If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Here is the rundown:

2012 Genesis R-Spec 7000 miles, purchased new approx $41,000.

My only two hangups: A) NO AWD OPTION WTF and B) NO V8 RUMBLE, ALSO WTF (on the R-spec, really? it should sound like something)...

So I purchased the MSA secondary cat delete. This did absoloutly NOTHING and actually caused a strange exhaust leak noise under full throttle. Dont waste your money!

After Summit Racing failed to deliver my $1000 Borla order, I decided to go with Magnaflows 4.6L cat-back system #16497 an modify the rear tips to fit the 2012 model. Product cost $600 + $150 install (required welding at the tip). I must say the exterior sound is almost perfect, however the interior drone is excessive. I wanted to hear the V8 while driving, not feel like I was sitting inside a sub-woofer!

I will attempt to remedy this at a custom performance shop tmrw or return the vehicle to stock. Just wanted to share my experience, in case you are considering any of these mods.

It doesn't sound like a V8 sound like a rice burner.

I'm pretty sure borla or magnaflow won't get my money....I will go ahead and get some headers built with custom exhaust

I had put a prototype magnaflow system on a Pontiac G8 I had that had the varriable valve timming like the Genney does. Same issue on that car with a really bad drone at about 1500 RPM while crusing.

I'm starting to think that a conventional exhaust like most are building is not going to work on a engine with VVT. It may be possible that the VVT causes the frequencey of the exhaust note to change as the VVT changes which will make it hard to build a low restriction exhaust like a Magnaflow or Borla or even flowmaster, that depend on noise cancling to acheive their sound and low flow restrictions.

Even with the stock exhaust system put back on my G8, I could faintly hear the drone that I heard with the magnaflow system. I didn't hear it before because I didn't know about it. It will be interesting to see what will or will not develop in the future with a VVT engine and exhaust.

I completlely understand your point of view Crusty. I really like the decibels of the MagnaFlow (It's not too loud) and the tone, but there is drone. It works great for me as the Genesis is my weekend warrior mostly. There have been times were my parents have been in my car going out to dinner with myself and the wife and I wish I could have shut up the drone at low speeds around city where I am constantly braking, then re-accelerating. On the highway it's perfect. THAT is the point where I probably would go with the DynoMax VT's that have the valve to control the drone. Some say it doesn't fit the Genesis, I say "I'm part of the make it fit program."

Why mess with a good thing. If you wanted the Gwnesisto sound like a muscle car, maybe you should have bought a Mustang GT.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Every high performance car website has a series of threads that start and end like this from the same user:

1st thread:
New to the _____ forums, loving the car, but can't hear the engine. What's the gnarliest, bad ass exhaust out there?

2nd thread:

For those of you who bot the ____ exhaust, do you have a drone on highway at about 2-3k rpm? It's driving me ape $hit.

3rd Thread:
FS - Barely used _____ exhaust. 1 month old. $500 bucks OBO.

4th thread:
Bump, gotta move this thing. willing to negotiate + free shipping.

Spot on!

Guess i was the moron that lived with the drone for 3 years... lesson learned

This video much more accurately depicts the Magnaflow sound [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-hKToDbMvo&feature=related"]2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Exhaust - YouTube[/ame]

I emailed Magnaflow a review of this system installed on my rspec. Here is the response.

Tom,

We are currently working on a kit for the R-Spec. With you putting the kit for the 4.6L on your R-spec we wouldn't know how it is going to sound, since the kit wasn't built for that car. With any after market exhaust there will be drone as you are opening up exhaust flow. It shouldn't be severe though when installed on the right vehicle. Our engineers do take into account drone when creating a kit and they will design it accordingly making the drone a tolerable level, if necessary. We have had several requests for this R-spec exhaust and have been working on it for a few months now, so it shouldn't be any longer than a couple months at most, till a release.

Personally I do like the way a tuned Audi S8 or AMG V8 sounds. The Magnaflow does sound mean in person, I'll attempt a second video with a better camera.

If you'd like to purchase this "slightly" used system off me I will be accepting offers. As stated above I cut the tips, which could be welded back on and paid $600.

I actually contacted a local performance shop and they quoted me $1500 for a custom job.

Let's talk about exhaust drone. It is a huge problem with just about any after market exhaust system. It occurs at low rpm light acceleration.
I bought the Magnaflow for my 2011 4.6, and deleted the Magnaflow "X" pipe for a Magnaflow "X" muffler. It still droned - a lot.
In my research I found only two mfgs. who are able to address exhaust drone, and they are not Magnafow or Borla.
Corsa addresses the problem with noise cancelling technology. Their systems, according to my conversations with Corsa engineers, are designed only for specific vehicles. They do not make an application for the Genesis, and have no plans to do so.
The other source is Dynomax which has an "active" muffler in their VT muffler line. These mufflers "work". I mounted them as the rearmost mufflers on my Magnaflow on my 2011. It is not a "bolt-on". It takes some creative exhaust work; and I have access to an exhaust expert in my town. With the VT mufflers the drone is almost completely gone. I have since sold the 2011 to an old friend (I'm a geezer), who loves the system.
I have not tried to mount the Dynmax VTs on my RSpec. It will also be a custom job. The nice thing about the Dynomax VT mufflers is cost - less than $100 each.

OP...

did the shop suggest trying something like adding a Vibrant Performance Ultra Quiet series resonator to the exhaust system?

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Vibrant-1142-Ultra-Quiet-Resonator/dp/B001806YE2"]Vibrant 1142 3" Ultra Quiet Resonator : Amazon.com : Automotive[/ame]

the 2.25" did a great job on my MF exhaust system in nearly dialing out all cabin based drone and removing the slight hint of rasp i had outside my '10 accord coupe at certain rpms. I was about to give up..just go back to stock, but a forum suggestion from a friend who had success with his e46 m5 led me to giving it a try.

Quick update:

I was instructed to wait approx 1000 miles before changing anything. Apparently the some systems take up-to 1000 miles to "break in".

Well, I'm not sure if I hit that mark... but the drone has settled down significantly, the muffler sounds much cleaner from the outside. I will attempt a new vid soon.

Oh, and there was an annoying rasp / crackling noise in the first video - that is also gone
