  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

6MT Owners - Discussion Thread

I just posted this in the other thread about purchasing a 2.0T Sport:

I've owned my 2.0T Sport G70 for a couple weeks now and completed the engine break-in period. I test drove the 3.3T version first which I thought was a rocket but noticeably heavy in feel. The 2.0T RWD Sport felt so much lighter on its feet that I was willing to give up the extra power (and a sunroof and spare tire) for a more fun car with 6MT. My other car is a '99 Miata, and I really wanted a lighter 4-door sports sedan (two small kids) also with a manual transmission. My only initial issues with the 2.0T G70 were an engine stumble on acceleration and the gas pedal input/sensitivity lag/delay, both of which I read about in reviews but I have now addressed:

1. This car really needs premium, higher-octane gas. Yes, it can take regular 87 octane but I have noticed a significant improvement in engine response, smoothness, and gas mileage after using 93 octane for several tanks. It really smooths out any hesitation/stumble and my mileage has improved by several MPG (from about 21 MPG to 25 MPG average - both city and highway driving combined). Yes, it is more expensive but with the increased MPG really not that much more expensive when you do the math.

2. I purchased and installed the BMS Pedal
tuner. This simple (less than 5 minutes) and easily-reversible mod greatly improved the pedal sensitivity and response. Before I was not really happy with the car's throttle response and sometimes had difficulty smoothly shifting because of it. Now that issue is resolved with the pedal tuner and this car is much more fun (and easier) to shift and drive. Before I couldn't even properly blip the throttle quickly to downshift, but now upshifts and downshifts are how they should be. I contemplated getting the JB4 tune but with the pedal tuner and in Sport mode I am more than happy with the car's performance.

So yes, out of the box the 6MT has some issues which have been mentioned in various reviews I have read and watched. But with better gas and an adjustment to the throttle response, this car really comes to life.

I've installed the BMS Pedal Tuner and it actually helps with the dip in the first and second gear. So the dip is not mechanical, it's in the software. Genesis is cutting power when you go from first gear and second. This is so weird.

I agree, it seems to be related to clutch position. It cuts power at the exact same clutch position every time, just at the top of the throw. You can tell it's software and not lag because it does it at any RPM or load. There are ways to drive around it to be smooth, and being in sport mode helps, but it is always there. I wish I had a boost gauge, you should be able to see boost drop just as the clutch is let out.

I recall reading somewhere in one of the initial automotive reviews that Genesis had purposefully 'slowed' the car between shifts to make the ride smoother with greater emphasis on luxury ride. If you think about it, the car on paper should do better in the acceleration numbers. In essence, they had 'detuned' it, which if true seems counter intuitive to the whole idea that this was an offering to enthusiasts. All this said, still love it!

i wonder if the ECU update TSB deals with this issue. i'll be getting mine done in September with the annual maintenance.

He didn't get his facts right unless the US 6MT Sport doesn't come with the black Sport Interior and lacks the Sport Exhaust which adds 3hp more.

^ correct - the US market does not get the true Sport appearance package as does the CAD trim. this goes for the interior and exterior bits. it's why US 6MT gets the 10-spoke alloys since they don't have the dark chrome (but many people prefer the 10-spoke rims). they also don't get the pano sunroof.

as for the sport exhaust, US gets it, but ~half the articles i've read get the hp rating incorrect.

Sorry...should I remove it?

^ haha.

that review is certainly full of praise. as much as i enjoy the 6MT trim, and i have disagreed with certain critiques as being subjective when it comes to clutch/gearbox feel, he's a bit overzealous...but the bottom line is it's a sweet car that is a unicorn in today's market. this guy clearly loved it, others not so much. it's probably somewhere in the middle which is fine by me.

curious what their opinion is after they drive the 3.3T.

So after using the pedal tuner for a couple of days, I’ve found I prefer keeping the car in Comfort mode with the pedal tuner on the Amber setting. Seems to operate more like a naturally aspirated engine with an actual throttle cable, whereas in Sport mode I get too much of a sudden power surge when the turbo kicks in after a second or more on the throttle. Comfort also seems to make first to second gear transitions smoother than when in Sport mode. Any other users have a preferred setting?

So do folks who have the manual recommend after driving it for a while? Seems like online reviews mostly say to stay away from it...

If you want it, there is no other choice. No sitting on the fence on this one. Some folks are trying to figure out how to make the shifting feel better!

Honestly I don't get it. I owned a Subaru and they are notorious for their 'glass' transmissions, I also have an old Acura TSX that is being replaced by the Genesis (giving it to my daughter). The TSX shifter is the same as the S2000 and it is a marvel of engineering. I would rate the Genesis in the middle, not the greatest nor the worst I've ever driven. I think too many reviewers wanted a more sporty feel to the transmission (shorter throws and lower engagement point), but Genesis opted for a smoother feeling unit to keep in line with the luxury theme of the car. Drive the car. Once I tested the car I knew it was good enough for me and the reviews were being too picky. Of course you could also go to another brand and choose a... oh wait!

I agree that compared to my Miata’s shifter or a manual Honda, the shifter in this car is just average. That’s not saying it is bad; it just doesn’t have the quick short mechanical throws that my Miata has.

For me the shifter is still fun; it’s the stock engine response, especially between first and second gears, that really needs to be improved. There does feel to be a power limiter in first gear, and I think that is why the 0-60 times seem to be so much slower with this version. I’ve noticed an improvement with higher octane gas and the pedal tuner I installed definitely helps the throttle feel immensely. But don’t get me wrong, the 6MT is still a great car, especially after you shift to second gear.

I think the biggest negative is that they did almost nothing to it other than brush off the dust from being used in the Coupe and dump it on the G70 unlike the i30N and VTN where a new 6MT was developed.

This is exactly right. The 6MT isn't great (like my S2000), but it is good enough that you can easily drive quickly, or smoothly, and not even think about it. I've been driving manual transmissions my whole life and the one in the G70 is FINE. The clutch is light and easy to drive in traffic. The throws are a little long and a little notchy, but not enough to affect the overall driving experience or be used as a reason to not get the car.

Save the manuals!!!

Alright, sounds like the journalists have too high of an expectation for the transmission, and no one's unhappy with the manual!
