced twice two months ago and that did not solve the problem.

Now, Every time my car gets into this condition, I unplugged the battery for few minutes and problem solved.

Pulled the two 10 amp fuses one on driver and passenger side - no go, debunked. After first voice command, unit locked up.

OK, - where the heck is the battery??? I see where to hook up jumper cables, and it has 5 (10 ga?) wire connections to this block (passenger side front engine compartment), but... How do you disconnect the battery? Again - after disconnecting, do you get a voice command response "Please Wait" and it doesn't lock up?

I see the battery in the trunk. Now, is it worth trying the disconnect, or ...???

I didn't even look in the owner's manual. I simply looked under the cover of the two fuse panels and they are simply referenced as AUDIO. Both were 10A fuses. My car is an '09 V8 with Tech. Package so not sure if its different than yours.
Let us know if the battery terminal trick works.
Thanks.

This seems to have worked for me - haven't been able to issue a voice command without loosing audio until a ignition re-start. As to how long this fix will last, time will tell.

I'd be interested to see if others with this problem that seems to point to the amp unit locking up audio play, more than one voice command, and anything but top level menus are cured just by disconnecting the battery.

This problem is very intermittant and while Torre (with all due respect) thinks fooling with the fuses fixed his car, it is very likely that the problem has temporarily went away and it is just coincidental that it is working again after he worked on the fuses.

More than likely, it began working again just like they all seem to do after sitting awhile.

I had two 2009 Gennys. The first one was plaqued with the sound problems. As many here can attest, other problem occured as well and these "other" problems caused the mechanics to chase these as well, and the "other" problems changed with each malfunction. It wasted a lot of time too.

For instance, the first time it malfunctioned (Oct 2008) happened after a rain. No sound, no voice command, no warning chimes from the parking assist, no steering wheel button response. Now I had complained that they had drilled all these unnecessary holes in the front bumper when putting on a front dealer tag...hmmm, 10 holes in the bumper, rain, no warning noise from parking assist...did that cause an electiical problem? They decided no, but found some loose wiring in the steering column, fixed that, radio worked and they think problem solved. By the way, the fuses were the first thing they suspected-wasn't it.

Problem reoccurs. Minor differences...this time DIS knob is useless and no numbers appear on the AM/FM screen (as far as tuning a station). This causes them to try to chase down problems with the DIS knob. Other times it had some weird message on the screen. The only common thing was the sound never worked, the other issues changed constantly with each malfunction.

They would work on it, and since the problem came and went, they would think they fixed it and call me to come get the car. One time they called me saying it was fixed and I drove over there only to leave because when they were getting the car out of the shop, it stopped working again.

If you're still reading-I always had a loaner to drive, but I only owned the car a month and they had it three weeks and I refused to take it back. They switched me out of that Genny into an identical one...within four days, same problem.

They had changed the head unit out on the first Genny for a brand new one and it didn't work. This time they sent a new head unit and a new amp. The head unit was installed, but not the amp. I was told that the amp looked different from the original equipment and they thought it was a mistake so didn't install it. When the sound went out again, the dealership was told to put in that amp and the car never malfunctioned again as long as I had it.

And by the way, I always had XM, so it wasn't that.

The dealer always tried to work with me, was just as frustrated as I was, and they went to bat for me when it came to the car change out.

One more thing for Torre...if I am reading you right, you don't like the air coming into your car and press recirculate to stop it? If that's what you meant, the fresh air is a safety issue. Recirculate mode is not meant to be on all the time. The car (and every car) vents fresh air into the cabin usually through the two outer vents by the windows. Riding with recirculate on lessens fresh air in the cabin and will make you sleepy. Just point the offending vents away. I would imagine that is why the cars default mode is fresh air mode.

My system froze up for an hour one day and when I reported it, my dealer said we should put in a new head unit because something must be wrong. they have tried to put in replacement head units and nothing works. Meanwhile, my old one which was working when I brought it in, was sent back. They have had my car for nine days and cannot seem to get any replacement to work. This is awful. Has anyone had a similar experience

I referred you to this thread when I read your identical thread...didn't realize you posted here as well.

No offense my friend, but it seems sort of silly that you asked has anyone had a similiar problem when this thread has 10 pages of them. I'd suggest you get to reading...heck, my post is right above your post and it spells out exactly the same scenerio and what fixed my car. Hint-it wasn't the head unit.

What dealership are you using to repair your car?

well guys I have a 2010 v8 w/tech & 7000 miles ...I had the car at dealer waiting for 3 weeks for them to get new head unit !!! they gave me a loaner , but after going back so many times to try and fix it ..it never works right ! I gave up. ALL THE STUFF GOES ON AND OFF ,sometimes it works and sometimes it don't. I sent a email to them and still waiting for a fix but I won't let my car sit there and drive the loaners... THE SYSTEM IS JUST CRAP AND MY DEALER CAN'T FIX IT. So I drive the car the way it is and happy not to waist any more time on the electronics that they don't know how to fix !!!I HAVE A HEADSET WITH A WIRE FOR THE PHONE AND BATTERY POWER SPEAKERS FOR MY IPOD WHEN THE SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK !!!!!!!

Are Jerome and Ikeym the same person?;)

Well, add me to the list of people that have had audio/head unit problems with the car. Just yesterday my 2011 V6 had audio issues when I started it up to head home from work. I experienced:

- No sound from any source.
- Pushing the power button would indicate "AV off" but would never turn the system back on.
- The voice control button on the steering wheel didn't work.
- The mode button on the steering wheel didn't work.
- I could use the control knob to switch modes without issue.
- Hands free didn't work.

Strange thing was when I placed a phone call to Hyundai (had to use the phone itself because hands free wasn't working), the mode button on the steering wheel started working again. However, as soon as I ended the call, the mode button stopped working again. Plus, the system finally came back to life only after I let the car sit (not running) for about an hour.

This is terribly frustrating, and this issue, combined with the faulty electronic steering wheel adjustment, has me feeling like I have given Hyundai too much credit for being able to build a luxury vehicle. I will be visiting the dealership next week to get both issues looked at, but I can already hear it now: there's nothing wrong with the car.

First issue with the 2013 R-Spec- this has now happened twice - while driving and listening to the radio massive interference begins - assuming I've just driven through an area with poor reception I change radio channels - same interference - switch to XM - no luck - in fact every mode has the same interference except the ipod and jukebox. Even the Bluetooth audio has it. Thinking perhaps the phone is causing interference it's turned off - problem persists. Turn off car - still there. Only when the car has been left off and parked for an undetermined amount of time does the problem disappear. I guess I have no choice but to go to the dealer - but I'll have to wait until the problem is actually happening or they will be skeptical.

It may be electrical interference just through the speakers or amp. I would start with checking the amp after it is hot. I have seen this before with sound amps, after they are warmed up a short occurs.

Thanks - honestly since I've only owned the car for about 2 weeks I'm not sure where the Amp is even located - and what exactly should I be looking for? Or are you suggesting that I share that sugggestion w/ the Dealer - thanks again for your reply.

And now that the car has been off for 2 hours the problem is gone. I may have to video tape (with my phone) the issue next time it happens as the dealer will not be able to re-create it eaisly/quickly. Not what I needed from a brand new car..ugh...

sorry, I sould have stated share with dealer, its under warranty.

ifonline ...I agree. Hyundai should acknowledge and correct this issue. I love about 82.493 % of the car :) but this thing with the audio (mostly) and the steering wheel (somewhat) is just crap. If I'm not mistaken this area has already taken a hit from Consuemr Reports (under the electrical and reliable areas of reader evalutations) and us forum user surely aren't the only ones experiencing this issue. I read hear that there's a software fix available. Some, however, complain that the fix is a comprimise that brings some problems with the cure. In my case if I want the software applied (my car is a 2012 year model) then the mechanic has to make a special request since the fix only applies to the pre '12 year model.
