Is synthetic oil the recommended oil for the 2012 3.8 6 cylinder? My driving distance is about 800 miles per month so what is the recommended interval for changing oil?? Any comments or suggestions?

I just did the first oil change on my 4.6 but my ramps kept slipping on the garage floor, so I couldn't get access to the filter. I'll probably come back to it this weekend. Is there anything wrong with changing the oil but not changing the filter right away?
