If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Head Unit Problems

Thank you all for your postings, they have been much more informative than what my dealer has been able to tell me, even after having the car for twelve days.

Same issue as many of you: system locks up (or says 'please wait') when hitting the steering wheel voice command button.

Currently they are saying that it could be an issue with my iPhone, the number of apps on it, and the number of contacts I have on my iPhone. I told them it cannot be my phone, as it works perfectly well in the loaner Sonata, and that it worked perfectly well before I let XM expire.

They are waiting for the Hyundai district manager's arrival tomorrow to show him the issue, so that he can approve a warranty replacement of the head unit, $4K. But according to many of you, that will not fix the problem.

FYI,

Mine has also been acting up ESPECIALLY since the XM trial ended at the beginning of December.
I'm absolutley convinced that all this is related to XM.

My car is at the dealer and my service guy is working with a head office team to find why the system is bogging down like that.

I told my service guy that if they can't find the problem that they need to give me XM free and told him I'm convinced I'll never have the problem again.

I let them know that I've had XM for 15 months and NEVER ever had a problem.
It's been acting up since I canceled XM.

I'll keep you posted

Ditto with me, this was due to the end of trial on December 1. I finally had the 'bright' idea of calling XM, and telling them never to send a free trial to my Radio ID again. So i am opted out now. I made sure i told them this was a Genesis issue. Maybe all of us should swamp XM with opt outs and tell them the same.

Just a quick update on my situation...

They ordered a new head unit and will replace my head unit next week.
Will keep you posted.

I told'em they were wasting their time and am sure it will not fix the problem.
(I'm so convinced it's XM related)
He said head office told him to swap the head unit. Maybe they are trying something with my car...I don't know, I'm just guessing at this point.

If it does it again...I'm going to subscribe to XM but from the dealership and if it works great, I am expecting them to pay for it.

Regards,

I re-subscribed to XM today. Voice command button works 100% of the time so far. Will discuss with the dealer on Monday.

My dealer tried telling me it was my phone as well, but I deleted the phone pairing, and it still had the same issues. I had the same issues when my XM subscription ran out, but then it corrected itself after a few days, and didn't start acting up again until 4 months later. I am almost tempted to resubscribe to XM before the new head unit is installed to see if that corrects the problem.

Here's info as I see it.
The XM ID is held in the Amplifier Unit in the Genesis. In the Sonata the ID is held in the Head Unit. My dealer was not aware of this so it leads to misdiagnosis of the problem.
In the unit software (there are threads on here that discuss how to access the software) there is a software setting that turns XM ON or OFF. I believe that when the trial subscription to XM runs out, AND this setting is not changed from ON to OFF, the software continues to look for an XM signal. I believe this could be the cause of some of the problems.
That being said, I had the same problems as many of you, and I have always had XM service, so I don't believe that XM causes all the problems. I had my Head Unit replaced (keeping the original XM ID) and so far everything is working fine.
My conclusion is that there are some bad Head Units and also some software caused problems.

The new head unit came in today, and the dealer installed it. They said everything worked properly. While parked at the dealership everything did work for me, but as soon as I started driving away, same old problem. I would get the "Please Wait" message, and everything would freeze up. Took it right back to the service bay and they saw that it was acting up again. While I was there I went ahead and resubscribed to XM Radio (I had let it expire several months ago). As soon as it was activated, everything started working properly. Have driven about 75 miles since, and have tried the system numerous times and it worked each and every time as it should. You would think Hyundai would look into this "fix" rather than having dealers replace head units!!! The dealer said they were going to call Hyundai to let them know that my system started working once XM was activated. I think Hyundai should work out a deal with XM to provide coverage free of charge. If this "fix" continues to work, it would save them a ton of money.

Another update for me...

Last week Hyundai Canada decided to swap my Head Unit.
Told the tech guy they were wasting their time and money...
Immediately after changing the unit...on my way home, pressed the voice act. button...it said "Please wait"...I knew right away...no sound till I got home...20 minutes later.

Called the tech to let him know that nothing's changed.
He really wants to fix this!

Today They subscribed my Head Unit to XM for a 1week test...Immediately once the activation kicked in, EVERYTHING was working normally again. (NO please wait anymore when pressing the VA button) I then drove to the dealer to let them know that my unit is now working flawlessly and for the tech to try it out!

It is CRYSTAL clear that when the XM is canceled, you "MAY" run into this problem. The good thing for me is that I now have a new HU with all the updates...so now I can Random play my IPOD Classic!

He will let Hyundai Canada know and will get back to me with info.

Again...I will keep you informed on the outcome.

Regards,

Another update...

With XM sub'd, I've had no problems whatsoever....but....
Hyundai will be changing my amp regardless.
I was told that the new amp has 2 chips inside vs. 1 chip on my unit.
Please don't ask further cause I don't know.

They say it should fix the problem.
Was told by the Service Manager that if the new amp does NOT fix my problem, I will have XM free till they find the solution.

Will let you know how it goes...

Well it's about time a dealership works on this to finally come up with a real solution. As you know, I had the same issues a while back which were a pita needless to say. Magically when I had left my car sit in the garage after a 2 week vacation, it has worked flawlessly ever since. Don't ask me how, just does. This was last Nov 22 and not a glimpse of any trouble so far. Sorta wish I could go to your dealer and get the newer head unit but it works fine.

Have a 4.6 V-8 with 7,000 miles on it. Had it about three months. Coming back from Charleston yesterday and the nav system locked up. Did a search on the system and it showed no satellite reception. Pulled over and turned the car off and on...nothing. Then tried to change stations on the XM and no luck. About 60 miles later and it just came back on. Will bring it into dealer today, mostly to document the problem.

Final update...

Yesterday, Hyundai pulled the plug on my 1 week free XM trial. As soon as I lost XM, the VA starting acting up again...Pressed the VA button...car said "Please wait", waiting till chime and said cancel. Had no sound till I restarted the car after seeing my customer (about 1/2 hour later)
This morning on my way to Hyundai VA was still not working, always get the "Please wait"....

Anyways...Today, Hyundai replaced my amp with a new one.
Was told this new amp has 2 chips vs 1 on the old one. It's not supposed to interfere with XM.

Pickup car and on my way home played with VA all the way till I made it home...It worked Flawlessly.
Also the response of the unit is ALOT quicker now.
Music returns alot sooner. This unit must be faster.

So far every time I have brought my car into Hyundai they've always washed it inside and out. What great Service!!!

Good luck all and take care...

Does anyone know if Hyundai issued a TSB on this issue (XM and VA)? Hyundai is telling my dealer they don't know what the problem is, they haven't done any work on my car related to this issue yet. They are still investigating.

I don't think this issue is XM related.

Early last week, my dealer replaced my Head Unit with a brand new one and it did not solve the Voice Command problem. My SM wanted to get to the bottom of the problem and asked me to bring in my car again to do more testing.

After half day or so without any luck with the testing, they decided to grab a brand new Genesis Tech from the lot that did not exhibit any issues with the DIS system, parked it next to my car and started swapping parts one by one.

At one point the problem on my car went away. Then, the technician tried to reproduce the issue on the other car using all the parts he removed from my car but, the other car never exhibited any problems.

Then, the technician decided to swap all the parts back to my car and surprisingly, he never got my car to exhibit the issue again.

Dealer's Conclusion: One of the harness that connects these multiple components wasn't making a proper contact and it was the root cause of this issue.

They don't know for sure which one it was but, when manually reconnecting all the components, the connector started making proper contact.

Also, it could have been a loose fuse on the panel or the whole system just needed a hard reset like, what you get when disconnecting the battery for several minutes and allowing all the leftover power inside capacitors to get fully drained.

I have been testing my car for about a week and so far so good.

My '09 just started doing the exact same thing as reported in this thread. Everything is fine until I press the VOICE button. The car hasn't had XM in a year so I know thats not the issue.
I have 47,000 miles on this car and have an appnt. with the dealer next Tues.
I'll let everyone know what they say.
BTW, the Genesis is the 2nd biggest disapointment I have ever had with a car out of over 25 cars.
That's what I get for buying a car based on magazine reviews.
I should have gone with my gut. It's a Hyundai!

Bro. Other folks have accused you of being a troll, but I don't think you are. I do think that in order to be taken seriously you'd do well to dedicate more characters to spelling out your specific issues instead of alternating between general statements such as that you're going to focus on the good stuff and that the car is a huge disappointment. For specifics, I believe you've provided the below -- Am I missing anything?

Although it pulls to the left. After much reading I see that is “normal” for the Genesis.

there is no way to truly turn “off” the climate system. So wherever the last setting was it will continue to blow (due to open vents I assume) at the last temperature setting

I finally got to use the wipers in the rain and was shocked to discover no intermittent setting! What?! Really?! OMG Hyundai, get with the 70’s. It seems they replaced it with the automatic setting, which is of no use to me because its far too sensitive.

So after 47K miles you have these plus the voice command bug. Regarding the pull, I don't recall if you ever mentioned if you made sure your tires were properly balanced and aligned, but others here have evidently had good success with these checks.

But this is the list that causes the car to be the second most disappointing you've driven out of 25+? Really?!? This is either *ridiculous* exaggeration or you've been some combination of the luckiest and wealthiest among drivers I've ever heard of. Out of curiosity, what were the first and third most disappointing?

You've put 45,000 miles on it in less than 2 months? On March 11 you wrote this:

As the O.P., I am glad to see this thread get so much attention.
Well I have had my car for four weeks as of today and already put 2,000 miles on it and on my 5th tank of fuel. My attitude towards the car is now what I set it out to be and that is to focus on what I like and not what I don’t like. What I like is the style and the way it drives. I am impressed with the fuel efficiency for a car with a powerful V8. I’m getting right at 26 mpg on the highway and about 22 mpg for my typical 50/50 driving. I still have to say though that other than the sound quality of the Lexicon system, I am still baffled by how poorly the “center stack” operates. A couple of additional shockers raised their head over the past four weeks. For one, there is no way to truly turn “off” the climate system. So wherever the last setting was it will continue to blow (due to open vents I assume) at the last temperature setting. While that is annoying, it pales in comparison to the windshield wipers. I finally got to use the wipers in the rain and was shocked to discover no intermittent setting! What?! Really?! OMG Hyundai, get with the 70’s. It seems they replaced it with the automatic setting, which is of no use to me because its far too sensitive. So I am left with the 1950’s version of wiper use, which is to manually reach up and do a single swipe every single time I want them to wipe. Urg!! There are also many other bothersome things but I suspect future models will get better. Hyundai is still new to this market and this level of feedback.

So which is it? Troll, making things up as you go along? Or you bought a used '09 with 45,000 miles on it?
Or, I admit, I may be misreading your posts?

Bought the car Feb. 11th with 41,000 miles on it. It now has 47,570. I drive a lot. The pull is still there but not alway and I live with it since its tolerable. I discovered that if you press the recirc. button each time you start the car (even) if the system is off then you won't vent air. I ignorantly thought it would stay in the last place you left it. I admit my fault.
I have been (mostly) enjoying the car except for minor things that are not really the fault of the car (just annoying). A ding magnet for some reason and I have already had to use the back seat insted of the trunk do to non'folding rear seats.
But this new thing may seriously cost me from what I am learning about it.
If I have to pay out of pocket to fix the issue with the head unit it will easily launch this vehical to the no. 1 worst car I've owned (all things considered of course).
The worst car I've ever owned was a '90 Honda Accord. Bought it brand new and within 6,000 miles the transmission went out and the stereo went out. It was in the shop almost as often as I had it. I remember driving it for 2 months with just a hole in the dash bord since they had to send the stero out to be repaired. But since all of that was paid for 100%, I think the Genesis with easily overtake it if I have to shell out big bucks.

It's funny how so many posts hear are as upset sounding as mine but only mine seam to get the comments. Hmmm

To fix the voice command issue, all you need to do is a hard reset of all the systems involved. The easiest way to do this is by unplugging the battery and keep it unplugged for few minutes to ensure all the capacitors are drained.

Thanks for your post.
Believe it or not, I simply pulled two 10 amp fuses for the audio system (one on either side of the dash) and it works again.
Knock on wood!!
I am shocked though after reading this entire thread because my issue was identical to the other posters. Those guys had amps and head units replaced and it was really this simple?? WOW!
