  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just bought 2009 Genesis 4.6L last Friday, 20th July. Love the options and drives great:) I opted for this one after going over many reviews/discussion on various topics and doing some self-study, comparative research & after test driving Infinity G35X, M35, Acura and Maxima of 2011. Initially I had the feeling that the steering wheel vibrates a bit more than usual while stopping at signal light with shift at D. Vibration is lesser at P, but it is still there. This vibration is not there at all in 2012 5.0L. Technician at the dealership is saying it is not out of ordinary and 5.0L has a totally different engine design. So it is not doing the same. My question - is this typical of 2009 models for only 4.6L or for all models of that year? If it was like that then, is it fixed in the later models? And most important, how bad is this for the vehicle? Will it get worse by the time and might create serious issues while try to resale? Will greatly appreciate some comments on this. I have till Wednesday, day after tomorrow to return this car, if it is clear that this is a big problem. Any helpful suggestion will be so much appreciated!

I would take the car back.

I also have this problem on the highway which is not even. Too much vibration on the steering wheel, should I bring it to the dealer and have it fixed?

While idling at a stop light, transmission in Drive, my 2009 V8 has a little steering wheel vibration if the A/C is running. With the A/C off the vibration is barely perceptible. I can also feel slight vibration in some of the "hard points" underneath the dash; the whole car seems to be quivering slightly when the A/C loads the engine down at idle. It's no worse, and a lot better, than other auto transmission cars I've driven.

Once moving though there is no vibration at all in the steering wheel - A/C on or off.

No such problems with my 2009 V6. I guess that Wards forgot to do long term testing before they gave out those awards.

I have no vibration in my 2009 4.6 even with the AC on. Mine is smooth as a babies butt.

However, my car wants to pull right and the alignment and tire pressure is spot on. That sucks lol

My '10 4.6 does this. It did not do it when I bought it 8 months ago, but now it does.
Took it to the dealership yesterday for service and to have this looked at, and they said they checked the motor mounts and engine codes, and couldn't find anything wrong, and are basically blaming the vibration on the low idle of the 4.6 engine. I wish there was some sort of fix for this, the shaking sucks when I'm stopped in traffic

Does the shaking stop when you put it in Neutral?

First off - in response to Walnut, the vibration in my case is not while I am driving in Hwy - Genesis drives great! Problem, as stated by mikec, when I am at a stop sign or waiting in the driveway till my garage door opens.
Didn't try in N though. And yes, I noticed in more than one cases where the vibration is occuring, the idle speed was low (needle in the middle (at 500 level), as opposed to needle at 1000 in the ones that didn't vibrate). One of friends also told me that low idling speed might cause the vibration.
Update - I spoke with my Sales rep this morning and stated that I am thinking of returning it, since tomorrow is my last day to excercise that option of 5-day return policy. I told him that I am willing to buy it back if they can fix the issue and bring down the vibration to a exceptable level. He proposed to try to help by getting some senior Managers involved (like GM etc.) and wanted me to give him time to do that. I agreed, provide I still have the option to return if not fixed. He proposed to extend my return period till they try it out. I wanted to have something in writing. He is willing to do that. I am going to see him this late afternoon.
BTW, test driven another Genesis 4.6 of 2011 with around 16570 miles this morning before coming to work. No noticeable vibration (almost imperceptable).
My one (2009) has 30010 mile on it now.
Will keep you guys posted.

Return it within the agreed 5 day window. Let them sort it out and buy the car back if you want. They'll do everything they can to keep you in the car at all costs.

Thanks to both of you! I am going to do exactly that... either get extension in writing from the Sales Manager or return and wait till they fix it. I made 50% down, but the Bank Manager told me, she will pull back the money in case of any trouble with the car.

Buy a 2010 if your looking for a used Genesis.

Yeah, and I don't mean they'll do all they can in a good way. They want that deal closed and in the books as revenue. They're almost there. That salesman wants his commision and believe it or not...I've known salesmen to lie.

I have the same problem in my 2009 4.6. It's very annoying while stopped waiting for a light or in stop and go traffic. I'm selling the car for this reason and the fact that the service departments are unable to fix these cars properly. Most '09 4.6s don't have the steering wheel vibration problem, but once again the mechanics can't fix it. I would recommend you stay away from this car as the they are a nightmare to get repaired when problems arise. I've never been able to get anything repaired correctly on the first try except a dome light and 2 items including the steering wheel vibration are considered 'characterisitics of the car', which is service department speak for we can't find the cause. The Hyundai service departments do not have the proper training needed to service these cars properly.

If the only way to fix the problem is to replace (or completely rebuild) the engine, then in one sense they may be correct that it is characteristic of the engine after a certain number of miles (or perhaps depending how many times it has suffered the notorious misfire problem when cold, causing irreversible damage).

My car is silky smooth. I even sat a glass of water on the engine to show a friend how smooth it is and the water hardly had a ripple in it. so a vibration is not normal. That said, a vibration at highway spped is most likely a tire balance problem.

Glass of water is no problem. Would you be willing to have a circumcision performed on you in the back seat while your car is being driven over a bumpy road? Your friend can sit in the front seat and watch.
