Any of you have a headliner/sunroof noise issue?

Update: after having my sunroof assembly replaced last week, it seemed to solve the rattling issue. Until today, that is, because the rattle is now back. Not nearly as bad as before as it’s just now starting, but definitely there. I called Genesis Customer Care and made a case number, and will be taking the car back to the dealership on Monday. This is my third Hyundai-built product with a sunroof (first was a 2012 Sonata, then 2016 Genesis 3.8) and every single one has had an issue with sunroof rattles. Needless to say, this is extremely frustrating.

Wow, sorry to hear that. They obviously have some sort of design flaw, or poor/inconsistent quality control. You'd think they'd have it worked out by now.

If I have this issue I will start with this as it is cheap, easy, accessible and reversible.

The Stinger iX worked on my G70. I applied it to only one side of the roof, with 1/16" felt tape applied to the problem area. I also liberally applied white lithium grease in other places (away from any rubber), just in case.

Keep us posted! I've noticed mine getting worse but definitely not as bad as others judging by some of the videos I've seen.

I only heard it when the headliner is open. It went away for whatever reason but it might be because it only ever heard it in the summer heat

Mine has just started the rattle at 3700 miles, though muffled by sunshade. I have located the offending article matching the post by Kamauxx in the stinger thread and mrcleean herein. I have the sticky felt mrcleean used so I will attack it when appropriate. I find I use the sunroof less than I imagined. My previous vehicle was a hardtop convertible and I used it top down when I could but the sunroof seems to be different somehow. Cannot say why I am uninclined to open the shade and/or the window. I have the ivory interior which gives lightness feeling inside which may give a sense of light that the dark interior does not provide.

I hardly ever even open up the shade. Gotta keep that new car smell! But now I can't keep it open for long because something in my head singles out the small rattle over whatever is playing through my speakers

Dealer called me yesterday and said they had ordered 2 new roofs, but both delivered were defective. Ordering a 3rd so still waiting to see if that solves the problem. I just wonder how do you send out a defective sunroof, but it can't be defective if it went through quality contol inspections and then get to the dealer and they deam it immediately defective. Will post results whenever that day happens.

Still waiting on replacement smoked trim...but I know that is for a different thread.

Would be interesting to get the dealer to be specific on what was defective? Could have been shipping damage as well. Genesis probably does not make our sunroofs. The lowest cost sub-tier supplier will make it. Could even have more than one supplier making them?

That's my vote. Damaged during shipping. Those roofs are big and delicate.

Man, I'm the same way. I had convertibles for a long time and I love convertibles, but since then I've had a few cars with sunroofs and I basically never use them. Honestly, I wish I could just option to delete them. It would be quieter and there would be fewer things to rattle.

Not exactly sure what they did. They told me that they Genesis told them to “adjust something” and that did it I guess.

After reading every post from this entire thread, I think I have found somewhat of a solution to my headliner noise. I say somewhat only because I dont particularly like the fix, however it has been very effective. I had the more water bottle crinkle / tacky glue separating sound. It was present in basically any condition, glass open/closed/cracked, shade open/closed, etc. I bought the car about 3 weeks ago and have done about 1,100 miles with temps between 35F-60F during this time. I started noticing the headliner noise at around 700-800 miles.

Solution:

I used 1/2" thick 1" wide high density foam to wedge between the headliner and the metal roof. The stuff I had laying around didnt have any adhesive on it which actually made it easier to move around. Unfortunately the foam is white and it can be seen relatively easily when looking down into the car with sunroof open. I plan on this only being temporary until Genesis / Hyundai get there stuff together on this particular issue.

Getting to the actual issue.... I dont think my actual issue has to do with RTV or sealant becoming tacky and sticking/ un-sticking. I think the issue is in the blocks that have Velcro on them. I think its either cheap Velcro that doesnt bond together well and makes noise, or maybe the block itself rubbing against the Velcro. I can hear the noise the most around these Velcro blocks when pressing on the headliner. There are two of these blocks that run down the sunroof opening on the passenger side. You can see one of them in Tdefrees' post (pic below). After I made sure that there was plenty of foam wedged around these two Velcro blocks, all of the noise went away. In the last pic (rear section) the last piece of foam I used does have adhesive on one side. I was afraid it could possibly come loose and fall back into the big void between the headliner and roof and maybe get in the way of the shade from closing.

Some of you are probably going to hate this "solution", and I definitely dont love it, but its effective.

Thanks. Nothing had to be taken down or removed. I was able to slide the foam strips through the gaps between the headliner and the roof. There’s quite a lot of space between there...more than I was expecting. Also, as you can probably see in the pictures, I was sitting on the center console / arm rest to get the proper position to do this. I laid a towel on it just to not mess up the leather in anyway.

Excellent post, Kirk, and good sleuthing. I had a similar problem in my old G37, where the velcro holding up the headliner wasn't sticking as it should have. I ended up stuffing an old t-shirt up there to simply keep it from making partial contact and continually sticking and unsticking.

That said, I'm still a bit skeptical that this is a velcro problem. I have the same noise, though it only rears its ugly head when it's warmer out. Upon pulling down the side of the headliner and sticking my hand in there, I could feel the adhesive become gooey and melty in the headliner. I pulled out some globs of it with my fingernail even. You can see the (possibly) offending goo in the crease in the headliner in tdfrees picture.

I believe I might have actually alleviated the problem by... stuffing an old t-shirt up there, but I won't know until it actually gets warm enough to provoke the noise. Regardless, if we can fix the problem by the means you suggested, I don't care whether it's sticky adhesive, velcro, or little roof gremlins up there causing it. I hardly ever open the sunroof anyway so the aesthetics wouldn't bother me.

From reading your older posts I know you’re convinced it’s the sealant causing your noise. Hopefully your tshirt up there does the job once it warms up. It’s just ridiculous how many different issues we are all having with these sunroofs. I too rarely use mine and wish we could option it out. Either way I still love the car.
