In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. 2009 vs. 2010 Genesis Sedan 4.6L question

Thanks for everyone's info. I just drove an A6 as well and now I'm torn between this Genesis and the A6. There's a $10k difference but I sure did love that A6. Going to be a long weekend!

I agree about the A6. My better half loves Audis and I was thoroughly impressed when we test drove the A6.
Also drove the A4, but wasn't too impressed with it. No back seat space = no good for a family sedan.

FYI, if you see on ebay, there's a dealer in Kansas advertising the V8/tech for $38,905
So there's your $400 right there. Plus it's an advertised price, meaning there's still room for negotiation, IMO.

I think asking $38k for a V8 fully loaded is a reasonable offer.

Happy car-shopping! :)

Dan

You know where you stand price wise now.... I would offer $35K (or maybe $34,500) firm for a 2009 and if they don't bite and you really want a 2010 then do the costco thing... $4000 is a decent amount of money to be saved. If financing you might not look at it this way.
If he "really want a 2010" why would he make an offer on a 2009? What happens if they accept his offer on a 2009?

Most people are very emotional about car purchases, and just about the worst thing that can happen (far worse than paying too much) is to buy something you don't really want or will not be happy with.

Do yourself the favor and dish out the little more for the 2010. The changes are noteworthy. Seems like I read about another thing every other day. The adaptive cruise is amazing not to mention upgraded engine, suspension, navigation software, transmission programing, yada, yada, yada.

I'm holding out for the 2011, for even more goodies.:D

Maybe I didn't come acorss correctly in my short response. I was assuming because there really isn't much of a difference between the '09/10 that if he could get a sweet ass deal on the 2009 he would take it. If he couldn't get a sweet ass deal, then he could move on to the 2010 and negotiate from there.

Basically walk into the dealer and tell them you'll pay $34,500 firm. No bullshit; here's the cash. If they don't do that then move on...

Thats actually how I purchase all my cars.... It only took me one try when I bought my girlfriends Kia Sportage. I was paying cash though so maybe that makes a difference, not sure. I bought my Genesis that way as well, but that was with a private party. Theres nothing wrong with a little hardball... I'll even walk right upstairs to the managers door and knock on it. I don't give a shit what the protocol is...

In the Minneapolis area, there is no negotiation for Hyundai - Everyone gets the same price. This seems to be the trend. I like this. Saves everyone time and trouble and builds some trust.

I used to negotiate my cars. I flew to N.J. last time and drove the car to Minneapolis when our 2 Lexus Dealers (owned by the same guy) would not 'deal'.

I enjoy reading everyone's thoughts.....after even more consideration, I feel compelled to give the BMW 5 Series a shot while I'm at it. I hate that I may be moving away from the Genesis but I need to survey the field. I loved the giddy-up of the Genesis but I'm feeling swayed by the BMW/Audi class. Sounds like a may be chasing the brand vs. using my brain. I'll figure it out eventually.....

But then what will you do when the 2012 comes out with even more goodies. :D

We buy a car every 4 years. We have 2 cars. A 2003 Lexus ES300 and a 2007 Lexus GS350.

Next one up is a 2011. That's the plan and we're sticking to it.

We won't hold it against you if you go with another brand.....

Let us know what you decide on and make sure to take the Genesis for 1 more ride before you make your decision!!!! Using your head these days seems to be the trend!:p

One last question on the 4.6. It is only offered in RWD so I'm a bit concerned about the Minneapolis winters without AWD. The sales guy tried to put my fears at ease because of the way the car is weighted (50/50) and the traction system. He's paid to convince me RWD isn't an issue in the winter, but I'd like to hear folks' opinions here. Am I right to be concerned about no AWD option?

Its all personal preference. I live in Mass so we get the same kind of weather you get. You guys might have 1 or 2 extra weeks of winter than us. Most luxury cars come with rear wheel drive like the 7 or S series.

You will most likely purchase a set of winter tires and possibly rims for the winter months. Thats what I did along with most of the people here on this forum that live in "winter states". It adds piece of mind.... If you drive with the conditions given you won't have a problem. If you love bajaing it when 6" of snow on the ground you might want an AWD.

The V6 is close to 50/50 but the V8 is more than 250 lbs heavier, mostly in the front end, so V8 is not 50/50, but I don't remember the exact numbers.

As already mentioned, most people who live in areas where it snows fairly usually install snow tires in the winter or have another car to drive on days with bad weather. Personally, I would get a FWD or AWD car if I lived in MN since I need one car I can drive all the time, and don't like the hassle of snow tires. Fortunately, it doesn't snow much where I live, and even when it does I can work from home on those days.

Does anyone know the production date(s) of these changes to the suspension?

The suspention changed on 04-08-09

Plus, 50/50 means more in a smaller lighter car - any Genesis still has ~1700 pounds over the rear wheels. In a smaller fwd car with 70% of its weight over the front wheels, you'd tell a difference easier.

The key is snow tires - there's no point in having weight without traction and only a snow tire will provide that. AWD is meaningless if the wheels don't grip - you may be more able to slide your way around with awd or fwd, but get a set of steel rims/ factory 17s with snow tires for the winter and you will be amazed at the difference in traction.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I'm getting a bit gun shy on this car now without the AWD option. I'm not a big fan of snow tires so I may look in a different direction....perhaps the CTS AWD or the Audi A6 with Quattro.

Really torn about this.....that 4.6 test drive really rocked.....

I live in Minneapolis and am used to snow. You do have to know how to drive in it with RWD.

I currently have AWD, but there are a lot of folks on the road in the winter that just plain don't know how to drive. Most are going far to fast for conditions, and if they run into you it doesn't matter whether you have RWD or AWD. Your car is still smashed.

If fact most of the vehicles that I see in the ditch in the Winter are 4 wheel drive Pickup trucks and SUVs. These guys get going OK with their traction, but it doesn't help them stop when they need to.

I hear you, Cut-Throat. I have two kids under 5 years old so I think it may be wiser to err on the side of 'safety first' with AWD though.

Certainly realize there are a lot of clowns on the road when it snows.....it is truly amazing how dumb people drive in this town!

A fwd or rwd with snow/ice tires is far better than a awd on summer tires and most all seasons. Only area where an awd excels is traction for take off. Shear adherence is tires, not traction system. Once up to speed or when braking, awd does nothing for better stopping or keeping you on the road. I have had several awd, they are awesome to say the least but useless if you don't have the correct tires for the application. I suggest you get the appropriate tires no mater what you decide on. It's not like it costs any more you know. Your summer tires will now last twice as long since they are only used half of the year. Many people in my area thought the same as you but after counting and studying the accidents in winter, they realised the vast majority at fault had all seasons or were simply to cheap and still had summer tires on. They implemented a law now (here in Quebec, Canada) which makes it mandatory to have winters on all fours. Fines and insurance penalty if you are not following the law. I kinda like it knowing the other guy is not running around with summer tires in a winter storm. ;)

That may be true, but many people do not want to mess with snow tires in the winter, including myself (luckily, I no longer live where it snows a lot, so the Genesis is fine for me). If that is the case, FWD or AWD is advisable, since the vast majority of people who live where it snows can get by without snow tires with FWD or AWD, assuming they get decent all-weather tires.

There are some exceptions, such as the rear engine, RWD Porsche cars.
