  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I would like to make the rear sunshade on my Genesis to go up whenever the car is put into park or shut off and go down at other times. Anyone have an idea on how to do that?

The sunshade currently automatically goes down when you shift into reverse. I would like to figure out how to change that (or add another option) so it goes down except when the car is in park or off. I think what I need is to figure out where the park sense wire is and use that as a trigger for the sunshade rather than the reverse wire. I could figure this out easily with a shop wiring manual, but it is very hard without one.

I'd bet money that the shade motor is controlled by the computer, this it's trigger is logic controlled rather than by a hardwired reverse wire.

I'm not trying to be flippant, but I think your expectations here are unrealistic.

I now have access to the shop manual. It is trigger wire to make the shade move. I see how the shade works, with one key exception: the shade goes down in reverse and I am not sure how the BCM knows the vehicle is in reverse. That is missing from the wiring diagram.

I am still working on a solution. I have ideas, but I don't have a solution yet.

I just worked a little more on this. I would love to figure out how the reverse signal tells the shade to go down, but, so far I am clueless.

I have been able to make the shade go up and down by manually grounding the trigger wire. This is equivalent to pushing the switch. Now I need to develop a small circuit that grounds the trigger wire briefly when the car changes state. I could use the state change of the vehicle turning on and off or I could use the state change of in and out of park. I think the on/off state will be easier.

The drawback for this solution is that it could get out of sync (tell the shade to go down instead of up, for example). Pushing the shade button will correct that. So, this is a good solution, but not a perfect solution.

I have used a similar circuit in another car to keep the interior lights on for 30 seconds after shutting the car off.

From your description it sure sounds like a momentary contact to ground will cause movement. Almost did the same for my previous Gen 1 for the nag screen circuit as it functioned the same way but I figured way too many issues could arise as most of these functions nowadays are read by puter and have other consequences.

Food for thought. If it was as simple as grounding momentarily, why does it not go up when you shift into reverse when it's down? If you do need to re-sync it half the time, what's the point?

I am expecting to just allow the shade to operate automatically, so I think the resync will be very occasional.

I am not sure how the reverse trigger works. I have not found it in the online shop manual.

Since all i am doing is automatically pressing the button that could be pressed manually, this should project should work properly.

So the easy solution is to splice into the manual button wire and install a micro limit switch on the switch mechanism under the console just before final park position which is connected to ground.

When shifted to park the shifter will brush the limit and lower the screen. Then shifted out of park the limit will raise the screen. When shifted to reverse from park (depending on the built in logic) it may be fine or it may raise the screen, you tell us. ;)

For the life of me I am still trying to figure out why you want the screen to go up and down through the park function.

I live in Texas. Having the sunshade up when the vehicle is parked helps a lot with the sun load on the interior. Tinting helps, but the shade helps when parked. I don't want to have to remember to put it up and down every time I park outside. it also reduces issues with interior fade.

I thought this might be useful... There is a pretty cool project on Kickstarter right now that allows you to intercept and tinker with CANBus signals. Here is the link to CANBus Triple.

Success!!!

The sunshade will now change when the car is shifted out of park (it normally would be up at this time after the car is started). It will change again when the car is shut off (normally go up). The automatic functioning can be disabled by a switch.

The only drawback to my implementation is that it doesn't take into account the current sunshade position. So, if it gets out of sync, I have to push the sunshade button to put it back in sync.

I used a 528T pulse timer to do the equivalent of pushing the sunshade switch.

I don't have any problem with mine being up while driving, in fact I like it, but can you describe a little more about what you did? I assume that you've disconnected the standard inputs from the gear selector in order to accomplish this. Also, does your override switch return original functionality or does it only allow manual control with the button?

I used a 528T pulse timer that does the equivalent of pushing the sunshade button when you shift out of park and when you shut off the car. It in essence pushes the button for a few seconds and then releases it. The manual operation of the sunshade works the same as it did originally.

To do this, I tapped into the sunshade trigger on the BCM. The switch grounds the trigger, so I did the same thin with the pulse timer.

I added an on off switch in case I want to disable the automatic function.

Congrats!!! Proud of your determination!!
