  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Alternatives to G70?

Performance wise, yes; but, I'm talking price..

M3 and ATS-V are in a higher category BOTH price AND performance. A loaded ATS 3.6 RWD is around 46k. You might want to check it out.

I never said I was interested in the M3. You brought that one up in your initial reply. Also, like I said, a no-options ATS-V msrp's for $62k, and I would consider it if a dealer offered me discounts (and because it can be had with a manual, something the non V doesn't offer, and is a deal breaker for me when it comes to domestic brands) bringing it down to my assumed loaded price of the G70.

When I said, "the above mentioned cars", I was referring the cars that I mentioned in my previous post, not yours.

Yeah I got that. The reason I mentioned the M3 is because it is in the ATS-V category. Read again how I brought it up.

That's great. Not interested in it though.

Drove the new Mustang. It's incredibly fast and holds the road like it's on rails. Performance is really other-worldly.
The 10-speed automatic felt crisp and shifts were fadst and deciseiv in Track mode under throttle. More delay was evident in the less aggressive driving modes, but nothing problematic. It's really a very capable package with a strong performance heritage and balance.

But it's definitely more rock & roll than I'd prefer. The exhaust sounds great but is really, really loud for day-to-day driving. The car I drove didn't have the nicest interior options. It was fine but I didn't feel swathed in luxury (not that I consider that a necessity).

I wouldn't completely take this off the table. There are factory icentives and deals can be had. But if you're not primarily looking for performance, it'll likely be too aggressive for most drivers. If Genesis lives up to most of what we've seen and if pricing is competitive, I think it would take priority on my wish list.

But for those seeking ultimate performance, bot acceleration and handling, the 2018 Mustang is definitely worth a look.

I hate mustangs with a passion and I will never own one; but, I have no problem admitting that they are incredible machines with some awesome peformance tech - all with a really good value. It's very hard to beat, in terms of performance per dollar.

Speaking of which, I didn't know that they made significant changes to the 5.0 Coyote engine for 2018... That thing is impressive. Take a look at Engineering Explained below, where he gives a really good summary of the engine changes.

This coupled with (finally) fully independent rear suspension, Ford made a really strong - enthusiast centered - high performance car in virtually every way. Well done.

The 2018 Mustang comes with a Magneride suspension option now too.

Chevy SS. Worse in all aspects besides one: driving experience. That, itself, is enough for me to buy one and comes with a 6 speed manual. I was considering one along with the Stinger but couldn't pass up the deal on mine Gen II. Also, probably one of the only cars one the road today that will appreciate in value as you drive it. If you've never heard of it, Google is your best friend. Take a look !

You have an appropriate username since you're wanting to start "beef." I'm glad you read articles of the Chevy SS which means you paid attention to it. Almost all journalist used poor man's M5, you must be journalist or a sheep; same thing. $50k is not poor. It just means this unicorn of a car will never die.

Tread lightly, Beefer...

Not a journalist...LOL. And I don't think I am a sheep (perhaps in wolf's clothing). I'm just a car guy...and I remember it very clearly. Great car. When I heard the news that they were shutting down the plant, etc...I went on a mad hunt for it. Found a few locally, etc. But at the end of the day...I wanted AWD.

And when I say poor man's M5...$50k is not cheap of course. But an M5 (E39 I believe) was $70k+ :) So...relatively speaking !! It had everything the M5 had to offer.

Not sure why you said I am trying to start a beef :( Am I missing something?

I don't get what the issue is with Beefer's comment... If you take offense to the "poor man's M5", remember that poor is relative. We are all driving "poor man" versions of higher end cars even though we may not be poor. It is just a saying, nothing to get worked up over.

I speced out an A4, C Class and a 3 Series to the similarly equipped 3.3 Sport on their respective Canadian websites. Going by memory...the A4 was around $72k, the C Class was around $73k and the 3 Series was around $74k. The 3.3 Sport I ordered was around $58k.

It seems as if the ATS-V is following a somewhat similar path, although it's unlikely it will appreciate in value over time like the SS will. Even so, I've been seeing a number of them (ATS-V's) relatively close by on Auto trader with significant discounts, priced at about 54k USD, which is exactly where the top trim G70 is gonna be I bet. It's very tempting, as not only does it have more power, but legend has it there are even a few with manual transmissions. ;)

Even so, I still like the looks of the G70 quite a bit more, and the AWD is a big bonus, thus I'm still leaning towards the G70.

Such hard decisions, life is rough. /sarcasm.

Here in canada an ATS-V is almost $80000

Nothing wrong with what Beefer said. The tread lightly part was a giveaway that meant I wasn't serious. We all compare something about ourselves to something. I think it's inevitable. They compared the E39 M5 to the SS which did not have the $110k+ sticker today's M5 has. WIth the countless articles regarding the SS, they compared it to the E39 for the driving experience. They both were sedans and have standard transmissions. I think the E39 was around $65-70k range (correct me if I'm wrong) so yeah, it's a bit more expensive.

I guess it's the stigma that some people have regarding cars. For example, a Porsche 718 is a poor man's 911. It seems a bit snobby when the "poor man's" joke comes out. BMW is way more luxury-oriented than the SS, hence the price. The Stinger relates more to the SS than the M5 hold the manual and "feeling" behind the wheel.

Definitely not getting worked up, it's good for discussions which I enjoy (y)

Man, I feel you on that. The ATS-Vs are such a bargain. I'm not one for turbocharged motors but I was considering a CTS VSport as well (twin turbo). The ATS-V's are more track focused than the G70 so make sure and drive them both. I would imagine the G70 is a bit more season-friendly than the ATS. The manual transmissions are a big selling point as I would have one for a sports car. Imagine if they sold the ATS as a Chevy, the discounts would be other-worldly lol

ATS-V is $20000 more than a G70 brand new but with a discount on older model year its closer to a $10000 difference. If someone is looking for a RWD rocket ship i would suggest a discounted ATS-V
I chose the G70 as it was the best AWD car under $60000 cad in my opinion but if i lived in the US where there is less snow in some states i may have gotten an ATSV on discount
