2015 Genesis 3.8 vs 5.0

Hi folks,

I test drove both 3.8 and 5.0 base models recently and found that 5.0 is much more powerful in the sense that there is instantaneous power when I press the gas. However, I noticed a second or two lag in 3.8's response.

I have driven sonatas and azeras in the past (mostly rental) and the biggest issue I had with them was the same lag in engine response. Though I did not drive a comparable 311 hp car from Infiniti, Lexus etc., I would like to know if this is something specific to Hyundai or that lag is observed in all comparable cars of that displacement? I did not notice a substantial difference between my 140 hp corolla and 311 hp Genesis.

I test drove a 2015 Lexus GS 350 before I bought the Genesis and it did not have that lag, especially in sport and sport + mode. The Infiniti g37 I test drive was a manual so that comparison is N/A.

Thanks for your comments. It is this acceleration lag that is what is making me from pulling the trigger.

I've often wondered about this.... why because mine has no lag never has. The response of the 8 speed, kick down and over all demeanor has always been consistently quick. Drove a few during my original purchasing phase including V8s and rear wheel drives. Maybe it's just me but I never noticed that being an issue though my 2011 Genesis would on rare occasions exhibit it.

Any smooth press of the pedal results in no lag. Early on when stomping the gas pedal a lag did occur once or twice, however after almost a year it no longer has any lag. Might still be learning your driving habits?

Buy the V8. You'll be very happy with it.

Some people here say you don't need the V8. That's true. Technically, you don't need a lot of things you have, but they make life nicer.

Also, the people who say you don't need a V8 don't own one and never have. Its hard to take them seriously when you know they have no basis for comparison. I've owned and driven lots of 6 cyl cars. We also have a Lexus with a 6 cyl engine. The Genny with the 8 is the way to go, if you can afford it.

It wouldn't have been the realistic purchase for what i would be using the car for. It would've been like using a sledgehammer to kill a fly. Sure it's nice to have the power, but wasn't necessary for me.

I grew up with V8's and I unequivocally love the Genny V8 - acceleration is smooth with no flat spots, hesitation, etc. whatsoever. And the mileage is phenomenal.

And in No. VA where the drivers can only be described as spastic, the big engine really helps to get away from, or around, dangerous spots.

+1, I'm in S. Cal too and even the v6 power is not usable 90%+ of the time. It is a bit sad really, back in the day I had z28 camaros with 350 V8s, lots of fun and could use them far more. The town I live in has grown 7-8x since those days and traffic with it.

I'm a bit surprised as well at the throttle hesitation comments, have not noticed any hesitation with my G2 V6. I had a 2013 Lexus GS350 before this and the Genesis throttle is actually slightly MORE responsive than the Lexus!

Really,? sounds like a lot of drywall work lol. Either way it's a sweet ride v6 or v8. If I could I would totally supercharge the v8 and give the liberal green police a big middle finger...I prefere warmer Temps anyways, bring it al gore.

I had a previous gen with the v6. I had no complaints about that engine but I wanted the v8 when I purchased the g2 and have very happy with my decision to go that route. Powaaa!

v8 handles a lot heavier on the corners then the v6. To me i wanted the handling over the extra power/MPG

Can you tell us what you mean by "heavier". My V8 with continuous damping has very little body roll or braking squat.

I drove the V6 several times before buying the V8 and really didn't notice the V6 handling any better.

A lot of the weight difference isn't as a result of the motor but in the bigger wheels and tires and increased electronics. IIRC the motor accounts for less than 200 lbs of the weight difference.

If there is any lag, it is the transmission and not the engine. Sometimes the transmission gets better over time due to the electronic shifting being more accustomed to ones driving habits. Also, it is not unusual for some cars to accelerate faster if the gas pedal is depressed slower, rather than faster.

I second that one, expecially now that fuel prices are affordable. The v8 is the one you want but I understand if you live in snow belt and need AWD then you really don't have a choice(IN STATES).

I second that choice also - have had mine since Feb. of 2015. You get the power that you expect together with quietness and no bumps or flat spots in acceleration + good mileage.

By the way - it will do 0-60 in 5 secs. as per the many reviews - may have to put it in sport mode - I don't remember for sure if that's necessary - but it's so quiet you hardly notice the acceleration. And, it can be very handy in a tight situation sometimes.

That's kinda what I was talking about - the car weighs in at about 4600 lbs., but tap the accelerator and "bingo" 0-60 mph in five seconds - I kid you not.
