In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. It was announced today that the NHTSA has opened an investigation into the problem of ABS Module malfunction on the Genesis causing complete brake failure. See other threads on this subject.

Please note that the brake fluid recall is a separate (but possibly related) issue than the ABS module failures.

Hyundai never admitted that they were related, but it is too much of a coincidence that today they switched the brake fluid replace TSB from "perform switch to DOT-4 if car already in shop for some other reason" to now a mandatory recall.

However, from what I have seen, people who have had a brake failure did not get their brakes fixed permanently until the ABS module was swapped out (DOT-4 upgrade did not fix it if brakes already had symptoms of intermittent failure).

I can't access HMAService right now, but what MY does this impact (both the ABS failure and brake fluid).

Brake Fluid recall is for build date April 1, 2008, through March 16, 2012. Check the build date in the driver's door jamb.

The NHTSA investigation is not limited to any specific build date at this time.

I wonder if this is related to the temperature of DOT 3 versus DOT 4. In literature,

Dry boiling point Wet boiling point Viscosity limit Primary constituent
DOT 2 190 °C (374 °F) 140 °C (284 °F) ? Castor oil/alcohol
DOT 3 205 °C (401 °F) 140 °C (284 °F) 1500 mm2/s Glycol Ether
DOT 4 230 °C (446 °F) 155 °C (311 °F) 1800 mm2/s Glycol Ether/Borate Ester
DOT 5 260 °C (500 °F) 180 °C (356 °F) 900 mm2/s Silicone
DOT 5.1 260 °C (500 °F) 180 °C (356 °F) 900 mm2/s Glycol Ether/Borate Ester

I can see where our cars could potentially cause DOT 3 to boil because of the weight. From what I have read on the threads, failure was due to a hard braking.

Once brake fluid begins to boil, there will be air bubbles in the system. Maybe because of the bubbles generated after hard braking, it some how affects the ABS module.

I plan on taking my car into the dealer for the brake fluid change.

I agree with you Mark, once the problem occurs, it seems like changing to DOT 4 does not help.

my 2012 Rspec was made after the deadline. I asked dealer and they said no recall or tech bulletin applied for the break fluid in my car. no action was taken.

this was around 6 months ago.

ppp

5/22/2012 manufacture date. Looks like I'm good.

I'm not so sure about that. And I am wondering that if the service that was done last week on my Genesis satisfies the recall? They said they replaced the brake fluid in response to the TSB.

So, is there anything else that needs to be done for the recall announced yesterday????

I would think they should be inspecting all cars, whether or not they have had the brake fluid changed or not, for deterioration of components in the system. I am going to the dealer Tuesday for my winter tire swap and will ask them then.

Thanks, keep us posted.

Going down to Naples this winter?.......We leave right after Xmas. It's cold enough now that I'm ready to go!

Nothing planned right now, although I believe about January 15, my wife will beg to go to Sanibel/Captiva for a week. We've been looking around Deep Creek in Punta Gorda and Rotonda West to buy something sometime next year, but too many trips scheduled already for 2014. I'm hating the cold already.

I think there is a misunderstanding about what I said. There is only one recall at the moment, which is for the brake fluid upgrade to DOT-4. Previously, the TSB only applied to cars already in the shop for some other reason, but now HMA will notify all owners to have the brake fluid swapped out for DOT-4 if not already done.

But it is not clear yet whether that fixes the ABS module problem, especially if the car has some miles/years on it and some corrosion within the ABS module has already occurred. This will hopefully be looked at by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, who could theoretically issue an additional recall to have the ABS modules replaced, either because it has corrosion or because its design is faulty. That is why I said they are separate (but related issues).

Based on reports of owners who took their cars in to the dealer when they first encountered an intermittent brake failure, and "usually" the dealers refused to replace the ABS modules unless the problem could be replicated by the dealer, I wonder if they have the capacity to actually figure out whether the ABS module has already deteriorated. If they do, one would wonder why they didn't do that before, instead of sending owners back on the road just because dealer could not reproduce the problem.

Is there anyone else out there like me who has one of these Genesis' built within the dates mentioned that does not have any problems?

I think my build date was April 2009 and I've had no brake problems. I've got 90K+ miles on her. This doesn't mean my ABS module is OK though...

I have one of the early 2009s, V8 Tech packages. Still have the original ABS module and no problems so far. But only a third as many miles on my car as you've accumulated on your car. I did get the DOT4 fluid change about 2 months ago during an oil change.

p.s. long rant about single-channel ABS design deleted... One part can fail leading to total loss of brake function? Should not happen; brake hydraulics are dual-channel so any hose break or other common failure only wipes out brakes on 2 of the 4 wheels.

Still have my 2009 4.6 V8 (Tech Package) with about 52,000 and just finding out about this recall, never had any issues with my brakes and believe me the way i drive i would have known but im calling the dealer tomorrow for sure

I have a 2009 with build date of Oct 2008, but only 44K miles and live in warm weather, and park in attached garage. I have not had the brake problem occur. Brake fluid changed to DOT-4 about two months ago.
