If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello, I wanted to get an opinion on what is the best engine oil for v6 genesis sedan 2012 based on the experience you guyz have? The owner's manual recommends quaker state. I am not a big fan of quaker state. Amongst Mobil 1 and Castrol which one is better?

The "recommendation" of Quaker State is more or less a paid advertisement as part of a worldwide agreement that Hyundai has with Shell Oil (who owns Quaker State and Pennzoil). It is extremely unlikely that the Genesis (since it is built in Korea) comes factory fill with Quaker State, which is only marketed in the US (I believe). The factory fill is probably a Shell branded product.

Mobil 1 5W-30 or 0W-30 is your best bet, and is nicely priced at Walmart if you buy the 5-quart jugs.

If you use some other 0W-30, make sure it is NOT a European Formula oil.

I know that the 2015 Genesis owners manual now recommends 5W-30, instead of 5W-20, for the 3.8 V6, so I would not use a 20 weight oil.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was looking into trying Castrol Edge with Liquid Titanium 5W-30. Have you tried this one?

Castrol has always been a "cult" oil in my opinion - marketed more by trademark recognition & hype rather than basic quality - but maybe it's also a great oil.

I have personally used Mobil 1 since its inception in 1975 - along with the viscosity specified on the filler cap. Never a problem.

I have used Valvoline synpower for many years. 5w30. My other choices would be Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum.

I have also used Pennzoil Platinum when I couldn't get Mobil 1.
WallyWorld sells both in 5 qt. jugs.

That is a good motor oil. I actually use Mobil 1 Extended Protection, which is probably a tiny bit better, but it is hard to tell the difference as they are both very good synthetic motor oils.

A lot of people don't realize that Castrol is now owned by BP.

Castrol is famous for producing the first Group III hydrocracked mineral oil and to call it synthetic in their marketing (instead of using only Group IV PAO and Group V Esters). Now, most synthetics sold in the USA are Group III, although Mobil 1 has a blend of Groups III, IV, and V. Not sure about Castrol Edge with Titanium.

Pennzoil Platinum has a relatively new formulation that now comes in two different motor oils. Both are Group III made from natural gas using a process pioneered by Shell:
  • Pennzoil Platinum with PurePlus Technology
  • Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with PurePlus Technology

Not sure about Castrol Edge with Titanium.

Sounds like Shell gasoline with nitrogen - precisely what I meant by marketing hype and product marketing thru good trademarks.

Wow! 9 replies without an Amsoil dealer (the Amway of oil) jumping on an oil related question. On the BMW forums it seems you get their replies before you hit send. If you want to go totally OCD go to www.bobistheoilguy.com. Guys there argue about oil blends and cut open their used filters to see what's inside. Personally I use Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum or Castrol Edge interchangeably. I change between 6-7.5k and have the oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs every 3 changes. The lab always says the oil could go another 2-3k miles. I don't use the Hyundai filter, it's probably fine but looks cheap. So I use Fram and Purolator and they are half the price of the OEM.

bobistheoilguy is a cesspool or rumor, mythology, old wives tales, and out-dated information from the 20th century.

My last oil change was last week from dealer as $79.00 for a Synthetic change I think is a little steep. My Nissan Armada I went with Royal Purple as I drove 500 miles a week for work. Not sure if that would be something to use in my v6 Sedan as which I had no problems with in the Armada. Next change will be on me screw that!!

Yes I 2nd the puralator filters. No issues.

Converted on my last few vehicles to Walmart Supertech Full Synthetic Base with FRAM Ultra XG filters.

This is a super helpful resource with results that show that Amsoil filters are barely superior to XG line from FRAM which cost 1/2 as much.
http://www.gmtruckcentral.com/articles/oilfilterstudy.html

Supertech oil is less than 18 bucks for 5 quarts of full synthetic. When it comes to full synthetic oil brand vs brand, the advantages of any over the other are so marginal that it makes very little difference, and the cheaper price of Supertech means I can follow the standard maintenance schedule and ignore any preconceptions or promises that synthetic oil is good for twice the miles or more.

Changing my own oil with these materials costs less than $25.

The Walmart Supertech oil is a reasonable choice (and definitely better than conventional oil), however, comparing one brand of oil filter to another is not possible across the entire line of the filters they offer. That is because Fram (or any other manufacturer on the planet) does not actually manufacturer all of the filters it sells, so the spin-on filters may not be the same construction as the cartridge type filters that the Genesis uses.

I wouldn't put Fram *anything* in any of my vehicles.

Amsoil is about the only oil I know of that has a written warranty backed up by insurance, I use it in many vehicles - never any problems in them , even 200,000 mile vehicles that we changed to sample performance/leaking/etc - no problems but the DRIVERS, they would still go to wallyworld & get the pan drain plug stripped quite often (happens @ quick lubes also) good lubricants, not readily available in many places.

Most of the major oil companies have a written warranty for their lubricants, including consequential damage to the engine if caused by the oil. They don't need to have it insured by a separate company, since they are bigger than any insurance company (unlike Amsoil).

Which Amsoil do you use? They have three different lines of synthetic:
  • Signature
  • XL
  • OEM

Right - an oil warranty, printed right on the can - try to collect. The bunny comes on Sunday.

Maybe I'll write a letter to Bill Gates next time my computer has a glitch.

I agree that it would be virtually impossible to collect, since if you change your oil on a regular basis as required by the warranty then then the oil would not be at fault if something went wrong with the engine. But my point is that the same is true for Amsoil.
