Buying Used Genesis V6: 2010 or 2011? What Options are a Must?

Been reading this forum for about a week now and it has been great with a wealth of information! The Genesis would be by far the most technologically advanced vehicle I will have ever owned. The closest I have ever had is a 2000 Maxima. I currently have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner. It has 100k miles now and has been solid as a rock. The Truck still has a tape deck. Probably one of the reasons I have had so few problems is because it has so little technology. I hope a Genesis is 90 % as solid as this truck. I would be thrilled with that! Also, I have read all the threads about the just ok ride of the genesis. That should not be an issue for me because as you can imagine my truck doesn't ride that great.

I want the V6 because I need a MPG boost from my truck. I got 16mpg out of my last tank in the city. My drive to work is about 20 miles with a bunch of red lights.

So, here are my questions:

1. 2010 or 2011? Seems both can be had used with around 20k miles for 22k to 26k

2. Do these X rental Genesis's scare you? Seem to be great deals on them in the Dallas area right now. Warranty should take care of any problems right?

3. Nav or not? Seems from reading this forum, a lot of issues with factory Nav. I have a pretty nice Garmin, but does an aftermarket Nav look bad on Genesis dash.

4. Which Package is a must? The 14 speaker Lexicon seems like it is awesome. Is the standard stereo pretty good too if I can't find a genesis with Lexicon?

5. 17's or 18's? I am leaning toward 17's since I can find 18's used later.

6. What kind of gas mileage can I expect based on my city driving? Assuming I don't put my foot to the floor much.

7. Any other features or packages that you have that is a must or wish you would have gotten?

There are 3 trim levels for the V6. Below is a partial list of features for 2010/2011:

• Base - 17" wheels, 7-speaker stereo, steering column only adjusts up and down manually.
• Premium - 18" wheels, leather dash insert, 14-speaker Lexicon simulated surround sound, sunroof, motorized telescoping steering column. 2011 Premium has touch screen Nav (no Nav on 2010 Premium).
• Technology Package - 17 Speaker true discreet surround sound system and DVD (discrete surround sound requires DVD-A source material). Voice Response Nav, and a bunch of other goodies depending on model year.

Sounds like the ex-rentals are Base model? Those prices seems high for 2010 Base Model, so I would expect that you could get several grand off the asking price on any used car sold by a dealer.

Any used car scares me, which is why I would buy a new Accord before I bought a used Genesis.

Thanks for all the replies. I see everyone recommends the tech package, but I read about a lot of Navigation Issues? Much truth too it? How much is Hyundai charging for each Navigation update?

Also, can you guys tell a difference in the ride from 17's - 18's?

How is gas mileage real world in V6 vs V8?

My drive to work is similar to yours. I'm getting between 23 and 24 mpg with 18" wheels.

My suggestion is get the Premium package as a minimum. I have the 14 speaker Lexicon and it sounds great, but I regret not getting the 17 speaker for its ability to play DVD-A's.

I wish the Tech Package is touch screen, imo the Premium Touchscreen Nav system is better and more modern.

The leather is nicer on the Tech Package but it doesn't seems as durable.

I got a 2012 premium package 3.8, I didn't even want a nav, I think most of the portable navs are better. I did however want a the leather on the dash, radio, wheels and other nice interior and exterior changes.

I don't like most tech stuff in my cars, I do like my automatic mirrors tho.

Definitely get something with a Lexicon stereo and the leather dash/etc. I don't think this car is the same without it.

Plan on replacing tires if the Dumflops are on the car. Cost = about 1000.00
the 2011 4.6 tech gives you all options so imo thats the way to go for the best value.

Sounds Like a 2011 V6 with Premium package is what I would like to find. Touch Screen Navigation seems much better. I am sure I will be like others and want the 17 speaker Lex over 14 speaker, but not at the expense of the non touch screen navigation correct?

Prices seem kind of high right? Looks like finding a used 3.8 with premium or tech package is going to be tough.

Also, I noticed on the second listing that they are offering the 100k warranty on the used car. That is not possible right? It is a Hyundai dealer selling it also.

The asking price for a used car at a dealer is usually at least 15% more than average selling price. Check the used car buying websites to see wholesale and retail prices, and negotiate from there. The dealers acquired the cars at wholesale prices.

A Certified Pre-Owned can be sold by a dealer with 10 year - 100K drive-train warranty, and expect to pay more for such a car. Normally the extended drive-train warranty is for original owner only. Electronics (audio/video/Nav) only have a 3 year - 36K mile warranty.

There is Nothing wrong with the Nav in the Tech package. One benefit that I see is that my Nav screen does not have finger prints all over it. Plus, the sound quality of the 17 speaker Lexicon in night and day better than stock radio. You will not be disappointed in getting the Tech package.

I drove several Genesis's as I looked around. One felt loose and didn't track straight; I later found it was in an accident. Another just seemed comparatively loud. With any used car (rental or otherwise), make sure you check the car out. It is very reasonable to think that a rental might have had drivers who beat on the car. On the other hand, it will have had its basic oil changes and maintenance.

I'm not a big Nav fan and I have an aftermarket unit and an iphone that does a better job.

I'll admit that I'm not an audiophile, but I thought the base system was very good. Your're making a significant investment here, try both and see what you like/need.

I prefer 17's as this gives more choices for summer and winter tires. They give a slightly better ride at the expense of a small amount of steering precision. It also gives more sidewall rubber to prevent bent rims on bad roads. While its not a big problem with the 18's, I'm not a fan of the dub look.

Personally, I like an uncluttered dashboard that is intuitive to use. I refused to consider a BMW after I tried to use idrive. I wasn't a big fan of the Hyundai infotainment system (although it wasn't nearly as bad as BMW's). I don't miss the Nav and the base stereo was more than fine with me. I think that the woodgrain (fake?) dash looks better than the leather. But YMMV so don't take my word for it, try everything and make you own choices. Down the road, I will probably look into suspension changes to give more steering feel but that's where my interests lie.

You bring up some very good points. I got an old truck with no leather and 4 crappy factory speakers. I don't have a sunroof now. Also less stuff to break since I like to drive cars 100k miles. I'm sure the most basic Genesis will be a huge upgrade to me and will save me some cash!

New tech stuff is fairly reliable. I put 239,000 miles on a 2004 Acura with all options nav etc. Never had an electronic problem. So IMO the most bang for the buck is the 2011 tech pkg 4.6 V8. Better brakes(4 piston), Better headlights, Better trim, Smart Cruise control, better sound system. German made ZF transmission. Higher resale.

2010 doesn't have the electronic parking brake or the adaptive cruise control. I have the technology package and I really wish my nav was a touch screen. I could honestly careless about all those features but the sound system really is amazing. Just walk into the dealership and ask them to play a music for you. Dealer showed me the saving private ryan DVD to me and the surround sound was amazing. I could hear bunch of bullets coming from different places in the opening scene of that movie.

My advice is to get to a Hyundai dealership and try several different cars and options. That way you will get a better feeling for the base model and what you might want upgraded.

Many great Points and I will definitely spend some time looking at all versions and options. The Dallas Auto Show is in about a month so that is an easy no hassle way to go actually touch and feel every car available at least. Then my plan is to go to a dealer and drive some cars.

The 4.6 V8 is very tempting, but I was not even going to drive a V8 because my ultimate goal was to get a vehicle with a lot better city MPG than my truck, which is getting 16-17 MPG now. I know I can get 27 MPG in either, But can I get 24 MPG out of the V6? Will it be 20 MPG out of the V8? I am worried if I drive the V8 I will want it!

As much as the extras are cool in the 2011 V6 4.8, I have to ask myself are they worth $5k more to me?

See, this is what scares me. I get 16-17 in the city in my truck. I don't put my foot in it or anything either. I am not sure your driving style, but if you get 21 in the city in the V6. The tells me 18-19 in the City in the V8! Thats is not much of an increase for me personally. Anyone else want to chime in on what MPG they are getting in their V6 or V8?
