  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

My dealer originally tried the factory "fix", some orderable repair kit. We thought it fixed it, but the popping became louder when the temperature outside was higher. I do hope it fix everyone else's issue and you don't have to go through what I did.

Trust me my friend, so do I. I'm hoping that maybe the fix has evolved somehow and doesn't just consist of sticking some felt in places. I'm slightly encouraged by the fact that he actually mentioned the adhesive softening in the heat when describing it.

Tdefrees,

Glad to hear you got your car back together. Did the dealership pinpoint what was causing the noise?

Great timing! Good news and a sigh of relief..but not what many want to hear. The replacing of my headliner has seemed to resolve my issue. I have more testing to do on warmer days next week, and only a couple spots need cleaning. I had a great talk with the shop supervisor and advise that I was a picky person because I kept my car clean on a weekly basis. This is the ivory interior with ivory carpet. A monumental task to remove most of the interior in my opinion.

Today - I received the call was done and I thanked the shop. I decided to pick-up the car over valet because I wanted to look it over with all the work that was done. The new headliner was perfect, nice job to my shop at Genesis of Louisville, Oxmoor. But, there were a few areas of shop floor smudge on the carpets, seats, and rear window suede. The shop supervisor Steve was gracious and cleaned all the spots I pointed out. I could tell they did not cover the floor carpet while they worked inside the car, a bit disappointing there. The carpet under the seats is very dirty, something I'll clean at a later date. It's out of view right now, but my mind knows it's there.

I had spoken with the shop supervisor regarding the repair, and it was very costly to them as the headliner replacement process from the factory was not as designed by their repair guide from Genesis. The suede headliner is very stiff and cannot be creased. The took out all the interior pieces as the guide showed then, but the headliner would not fit through the opening and they had to damage the old one to get it out. So here it is........they had to have a glass guy come in to remove the front windshield in order to insert the new headliner.....

He informed me the Genesis reimburses their warranty work, but only at the hourly rates prescribed in the manuals of repair. They were several hours and a glass repair over that. Time they may not get reimbursed.

For the great news - The noise is gone and I have my 3.3t power back! My dealership did a great job with the repair in my opinion for being their first major newer model Genesis and will use my repair for future knowledge. Yay for being a training tool. Being a first year model for the US, I understand there can be small issues that need repair and corrections for future models. This in reality was a small issue....but required a major repair. I still love my G70 and would buy another.

I hope my experience and story help others a hope some of you mechanical geniuses find a way to fix the issue without a headliner replacement. I'll keep updating as the weeks pass to ensure the repair has resolved the issue. Happy motoring all!View attachment 22927View attachment 22928View attachment 22929View attachment 22930View attachment 22931
Yaaaa!! Glad it worked out for you. Sounds like the dealer did a pretty good job and had to really do a lot of work to pull it off. Let's hope it passes the hot weather test. So what was the key to the actual fix? It seems like if they re-did what the factory did, the design flaw that caused the noise would still be there.

Great news, and what a beautiful interior.

They weren't 100% sure if it was the glue running along the headliner or the plastic tabs on the clear plastic block. I just hope it's fixed.

Honestly, I really think that an entire headliner replacement shouldn't be necessary to deal with such a small noise.
Agreed. Seems the dealer could drop the headliner onto the tops of the seats, add some soft material anywhere the adhesive is showing on the roof and potentially rubbing the headliner and reinstall same headliner. Unless replacement headliners have padding or something different on them, putting the exact same headliner back in place without addressing the real root cause would do nothing.

It does seem that it should be that simple...

So the question is: Did they really need to remove the seats to get the headliner in/out or could they just fold the seats down?

Even with the seats and other interior pieces out, they could get the old headliner out, but only after creasing it. With the suede, it damaged it and they didn't want to risk damaging the $1800 replacement one. There has to be alternatives to fix this issue, just I didn't want to try with the car under warranty. It was easier to make this decision since I am leasing. If issues pop up due to poor repair and another headliner pop, I'll just return it at lease end.

So, might be the sunroof after all and not the headliner.

I still think its the adhesive, especially seeing those great globs of it under the headliner in td's pics.

Wonder if the dealer added that adhesive on the replacement headliner..

I would imagine so. From some reading I did I think that's how the wiring for various things is secured to the headliner.
