I suppose this is a rant more than anything, but I'd just like to say that the rebate offered to those who already own a vehicle that competes with the Genesis is deterring me from purchasing it.

I purchased a Ford Fusion 4 years ago right after I graduated college as I couldn't afford a luxury vehicle at that point in time.

Since then I've tripled my salary and am in a position where I'd like to buy a nicer vehicle. I love the Genesis and am okay with the fact that it is a Hyundai. However, the fact that they will give somebody a $1,500 a rebate who is driving a Lexus but not me, may be enough of a reason to persuade me to buy a Lexus.

Basically Hyundai is telling me to go ahead and buy a Lexus tomorrow and then in 4 years they may deem me worthy of a rebate. Until then, don't bother.

I get what they were trying to do with this rebate, but it is very frustrating for me.

Add to that the fact that the dealership here advertised a price which included a $1,500 rebate for that and another $1,500 for people in the military...the price they wanted tonight was $3,000 higher than advertised.

I like the car but this seriously has me PO'ed.

Edit: The dealership is also trying to add $3k to the price for pinstripes, scratch guards on the doors and fenders, and ONE free oil change...what a joke.

Actually no, the dealer pissed you off, not Hyundai.

Check around... don't give up too soon... you'll find a better deal somewhere else.

The dealership certainly played a role in it but they said this rebate was through Hyundai and they have no control over it...is that not the case?

The fact that there are special rebate offers for current Hyundai owners, military, or owners of competitive cars, is the doing of Hyundai Motor America. The fact that the dealer used those rebates in an advertised price, even though not everyone is eligible, is the fault of the dealer (the lousy scum-bags).

I thought competitive rebate was for everyone but hyundai and kia owners?

I was about to purchase R-Spec on Monday as well but last minute I was informed rebate that was available in october when they quoted me was no longer available in November. So I did not purchase it.

Also something odd to me with Genesis (especially R-Spec) was apparently you have to buy these with summer tires even in winter. For someone who will be driving these jn the snow just after purchase is not acceptable.

You should check the Hyundai website for rebates. I believe that some rebates may vary by sales region.

You have to understand that reviewers of R-Spec will evaluate the car based on the OEM rubber, so given the intended market for the car, Hyundai wants the best possible track performance out of the tires. Personally, I would not even consider a RWD car in places where it snows a lot (unless I had multiple cars and could park it in bad weather), but even if I did, I would use snow-tires in the winter.

That is why they should have winter tire package option. On really bad days I would drive my wife's car but from others feedback on this forum Genesis with winter tires would be ok for most days.

Not sure why they vary these rebates. It's almost like the quote is only good for that month. What if you got the quote last day of the month. It's a today only deal! I even had a buyer lined up for my TL and everything... Since TL is in great condition I don't mind keeping it until AWD option is available if I have to.

what are you guys talking about???
i just checked the hyundaiusa website:
the competitive owner rebate is still available for the genesis:

$1500 competitive rebate - applies to any car besides hyundai/kia. yes, your Ford will qualify!

$500 military
$400 recent college grad

$1500 loyalty rebate - applies to current hyundai owner. cannot be combined with competitive rebate.

Regardless of who is responsible, it makes me feel slighted. Hyundai is basically encouraging me to purchase a competitor car in this class, are they not? Just because I don't own a vehicle in that class currently doesn't mean that I am not capable of buying a competitor's car now.

Rebates are offered if they think it will help sell cars. If they think people will buy the car (or any product) without a rebate, they will not offer it. This is basic micro-economics.

First rule of buying a car is to never listen to anything a car salesperson tells you. Nothing. Only things that are in writing are enforceable, and when it comes to buying a car, they know all the tricks, and will often (not always) try and fool you.

When it comes to rebates offered by Hyundai, do your homework and look them up on the website before talking to the salesperson (do all your other research on the web also). If one is too lazy to do the necessary homework before you talk to a salesperson, you will get screwed (just like you get screwed in school when you don't do your homework).

I certainly sympathize with your situation. I suspect the explanation is that the Genesis is clearly at least $10,000 less expensive than comparable models form other well-known luxury brands, and most buyers will easily see that. But they have a harder time getting people (who may be older and are more prestige-oriented) to switch from a well-known luxury brand to Hyundai (based on market research they do) than buyers who are new to the luxury market.

No, it is not fair. Life is not fair. If you complain to Hyundai Motor America and tell them you will not buy without the competitive rebate (if still being offered), maybe they will give it to you.

I got the competitive rebate when I bought my R-spec, and I drove a Honda Element. About as far from "competitive" as you can get. I think the rebate is pretty flexible as far as what is "competitive." In fact, there were several dealers that I negotiated with that told me they would include the rebate. It just depends on your dealer. They filled out the form for the rebate with Honda Element written clearly on it to submit to corporate. Find a dealer that actually wants to sell cars, not play games. I avoid dealers that do any of that pinstriping, "Teflon coating", "paint protection" B.S. They tend to be shadier to deal with anyway.

It sounds like the dealer was trying to take you for a ride. I got the competitive rebate when I bought my genesis about 3 weeks ago. The car I told them about was a 2006 chevy impala, which, is not exactly in the same class. Also, did they mention the $1000 rebate if you finance?

I know that there are games played in the car business, but it seems like the dealer you went to was a bit more... slippery.

Apparently $1000 rebate on finance is no longer available in November. That is what killed my deal even though they included it in the quote they gave me in October. Had they still had that I would be a new owner of R-Spec trying to buy rims and winter tires about now. :( I didn't sense any trickery or gamesmanship from the sales guy. It would be silly for him to do that and loose a sale at the last minute if it wasn't so.

I was referreing to the original poster who was not offered the $1500 competitor rebate for a 4 year old Ford Fusion. That was the dealer that also was trying to gouge on pinstriping.

My dealership gave me the loyalty and competitive rebates when I got my r-spec.

And the competitive rebate was because I owned a Camaro. Even though the Camaro I own is a '79 z28 :)

Sounds like you need a better dealer.

I don't think they were supposed to combine the two rebates. I think you lucked out on this.

Does anybody know where I can find a list of vehicles that are eligible for the competitive rebate? I'd like to see conclusively whether or not I should be offered the rebate.

Fortunately there are a plethora of Hyundai dealerships in the Baltimore/DC area so there are others I can go to and try.

Thanks!

I qulified for the competitive rebate and the car I own is a Honda S2000! :D I bought a 3.8 sedan with premium pkg.

I financed but got a promo rate of .9% for 48 months instead of any rebate as a result of financing. I don't even know if I had a choice.

i guess you're not reading my post.
again, any car will qualify you.
ask to speak to the manager or finance guy at the dealership.
my dealer, as well as everyone on this forum, got any car to qualify.
i asked my dealer which of my cars, a honda accord or audi Q5 SUV, would qualify, and he said either one.
