If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Buying Used Genesis V6: 2010 or 2011? What Options are a Must?

See, this is what scares me. I get 16-17 in the city in my truck. I don't put my foot in it or anything either. I am not sure your driving style, but if you get 21 in the city in the V6. The tells me 18-19 in the City in the V8! Thats is not much of an increase for me personally. Anyone else want to chime in on what MPG they are getting in their V6 or V8?

Thanks
Neither of these cars gets good gas mileage in the city. You can go by the EPA estimates. The highway mileage is very good because of the two overdrive gears on the transmission that come into play at higher speeds.

You should be able to get a brand new Genesis Base model (2012) for about $31K, so I think it is crazy to pay about $27K for a used car. If you can't afford $31K, I would buy a brand new Accord EX that gets good mileage in the city if that is where you drive the most and fuel economy is important to you.

I would not pay too much attention to the advice on this forum (except of course, for my advice), because I doubt that very many people who post here have the same values as you, or are in the same situation as you.

New tech stuff is fairly reliable. I put 239,000 miles on a 2004 Acura with all options nav etc. Never had an electronic problem.
Your Acura electronics may have held up well, but a lot of people on this forum have had warranty service on the Tech Package audio/video/GPS, and out of warranty it is a minimum of $3K to replace any of those items (they don't fix them, just replace).

Since the OP is buying a used car and asking about 10 year warranty if CPO, I assume he is keeping it well past the 3 year warranty on the audio/video/GPS.

I agree. I was thinking of finding a used 2011 base certified, so I can get the 100k warranty, at about $23k. This one is listed at a local Dealer for $26,500. Depends on how long they have had it if they would move to 23k or not. It has 21k miles so it is probably a rental. Not sure if that completely scares me if I get the 100k warranty.

I will still look at other cars and debate the MPG thing over and over. The Dallas Auto Show should help me immensely. Truthfully, anywhere near 30k and it gets tempting to start looking at some of the nicer hybrids to maximize MPG at the sacrifice of Performance and Luxury like in the Genesis.

All That being said a quality used Genesis, assuming a great deal. is at the top of my list today.

I am not sure how you determined the CPO car was a rental. I have no idea myself. I would not have thought that rental company would get rid of a car that soon (at one time they did, but not these days). Maybe it was a demo, but I would have no way to know about that either.

It still boggles my mind that you would get a used 2011 when a new 2012 is only about $4-5K more, especially since the 2012 gets better gas mileage (1 city, 2 highway, I believe). But maybe you can get that one at several $K below asking price.

Also remember that the 100K mile warranty is for drivetrain only. Rest of car has 5 yr - 50K miles warranty (except audio sytem which 3 years - 36K miles). Also, if after 75K miles you engine or transmission starts making weird noises or is not working as when it was new, but is still functioning, they might be likely to say "that's normal for a drivetrain with that many miles."

And you get a higher guaranteed trade-in value on the 2012 too...

You definitely make sense. I am just on a budget and really 25k is my max. I really would like to be closer to 20k. I saw a Genesis in a parking lot and just checked out used prices and it seems like there are quite a few 2011's with 15k - 25k miles in my area listed for 25k-26k. I have not bought a car in a few years and maybe thing have changed, but I would think if they are listed for 25k-26k, in this economy, I could pick one of these up for 22k - 23k. I could be completely wrong.

Seems like Best price for a brand new 2012 3.8 Basic is 30k - 31k. I see more of an $8,000 difference, that is a big chunk of change in my income bracket.

The only reason I thought that these cars could be rentals are the amount of them available used in my area and the amount of miles on them for a car that is just a year old. Any idea when the 2011's were released? Maybe if the 2011's were released in September of 2010, 25k miles for a 2011 is not too many.

If you could get one $2-3K less than dealer asking price, that would be reasonable. MPG on 2011 is not as good as 2012, but at least you get Aisin (Lexus) transmission. I don't think it would be unheard of to get that much off dealer asking price.

I don't recall exact date of 2011 release, but it may have been Sept 2010. Maybe the dealer will tell you the name of previous owner. Is that kind of stuff indicated on CarFax report?

I assume that you like the Aisin Transmission better than the 2012 transmission? If so, out of curiosity, why? That kind of stuff is on the Carfax. I will. Definitely ask.

I have not driven a 2012, so can't really comment on the new Hyundai 8-speed transmission. It is probably very smooth (although some have complained about hesitation on standing start if you accelerate too fast), but I don't care that much about smoothness (within reason). I care more about reliability, and the Aisin transmission is a proven 6-speed design.

When I was first looking at the Genesis in Jan 2009, I was a bit leery of the Hyundai brand, and the Aisin transmission was an important factor in my decision making to purchase. Now that Hyundai has shown it has improved reliability, perhaps I am not that concerned anymore, and there is the 10-year warranty on drivetrain (but I don't completely trust warranties, since there is often a gray area as to whether something is degraded or not working at all, and also my time is valuable and don't want to spend it trying to get stuff fixed, even if it is under warranty).

The German made 6 speed ZF transmission in the V8 through 2011 is also very very reliable.
The ZF transmission is in a number of upscale cars and is supposed to be very good. I have driven several V6's and V8's and I can say that the V6 (Aisin) seems to downshift smoother and more controllably than the V8 (ZF). With the V6, I could control the downshift easily through throttle position. With the V8, often you didn't need the downshift because of the extra torque. Still, if you really put the throttle down, there was a fairly long pause followed by what seemed to be a 2 gear drop. On the basis of feel and controllability, I preferred the Aisin.
