  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi:
I'm new to this forum having recently purchased a 2015 Genesis 3.8.
Scrolling through the forum I see various ways to convert the standard DRL's to led DRL's either by modifying the existing DRL set-up or by modifying the headlight accent lights.
There are so many different way to do things out there that I honestly don't know which way is best, well proven and relatively easy to do as a DYI job.
After seven years there must be some good thoughts out there from members of this forum.
Could some of you out there please help me out and give me some insights on and links to which methods you personally think are best?
Thanks for any and all help!!

I'd be interested too. Also on whether it's possible to convert non-HID headlights to the HID kind. Don't need them to be auto-leveling and all that, but HID would be nice.

I'm not too sure which setting is my DRL I like to think I have two sets the first one being a 2in1 because it's a running light and your L/R turn signals attached to the auto headlight settings and the second setting is the led light strip/brow that is the only light in the housing that comes on and personal preference is the cleaner looking one of the two and would have been cool if Hyundai set it up so that the led strip was wired into the auto settings, but that can be easily rewired. Unltimately id like to just swap the wires and turn that led light brow into a sequential switchback. In the mean time a cheap, brighter, and aesthetically pleasing fix is to swap your halogen 1157's with led 1157's switchbacks. Meaning they will be an led bulb with two colors. One amber color for your turn signal and then they will switch back to daylight white or blue, red, green, purple, rainbow idk I'm sure there are other colored combo switchbacks sure to satisfy. Anyways it's worth taking a looksy.

Replying to my own post here: Never mind the HID conversion question; turns out I actually have HIDs. But I am wondering whether there's an LED bulb that can just be swapped in to replace the OEM turn signal bulb (which I guess is also the DRL bulb, which is why it burns out relatively quickly) and provide all the functionality of the original bulb...just with an LED. Advanced (or even intermediate) wiring tricks are not for me; if there's a simple plug-and-play option I'd really like to know about it. Thanks...

plaintiger, hello. I am also quite interested in lighting issues. I would like to change all possible exterior bulbs to LED's. Any further information/help you could pass on would be greatly appreciated, thank you and regards.

Hey there, Ed. As it happens I do now have some information (and the answer to my own question). I replaced the incandescent DRL/directional bulbs with Sylvania 2357A LEDs (the 'A' signifies that they're amber; they are also available in white, red, and possibly other colors as well, but in the end I opted to just stick with the original amber).

Because the LEDs use so much less power than incandescents, the car thinks the bulb is out and causes it to flash very quickly (commonly referred to as hyperflash). The fix for this is to wire in resistors that absorb and dissipate the excess energy the electrical system is trying to send to the bulbs; you can find these online or at your local auto parts store.

Something to be aware of is that the bodies of these resistors get very hot – upwards of 200°F – and even the little mounting tabs sticking off the body of the resistors can melt through the plastic housing behind your headlights, so what I did was to get some heat-resistant double-sided tape and stick the resistors to the plastic housing that way so they wouldn't flop around and possibly melt through wires, cause shorts, etc.

I don't have time to write more at the moment but if you need any further details, please feel free to ask and I'll respond when I can. 🙏🏻

Plaintiger, hello. Thank you for taking the time, and for sharing further information. I will certainly look into this remedy. Thanks again for the help, and have a good day. Regards.

These bulbs are LED and are plug and play:

Have you tried those bulbs and found them to work as advertised? Because I bought a pair of bulbs on Amazon that said they were switchback and plug-and-play (and had a lot of positive reviews), and neither the switchback function nor the plug-and-play (i.e., no hyperflash) function worked in my 2015 DH. And I don't know whether it was a defect in the design or whether it was because the bulbs were damaged in shipping, having been placed loose in a hard plastic box and allowed to bang around against each other in transit, but the one bulb I installed of the two flickered continuously in DRL mode. Fwiw...

Yep, I have them on my 2015DH and have worked flawlessly for the last 5 months :)

If you really want to make the accent lights stick out - read up on this thread: (#easy) You want a LED DRL on your US Genesis? Read on.

Note - I included a link that takes you to my post which shows side-by-side comparison. You will need to scroll to the beginning of the thread to get the nitty gritty details.

Yep Srobak, I've done that mod when I had my bumper off a few weeks back, much much better :)

That's fantastic. I wish I'd seen your post before I went through the trouble of installing those resistors; clearly the bulbs you linked to are much higher quality than the ones I bought. Heck, maybe I'll buy them anyway for the switchback functionality...

I'd love to do that – the front parking lights are awfully feeble in their stock configuration – but I'm getting old and short of patience with such projects. Maybe I'll see if I can find somebody to do it for me.

But then, I also love the convenience of being able to just leave my light switch in auto mode almost all the time, except in a couple of rare scenarios.

Eh...I'll probably just leave mine as they are after all. It's a cool mod though, and if those LED light strips were the DRLs and were still as dim as they are I'd definitely do it.
